Tritone substitution explained on the piano: one two-note shell voicing plays two dominant seventh chords. Keep F♯ and C in your right hand, move only the bass from D to A♭, and D7 becomes A♭7 — the jazz chord substitution behind countless ii–V–I progressions. In this lesson you start with a ii–V–I in C and hear what happens when D♭7 takes the place of G7. Then you build the shell voicing on D7 — the root and 5th in the left hand, the 3rd and ♭7 in the right — and see why those two notes are a tritone apart, whichever way round you play them. That is the whole trick: keep the same shell, change the bass, and the 3rd and ♭7 simply swap jobs. You practise it with a Charleston rhythm (then displaced), learn why it works for dominant 7th chords, and walk through all six shapes that cover the twelve dominants — with a tip for bass players on using the tritone as an ornament. To finish, you play the ii–V–I in G with A♭7 in place of D7. 🎹 Practise the tritone sub free in the Jazz Harmony Lab: https://jazz.nathanielschool.com/#tritone-sub 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ▶ Related lessons • Shell Voicings on Piano: Why C7 and F#7 Are the Same Two Keys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxnZBXL-1PA • Jazz Piano Chords: The Voicing Exercise That Teaches Every 7th Chord and Its Tritone Sub: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHLV3iA-56s • Reharmonize Hallelujah on Piano: Secondary Dominants & Tritone Subs (Part 3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLWdZDcQugs • Beyond V–I: 8 Piano Cadences That Change How Music Ends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Zdkdxd_HY • Free practice apps: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 🎓 https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 - What is tritone substitution? How to play piano fills between chords — octave licks over modern pop voicings, in one two-bar exercise you can take to any key. Three rich chords in the right hand — Dmaj9, F♯m7(11) and E(add4) in A major — octaves in the left, and two beats at the end of the loop for a fill in octaves. You'll learn four octave licks, a triplet fill and a semiquaver fill, B minor as a filler chord, a second F♯ minor shape, and a voicing template that moves the whole exercise to A♭ major and any other key. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 🎛️ FREE PRACTICE TOOLS — no signup Runway — build fills, licks and runs over a chord ➡️ https://runway.nathanielschool.com Metronome with swing, triplets and semiquavers ➡️ https://metronome.nathanielschool.com ▶️ Related Lessons 🎹 Stop Playing 1-5-8 In Your Left Hand (Pop Piano) ➡️ https://youtu.be/XWGhJMxhcE4 🎹 5 Fancy Piano Chord Hacks to Transform a Simple Triad ➡️ https://youtu.be/qTkiqeE2jw0 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 🆓 Free tutorials website — every lesson sorted by topic and level ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance: modern pop voicings with octave fills 01:14 Welcome: a full workout — voicings, octaves, time feels 03:05 The chords in A major: D, F♯m, E 04:10 Left hand: the root and the octave 04:43 The E chord is a placeholder for the filler 05:23 Swap in B minor: a ii–V to E 05:40 Right hand: Dmaj9 voicing (5 7 9 3) 06:04 F♯m7(11): A B E A under one thumb 07:04 E(add4): A B E G♯ 08:31 Bm7 as a filler chord on beat 3 09:15 Ghost notes and swing in the left hand 10:13 The simple three-note version 11:22 Octave fills: Lick 1 (A B A E → F♯) 12:18 Lick 2 and Lick 3, with the pedal 13:30 Recovery: land back on beat 1 14:08 The new lick 14:23 Dotted notes, triplets and semiquavers 15:45 Lick 4: A B C♯ G♯ → F♯ 15:57 Put it all together 16:27 Recap and the alternate F♯m shape 17:31 Play the whole etude again 18:29 Voicing templates: key numbers vs chord numbers 20:14 Transpose to A♭ major 21:07 A♭ improvisation with octave fills 21:43 Practice it in all 12 keys 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac · the school ➡️ https://instagram.com/nathanielschool 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Lessons ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoFills

Learn how to play blues piano with just two notes in your right hand — shell voicings, the Charleston rhythm and both blues scales over a 12-bar blues in E, with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music. 🎹 A dominant seventh chord has four notes, and you only need two of them. Keep the third and the flat seventh — the two notes that make it a dominant — and throw the root and the fifth away. Your left hand covers the root anyway, and as Jason puts it, the fifth "isn't adding that much unique harmonic flavour" in the right hand, so give it to the left and it widens the whole thing out. That pair is a shell voicing, and it is what blues and jazz pianists have always actually played. We start on C7 — E and B flat — and then take it to E for the rest of the lesson. E7 is D and G sharp. A7 is C sharp and G. B7 is D sharp and A. Every one of those is a tritone, and here is the part nobody tells you: a tritone is its own inversion. Turn a perfect fourth upside down and you get a fifth; turn a major third upside down and you get a minor sixth; turn a tritone upside down and you get another tritone. That is why 3–♭7 and ♭7–3 are the same shape, and why your hand barely moves all the way round a blues. Then the rhythm. The Charleston is two hits, swung, and there is a displaced version that starts late and lands on the three. Combine them — Jason's own preference is the displaced one first, then the normal one, which is everywhere in rock and roll. Left hand keeps a steady root and fifth underneath. And the gap the Charleston leaves is not empty space: it is where your solo goes. For the solo, two scales, and both are simpler than they sound. The major blues is just the major pentatonic with a flat third added. The minor blues is the minor pentatonic with the blue note. Then three licks: E B D E, the longer B D B B flat A G that fits over B7, A7 and E7 without changing a note, and the A–B flat–B turnaround — the four, the tritone and the five — that sends you round again. Finish with what Jason calls "some masala": slide the whole tritone voicing down chromatically. Do that from B7 and you land on E7, then A7 — because the three chords of an E blues sit on three touching pairs of keys. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ▶️ RELATED LESSONS One Left Hand Pattern. The third and the seventh are all you need. In this jazz piano tutorial we build the shell voicing for a dominant 7th chord, discover that those two notes are a tritone — so the same two keys give you TWO chords — and take the whole thing round the circle of fifths with the Charleston rhythm. Most of us learn chords the regular way — all four notes, every inversion. Here we do the opposite. A shell is a smaller set of notes: you keep the ones that matter and leave the rest out. For a dominant 7th that is the 3rd and the flat 7th. The bass player has the root, and the fifth does nothing. C7 is C E G Bb. Drop the C and the G and you are left with E and Bb — and those two notes are a tritone, the one interval that turns into itself when you flip it. So the same two keys are also the 3rd and the flat 7th of F#7. Twelve dominant 7th chords collapse into six tritone pairs, and we practise them as pairs, counter-clockwise round the circle of fifths, with the two shells 3–b7 and b7–3 sliding down chromatically while the left hand takes the roots. Then the groove. Once the shell is in your hand the tensions are one step away — b9, 9, #9, even a #5 — and you can play licks over it (you will hear where I stole one from). We put the Charleston rhythm on the shell, then the displaced Charleston, then both at once, and finish with a hand-independence ladder: the left hand holds the Charleston while the right climbs from semibreves to minims to crotchets to the 2 and the 4 — plus the cascade, and the snaps and claps that take your hands off the keys and teach you to come back in. Get your keyboard out and play along. Every exercise transfers to any key. 🎹 LEARN WITH US Live online lessons, Bangalore centres and the Everything For Life bundle: https://nathanielschool.com Piano, guitar or vocals, any level — message us on WhatsApp and our course advisor will get back to you: https://wa.me/917760456847 ▶️ WATCH NEXT 🎹 Jazz Piano Chords: The Voicing Exercise That Teaches Every 7th Chord and Its Tritone Sub — https://youtu.be/sHLV3iA-56s 🎹 10 Piano Exercises on ONE Chord (E7) — Dominant Seventh Chords Explained — https://youtu.be/22fTJTAE9WI 🎶 The Subdivision Exercise That Makes One Chord Groove — https://youtu.be/v2wMT78ZAlg 🗂️ Chord Voicing & Inversions — https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 📚 Making Chord Practice FUN with Circle of Fifths — https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-D6G1jDe18TFflopjjnxRG 🎶 Hand Independence — https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 🛠 FREE PRACTICE TOOLS The Jazz Harmony Lab — dominant cycles, ii–V–I and altered voicings, free in the browser: https://jazz.nathanielschool.com Master Key — the diminished seventh laboratory, for dominant 7ths and tritone substitution: https://masterkey.nathanielschool.com Groove Metronome — for the Charleston and the displaced Charleston: https://metronome.nathanielschool.com 25+ free browser tools for rhythm, chords, inversions, notation and ear training: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) sorted by level, topic and genre: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 The regular way: four notes, four inversions 01:14 What a shell is 02:04 The dominant 7th: 1, 3, 5, flat 7 03:20 Why shells: pick and choose 04:41 Building the C7 shell 05:40 The 3rd and the flat 7th are a tritone 06:46 The first drill: semibreves over minims 07:15 Two shells: 3–b7 and b7–3 08:13 One shell, two chords: C7 = F#7 09:15 The six tritone pairs 10:40 Round the circle of fifths, counter-clockwise 12:58 Improvising on the shell 13:21 One step away: b9, 9, #9 and #5 15:04 Licks on the shell 16:01 The Charleston rhythm 16:54 The other Charleston: displaced 17:15 Both Charlestons together 18:27 The ladder: left hand holds, right hand climbs 19:33 The goal: right hand on the 2 and the 4 20:58 The cascade 22:15 Snap on the 2 and the 4 23:27 Clap at the four, then recover 24:46 In a nutshell 25:21 The app, the notes and the study guide 25:55 Thanks for watching 💛 SUPPORT THESE FREE LESSONS PayPal: https://paypal.me/jasonzac?locale.x=en_GB&country.x=IN UPI: jasonzac-1@okhdfcbank (Jason Zac) 📩 TALK TO US WhatsApp: https://wa.me/917760456847 Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac · https://instagram.com/nathanielschool #ShellVoicings #TritoneSubstitution #JazzPiano

Shell voicings are the two notes that actually describe a chord — the 3rd and the 7th — and in this jazz piano tutorial we run them through one long 2-5-1 chord progression until every 7th chord type and its tritone substitute is under your hands. The right hand plays two notes and nothing else. The left hand takes the root and the fifth. That split is how most working pianists actually voice a 7th chord, and it leaves your right hand free to improvise. The progression is deliberately long: Am7, D7, Gmaj7, Cmaj7, F#m7b5, B7, Em7, E7 — a major 2-5-1 running straight into the relative minor's 2-5-1, then a secondary dominant to send you round again. Every chord falls a fifth, so one finger stays put and the other steps down a semitone or a tone. Play it twice and you will have played both arrangements of all eight chords — the complete shell vocabulary of the key — because the hand keeps descending into the other shape by itself. Then we add the things that make it music: singing the roots, the chord names and the shells; five rhythms including the Charleston and its displaced cousin; and tritone substitution, where the same right-hand shape serves two different dominants because the 7th of one is the 3rd of the other. 📘 STUDY GUIDE + PRACTICE APP The Companion has the whole exercise notated, the crown-note table, the five rhythm grids and a practice log for all twelve keys. Part 4 of our E7 piano workout series! Explore pyramid sets with accent groupings and the challenging 'crunch' exercise in contrary motion. 🎹 🎹 Take one chord and build ten gym-style piano workouts around it. In this practical lesson we use a single E7 (dominant seventh) chord and turn it into a full technique session that transfers to any chord you like. First we break down the E7 shape — root, major third, fifth and flat seventh — with sensible fingering for both hands and all four positions: root, first, second and third inversion. Then we run the ten drills: the inversion ladder, the siren, piano jumping jacks, the horn throw, the dead hang, the speed bag, the rope climb, the pyramid set, the crunch and a cool-down stretch. Along the way you'll practise arpeggios against block chords, alternating two-note patterns, tritone swaps between the third and flat seventh, finger-by-finger lifts, speed work with a bouncing wrist, hand-crossing and accent groupings in twos, threes, fives and sevens. This is for pianists who can build chords but want them to feel musical and coordinated. Get your piano out, start slow and try every workout on other chords around the circle of fifths — then tell us your favourite gesture for the horn throw in the comments. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Improvise over ONE chord - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9oizLJPiwwH_gvSH-IFu_V 📚 Making Chord Practice FUN with Circle of Fifths - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-D6G1jDe18TFflopjjnxRG 🗂️ Chord Voicing & Inversions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 📋 Arpeggios - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 🎶 Hand Independence - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoChords #ChordInversions #PianoPractice

Learn how to read music the way working musicians actually do: sight reading, rhythm reading, chord charts, transcription and sight singing, with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music, and why sight singing is the one I'd pick. I started my journey without really knowing how to read. I sang in a choir and figured it out along the way, then played in a cappella groups and rock bands where, for almost a decade, hardly anyone in the band was reading notation. So reading is an option, not a requirement, and it is not the same thing as music theory or ear training. But once you do read, there are five very different things you can do with the page, and most courses only ever teach you one of them. Sight reading is eyes to fingers: you read the page and play it, almost like reading a poem. The honest limit is that you can become a very good reader and still not know what the accidentals mean, where the music modulates, or what tension and resolution are about, because your ears sit the whole thing out. Rhythm reading takes pitch away and has you clap, count or say what is printed; read the son clave once and it is in your body for life. Chord charts are read, interpret, improvise: a Cm7♭5 is an invitation to a ii–V–I or a Locrian line, a C7♭5 points you at Lydian dominant, and the symbol itself should inspire you. Transcription runs the whole process in reverse, from sound to page, and it teaches you things no classroom, course or YouTube video can. And then the one I'd pick: sight singing. Read the notation and sing what you read. You don't have to be a trained singer; what you are training is your mind, your ears, your interval recognition and your compositional ability, and I think the only way to train your ear is to sing. We built a free app for exactly this, with the old Melodia exercises plus my own more rhythmic ones, standard sight singing patterns, a Jazz Lab where you sight sing chord charts, and a score for pitch and timing so you can keep improving. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 🎼 RELATED LESSONS ON THIS CHANNEL How to Read Chord Charts Like a Pro Musician ➡️ https://youtu.be/4qHUtgJ7XoE Learn to Read Sheet Music Fast: Intervals, Clefs & Key Signatures ➡️ https://youtu.be/r5E_FVtw_3A 🎓 Nathaniel School of Music ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons and our live classrooms (Music Factory is our transcription classroom) ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 🎤 The free sight singing app from the lesson ➡️ https://sightsinging.nathanielschool.com 🎷 Jazz Lab, the free chord-chart trainer from 24:13 ➡️ https://jazz.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 - What Does Reading Music Actually Mean? 🎼 00:29 - Clefs: Treble, Bass, Alto & Tenor 00:42 - The X and Y Axis of Notation 01:26 - Two Hands, Two Staves — and the Pipe Organ 02:21 - Why I Started Without Reading 02:38 - Playing in Bands That Never Read Music 03:18 - Reading Is Optional, Not Theory 03:40 - Memorise and Visualise Instead 04:53 - What Sheet Music Is Really For 05:24 - Learning by Watching (Western Grandad) 06:35 - Learning by Intuition (Carnatic Grandad) 🎻 07:20 - Parroting: Learning Songs by Ear 07:40 - The Limits of Copying from YouTube 08:25 - Method 1: Read & Play (Sight-Reading) 🎹 09:06 - Even Drummers Sight-Read 🥁 09:35 - Transposing Instruments: Concert Pitch 10:20 - The Honest Limit of Sight-Reading 11:20 - Method 2: Rhythm Reading 11:40 - Note Durations & Tuplets Explained 12:02 - Clap It, Tap It, Vocalise It 12:22 - The Son Clave Stays With You 12:52 - Method 3: Reading Chord Charts 13:40 - Cm7b5 → Locrian or a 2-5-1 14:07 - Minor Major 7th → Melodic Minor 14:19 - C7b5 → Lydian Dominant 14:33 - A Chord Symbol Is a Scale 14:48 - Maj7 → Lydian, Pentatonic, Harmonic Major 15:33 - Charts in the Studio, Theatre & Jazz 16:28 - Why Chord Charts Aren’t Taught 16:45 - Method 4: Transcription 16:59 - Reverse-Engineering a Song by Ear 17:35 - Steps vs Leaps: Somewhere Over the Rainbow 🌈 18:13 - Shape, Intervals, Notes, Then Notate 20:04 - Beyond Staff: Solfège & Carnatic Swaras 20:46 - Guitar Frets & Instrument-Specific Notation 21:24 - Respecting Every Culture’s Notation 🌍 21:51 - Method 5: Sight-Singing 🎤 22:23 - Why Singing Trains Your Ear Best 22:53 - Practising Intervals from a Root 24:13 - Sight-Singing Chord Charts (Jazz Lab) 💛 Support these free lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp ➡️ +91 7760456847 📩 music@nathanielschool.com #SightSinging #SightReading #ReadingMusic

Learn how to read and build rhythm notation on piano beat by beat, dividing beats by two, three and four using a simple play-or-rest system with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music. 🥁 TRY THE APP FREE — Rhythm Arithmetic, the web app demoed in this lesson (tap a cell to notate it instantly, loop it, change the meter, roll the dice): https://binary-arithmetic.nathanielschool.com 🎛️ All 25+ free practice tools ➡️ https://apps.nathanielschool.com Rhythm gets a lot simpler when you reduce it to one choice: play or don't play, note or rest. In this lesson we build rhythms beat by beat — almost like binary arithmetic, zeros and ones — and show the Western notation equivalent for every pattern. We start at the top level: sound or silence in each slot of a bar. From there you'll see how note values get their shapes — the oval becomes a minim, shade it for a crotchet (quarter note), add a tail for a quaver — and how rests get their own symbols. The whole system runs on beat division: divide the beat by two, three or four. You'll work through simple one-beat cells, two-beat patterns with dotted notes, trivial and "groovy" triplets, swing feel, and sixteen sixteenth-note options. We also demo our web app, Rhythm Arithmetic — tap a cell to notate instantly, loop it, choose meters from 4/4 to 3/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8 and 5/8, merge phrases (ABBA, ABAC), and try famous patterns like son clave, rumba clave, Charleston and habanera. There's a rhythm dictation mode too, to test your ears. Great for pianists, keyboardists, producers and any musician who wants to read and count rhythm with confidence. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 All Things Rhythm - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT8AILe58QHSRI7c3I6LKcWI 📚 Sixteenth Note Practice - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9xy8UYvtLyUcpSCEILXrPH 🗂️ Piano Rhythm Patterns: Salsa, Reggae, Waltz - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_tHExU4pBEaMxDbTP6k5Kf 📋 Ear Training - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-GHvpugWvYgEuLAL4f01ZK 🎶 Combo Piano Practice - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-O_9vTKozS6I2HNBfdVOcG ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Introduction: Build Any Rhythm 🥁 00:27 - Play or Don’t Play — Note or Rest 00:38 - Notes vs Rests: Symbols Explained 🎼 01:00 - How Note Values Get Their Shapes 01:40 - To Play or Not to Play 01:55 - Beat Division System Explained 02:29 - Introducing Rhythm Arithmetic (Web App) 📱 04:40 - See It, Hear It, Become It 05:02 - Tap a Cell, It Notates Instantly 05:15 - Loop, Sing and Shape the Rhythm 05:29 - Rest View vs Hold View 05:46 - Percussion Voices: Cajon, Conga, Clave 06:03 - Rhythm Dictation Mode 🎯 06:32 - Start Simple: One Bar Grid 07:00 - Four Options on One Beat 07:20 - Two Beats & Dotted Notes 07:27 - Triplets: Trivial vs Groovy 07:33 - Swing Triplet Feel 07:44 - Quarter Note Triplets 07:51 - Sixteen Sixteenth-Note Options 08:08 - Build a Merged Phrase (ABBA / ABAC) 09:23 - Customising Individual Beats 09:44 - Adding a Rest on Beat Three 10:06 - Mixing Divide-by-Three & Four 10:25 - Zeros and Ones for Non-Readers 10:36 - Drag & Edit the Notation 10:58 - Rolling the Dice: Full Random Rhythm 11:42 - Adjusting the Crotchet Pulse 11:48 - Changing Time Signatures Live 12:09 - Building Your Own 5/8 Composition 12:38 - Famous Clave Patterns 🥁 13:34 - Melodic Mode Preview 🎹 14:11 - Future Features & Mobile App 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #RhythmReading #RhythmNotation #MusicTheory

One chord. One finger. That's the whole exercise. The left hand plays a single arpeggio — Low, High, Middle, High on E, B, G# and B — and never changes. It's the engine. Then the right hand does nothing but land single notes in the gaps: the "e" and the "a" of "1 e & a". That's it. No chord changes, no new shapes. The groove comes from WHERE you put the note, not how many you play. In this short version: the engine, targeting the e's, targeting the a's, walking the E major scale on those hit points, adding diatonic thirds underneath, then switching the whole thing into triplets and swing. Full lesson here: https://youtu.be/v2wMT78ZAlg — it goes much deeper, including the chord colours (E major 7 → E7 → E6) and all eight diatonic thirds in E major. 🎹 LEARN WITH US Music Method Live, our Bangalore centres and the self-paced Everything For Life bundle: https://nathanielschool.com 🛠 FREE PRACTICE TOOLS 25+ free browser tools for chords, inversions, rhythm, notation and ear training: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 📘 STUDY GUIDE 💛 SUPPORT THESE FREE LESSONS PayPal: https://paypal.me/jasonzac?locale.x=en_GB&country.x=IN UPI: jasonzac-1@okhdfcbank (Jason Zac) 📩 TALK TO US WhatsApp: https://wa.me/917760456847 Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac · https://instagram.com/nathanielschool #PianoLessons #LearnPiano #MusicTheory #HandIndependence #PianoPractice

Piano hand independence and rhythm, taught with one chord: keep a steady left-hand arpeggio going while your right hand plays the subdivisions in between. This is the coordination exercise I come back to constantly. 🎛️ All our free practice tools — chords, inversions, rhythm, notation and ear training, no signup: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 🥁 Keep the “1 e & a” grid honest while you drill this — our free Groove Metronome does subdivisions, swing and triplets: https://metronome.nathanielschool.com We spend the whole lesson on ONE chord — E major — and never change it. The left hand plays a single arpeggio shape, Low–High–Middle–High (E, B, G#, B), rolling in steady quavers. That hand never changes. It is the engine, and it does the same job a fingerstyle guitarist's thumb or a banjo roll does. Then we look at what happens in the gaps. Count semiquavers as "1 e & a" and your left hand is already covering the 1 and the &. So the question the whole lesson asks is: what do you play on the "e" and the "a"? The answer, for a long stretch, is one single note with your thumb. One finger is genuinely all you need — and it turns a static chord into a groove. From there we colour the chord (major 7th, flat 7, major 6th), change the time field into triplets (tha-ki-ta, three against two), drop the middle subdivision to get swing, and finally add diatonic thirds in the left hand so the harmony floats while a melody sits on the hit points. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Folk Arpeggios - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-cGUjDuor0KK4XtYSQWRMP 📚 Improvise over ONE chord - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9oizLJPiwwH_gvSH-IFu_V 🗂️ Arpeggios - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 📋 Hand Independence - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 🎶 All Things Rhythm - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT8AILe58QHSRI7c3I6LKcWI ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Intro Performance 🎹 00:32 - What Are Subdivisions? 00:44 - The Goal: Groove in One Hand, Steady in the Other 01:00 - Setting Up the E Major Chord 02:23 - Left Hand Arpeggio: Low-High-Middle-High 03:06 - Meet the Semiquavers 🎵 03:23 - What to Do at the E’s and As 03:33 - Targeting the E’s with a Single E 03:51 - Hands Flowing as One 04:11 - Targeting the A’s with a Single E 04:26 - Humming a Melody Over the Pattern 04:52 - Why It Sounds Groovier 05:03 - One Finger Is All You Need 05:39 - Combining E’s and Ands 05:47 - Coloring the Chord: Major 7th,b7 and Major 6th 06:07 - Accessing Different Time Fields 06:20 - Introducing Triplets 🎶 06:55 - Changing the Time Field with Swing 07:10 - How Swing Drops the Middle Subdivision 07:40 - First Exercise: E Major Scale on Hit Points 08:15 - Pivoting the Third and Fifth 08:34 - Back to Semiquavers: Picking the ‘A’s 08:56 - Adding Diatonic Thirds in the Left Hand 09:23 - All the Diatonic Thirds in E Major 09:41 - Floating Thirds Freely 10:24 - Thirds Plus Melody on the A Points 10:43 - Into the Triplet World Again 11:14 - Recap: The Practice Methodology 11:29 - Related Folk & Floating-Thirds Lessons 11:56 - Study Guide & Practice Apps 12:18 - Learn With Us at NSM 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #Arpeggios #PianoRhythm #handindependence

Part 2 triad workout: practise F major & harmonic minor triads with off-beats, swing, tresillo, clave & time signatures on piano. 🎹🎶 Welcome to Part 2 of our triad workout! In Part 1 we formed the triads of the F major and F harmonic minor scales along with their first and second inversions, ascending and descending. Now we take those same shapes and make them musical by focusing entirely on rhythm. We start by revising one chord every two counts, then explore rhythmic anticipation — playing chords on the off-beats instead of the predictable 1, 2, 3, 4. You'll learn to displace chords to the "and" of beats, shift the chord itself on off-beats, and combine block chords with arpeggios and broken chords for variety. From there we move into quaver (eighth note) scale drills, add a swing feel, and tackle popular rhythm patterns like the tresillo, the clave and the 3-3-2 grouping. We also gamify the exercise across time signatures, starting at 8 beats per chord and shrinking down to 7, 6, 5, 4 and 3 — pushing you to change chords faster while staying in the groove. Your left hand gets a workout too: single octaves, perfect fifths (with the diminished fifth on the leading tone), broken chords, and cascading two-hand patterns. We even show how to borrow a song's rhythm to keep your practice fun and creative. Underneath all the groove, you're really drilling root position, first inversion, second inversion and even spread voicings. If you found this piano tutorial useful, do watch Part 1 and our related music lessons linked in the description. Learn to practise piano thirds in G major and G harmonic minor with unique ascending and descending rhythm patterns for both hands. In this piano lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through a comprehensive exercise on thirds using two essential scales — G major and G harmonic minor. This is a scale-practice drill with a twist: unique rhythm patterns built into every ascent and descent. You'll learn how thirds are formed by writing scales in a circle and skipping notes, plus how the augmented second interval in the harmonic minor creates that signature three-step leap. We break down both closed thirds and spread thirds, giving intermediate pianists a real technical workout. The rhythm patterns include 16th notes, dotted notes, tied notes, and rests — organised in a 4/4 pulse. You'll practise descending thirds with one rhythm figure and ascending thirds with another, starting from different scale degrees each time. This retrains your brain to think of scales beyond just root-to-root, which is essential for improvisation and sight reading. We also cover three different left-hand approaches: holding the pulse on the starting note, mirroring the right hand with carbon-copy thirds, or playing linear scale notes underneath the thirds in the right hand. For advanced players, Jason introduces spread third voicings that produce beautiful triad harmonisations across both hands. Practise minimum three scales a week, count out loud, move your body with the pulse, and enjoy building real technical fluency at the piano. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Major Esque vs Minor Esque — 8 Scales Explained (Part 1) - https://youtu.be/bmy_bXpE900 🎯 Major-Esque Scales You NEED To Know (Part 2) - https://youtu.be/9aKo3JsXkMo 🔑 Minor-Esque Scales Decoded: Exotic to Traditional (Part 3) - https://youtu.be/_DbME-fKHiI 💡 Understand Any Scale Instantly: Major-esque & Minor-esque Framework (full lesson) - https://youtu.be/M88ABjQn0Lo 📂 Scales & Modes - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:28 - Introduction 🎹 00:54 - Ascending & Descending Thirds 01:24 - Why Practise Thirds? 01:39 - What You’ll Learn in This Lesson 02:21 - The Two Scales: G Major & G Harmonic Minor 02:38 - Understanding Harmonic Minor 🎼 02:53 - The Augmented 2nd Interval Explained 03:21 - How to Form Thirds: The Circle Method 04:21 - Piano Shapes 04:41 - Part 1: The Descending Rhythm Pattern 🥁 05:17 - Descending from different points 06:32 - Counting 16th Notes: 1 e and a 07:23 - Applying the Rhythm to G Major Thirds 07:59 - Left Hand Option 1: Hold the Pulse 09:22 - Left Hand Option 2: Carbon Copy Both Hands 10:16 - Left Hand Option 3: Linear Scale Descent 11:01 - All 3 LH Patterns 11:27 - Descending Thirds in G Harmonic Minor 13:04 - Both Hands Carbon Copy Practice 14:05 - The Ascending Rhythm Pattern 🎵 15:09 - G Major Thirds Ascending 16:01 - Ascending from Every Scale Degree 16:58 - G Harmonic Minor Ascending Thirds 17:12 - Retraining Your Scale Knowledge 🧠 18:05 - Fingering Tips for Thirds 18:20 - Intro to Spread Thirds (Advanced) 🎼 18:50 - Harmonising with Spread & Closed Thirds Together 19:36 - Jumbling the Order for Creative Practice 20:01 - Homework: Three Scales a Week 20:20 - Recap & Final Thoughts 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoThirds #RhythmDrill #PianoTechnique

Learn 5 left hand piano patterns across 5 keys using one harmonic concept — explore rock, blues, and folk grooves with Jason Zac. Ever wondered how one simple harmonic idea can sound like five completely different genres? In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through five left hand piano patterns across five different keys — each one shifting the entire vibe of your music. We start with a power chord foundation and build outward using 6ths, 7ths, major and minor intervals. Because the third is left undefined, these voicings work in both major and minor contexts — giving you incredible harmonic flexibility for improvisation. You'll explore patterns in E, G#, Ab, F#, B, and A — moving through rock, blues, folk, and even experimental time signatures like 5/8 and 7/8. Each key gets its own rhythmic pattern with carefully placed accents and gaps that change the entire feel of your playing. A highlight of this lesson is Jason's tip on right hand improvisation: sing your melody first, then play it. This unlocks new rhythmic and melodic ideas that your fingers alone might never discover. We also touch on blues scales, Dorian mode, Mixolydian flavour, and how to mix the third for fresh harmonic colour. Learn to play triplets on piano with this melodic exercise — eighth note, quarter note & sextuplet triplets explained with fingering & licks. Triplets are the heartbeat of so much music — especially in Indian, sub-continental, and Eastern traditions — yet they're one of the most under-taught rhythms in Western piano curriculum. In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through a complete triplet exercise built around a beautiful B minor melody. You'll learn the four key types of triplets: eighth note triplets (the standard), sextuplets (divide by six), quarter note triplets (the hemiola), and half note triplets. Jason demonstrates how to transition smoothly between semiquaver (divide-by-four) feel and triplet (divide-by-three) feel — a skill that instantly elevates your rhythmic vocabulary. The melodic exercise itself moves through B minor, D major over F#, and A major (with an added 4th), incorporating harmonized thirds, dominant chord licks, and tasteful Indian-style grace notes. You'll get detailed piano fingering for tricky passages across black notes, plus a simplified beginner version if the ornamental playing feels too advanced right now. This lesson is especially valuable if you're an Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepali, or other Eastern musician — or anyone who wants to internalise triplets beyond just counting "one-and-a, two-and-a." Learn quintal voicings on piano — a colourful left hand technique using stacked perfect fifths to replace boring 1-5 octave drones. Tired of your left hand sounding muddy, thin, or stuck on a boring 1-5 octave drone? In this piano lesson, Jason Zac breaks down the quintal voicing — a beautiful left hand technique built from two stacked perfect fifths that adds instant colour to any chord. We focus on two specific voicings: F#add9 and Ebm9. You'll learn why these voicings sound rich in the lower register of the piano, how to play them as block chords or broken arpeggios, and three different rhythmic patterns to apply them — including 4/4 and 3/4 time feels, plus a syncopated pattern that leaves space for the snare drum. Once the left hand is solid, we shift to building a right hand melody using chord tones (3-2-3-5-3-2-1). This is a powerful compositional approach because every note is guaranteed to fit the harmony. Jason then shows you how to ornament the tune with grace notes and reverse grace notes, and how to develop independence between the hands by practising in fragments. The lesson wraps up with a complimenting counter melody and an AABA / AABB structure you can use to extend your ideas into a full piece. We also touch on improvisation, time signature variations (5/8, 7/8), and how the F# pentatonic scale lets you improvise on the black keys alone. Perfect for intermediate pianists working on accompaniment, film scoring, or contemporary piano composition. Learn 2 essential broken-chord piano patterns over a G major chord progression, with left-hand variations, swing feel and accompaniment tips. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down two foundational broken-chord patterns that instantly upgrade your accompaniment, worked over a beautiful G major progression (G - C - Em - D - C/G - G) using smooth second-inversion voicings around middle C. The two core patterns, Out-Two-In-One and Out-In-Out-In, cover steady pumping feels and faster swing tempos, plus volume control, accenting, triplet variations and an extra top note for richer textures. Learn the pendulum piano exercise: use just 3 notes to practise rhythmic groupings of 3, 4, 5 and 7 in B major. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down the Pendulum Exercise, a simple but powerful concept that develops your rhythm, dynamics, finger independence and musical creativity all at once. You'll work in B major using just B, C# and D#, moving them in a pendulum-like pattern (1-2-3-2-1). The real learning happens when you change how you group these notes in sets of 3, 4, 5 and even 7 while keeping the same tempo and pulse, training your ear to feel rhythmic accents beyond standard time signatures. You'll also learn a 1-5-6-4 chord progression for the left hand (B - G#m - E - B/F# - F#) with quintal voicings, add2 shapes and smooth inversions, so the melody and harmony stay endlessly musical. This lesson is perfect for intermediate pianists, singers practising Carnatic or Hindustani swaras, and guitarists who want better rhythmic phrasing. It also introduces the free Pendulum App for practising keys, patterns and groupings with a built-in metronome. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:54 - What Is the Pendulum Concept? 02:14 - Choosing Your 3 Notes 02:43 - The Importance of Rhythm in This Lesson 03:20 - Groupings & Accents Explained 03:41 - What is a Musical Accent? 05:24 - For Singers: Carnatic & Hindustani Swaras 06:15 - Setting Up the B Major Scale (5 Sharps) 06:35 - Choosing Your Note Set: Triads, Quartal & Sus Voicings 07:00 - The 1-5-6-4 Chord Progression in B 07:33 - Left Hand Voicings: Power Chords & Fifths 08:20 - E Major as Sus2 and Add2 08:38 - B/F# Inversion & F# Voicing 09:28 - Right Hand: Quaver Groupings of 4 10:03 - Applying the Pattern Over the Progression 11:26 - Strengthening Pinky & Ring Fingers 11:45 - Staying Human in the Age of Robots 12:01 - Staying Human in the Age of Robots 12:39 - Minimum 2-Note Accents & Semiquaver Divisions 🎵 14:14 - Odd Groupings: Entering the World of 3 14:46 - Triplets vs True Pendulum Phrasing 15:46 - Recycling the Cycle: 12 Notes to Reset 16:41 - Same Pulse, Different Groupings ✨ 17:41 - Syncing Left Hand to the New Accents 18:09 - Groupings of 5: Where It Gets Tricky 19:54 - Groupings of 7: The Ultimate Challenge 20:34 - Creating Musical Illusions with One Pattern 21:08 - Triplets Trap: Avoiding Predictable Patterns 22:35 - Reimagining Songs in Pendulum Phrasing 23:00 - 3-3-2 Tresillo Groupings 23:13 - Taking It to Triads Over the Progression 23:38 - Andalusian Cadence in Groupings of 3 24:25 - Practising Away from the Piano 🪵 24:42 - Table-Top Finger Workouts 25:42 - Using the Pendulum App for Self-Study 26:05 - Using the Pendulum App for Self-Study ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PendulumExercise #RhythmicGroupings #PianoExercise

Learn to play and count odd time signatures like 5/4, 7/4 and 10/4. Jason breaks down 3 practical methods to feel complex rhythms naturally. Jason demonstrates the difference between simply counting beats versus truly feeling musical cycles. You'll learn beat subdivision techniques, call-and-response phrasing, and accent grouping methods that make odd time signatures as comfortable as 4/4 time. Practice along with examples from Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and the Mission Impossible theme. Discover why thinking in "cycle counts" rather than traditional time signatures helps you compose and improvise more musically, and learn the practical difference between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16 time signatures. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:50 - Introduction & Musical Preview 01:05 - Why Time Signatures Can Be Confusing 02:47 - The Cycle Count Concept Explained 03:53 - Practical Composing Tips 06:55 - Daily Riff Practice Resources 08:29 - Method 1: Beat Division & Subdivision 08:52 - Dividing Beats by 2, 3, and 4 10:01 - 10-Beat Cycle Breakdown 10-Beat Cycle Breakdown 10:06 - A Major Scale in 5-Beat Cycles 10:28 - Scale Drill Practice Exercise 10:52 - Adding Harmony to Odd Time 12:33 - Playing on Subdivisions (E’s and A’s) 16:17 - Straight vs Swing Feel in Odd Time 17:45 - Understanding 5/4 vs 5/8 vs 5/16 19:13 - Method 2: Question & Answer Structure 19:49 - Method 2: Accent Grouping & Phrasing 20:38 - Grouping Large Numbers (10 as 3+3+4) 21:44 - Using Rhythm Syllables (Takita, Takajunu) 21:53 - Using Our Rhythm App 24:35 - Summary: 3 Methods Recap 25:05 - Pink Floyd 7/4 Example Analysis ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #OddTimeSignatures #OddMeter #PianoRhythm

Flip the traditional roles — put a captivating bass melody in the left hand and let the right hand drive the rhythm. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to flip the usual piano roles by creating compelling bass melodies in the left hand while the right hand provides rhythmic support, breaking down stepwise and leapwise melodic motion. Learn piano basslines with 10 grooves and rhythm patterns. This piano bassline tutorial shows how to turn an F minor pentatonic pattern into disco, salsa, funk, and other grooves using quavers, sixteenth notes, triplets, and a steady right-hand chord pulse. Learn to create multiple groovy F minor pentatonic bassline variations across quavers, sixteenth notes and triplets, with a steady right-hand pulse of chords. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the secrets of creating groovy, danceable basslines on piano. You'll learn why dividing beats into more subdivisions while playing less creates the perfect groove that makes people want to move. You'll discover 10+ distinct rhythm variations of the same bassline, each transformed by a different time feel — from simple quavers to complex sixteenth-note patterns and even triplets. You'll explore the essential ingredients of a compelling bassline: root, octave, fifth and minor third, plus embellishment notes that add flavour without overwhelming the groove. You'll also develop rock-solid timing with pulse chords in the right hand, and learn cluster chords, floating thirds and melodic licks that complement your bassline. The lesson emphasises body movement and internal pulse over metronome dependence. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:46 - Introduction & Bassline Preview 🎹 01:35 - What the Right Hand can do? 02:54 - Heptatonic Scales - Natural Minor & Dorian 03:28 - Essential Ingredients of Groovy Basslines 05:18 - Essential Ingredients of Groovy Basslines 06:03 - The Groove Formula: Divide More, Play Less 06:42 - Foundational Notes: Root, Octave & Fifth 07:49 - Adding Minor Third & Embellishment Notes 09:21 - Right Hand Pulse Chord Options 11:26 - Cluster Chords Technique 12:59 - Preparing the Right Hand 14:04 - Pattern 1: Simple Quaver Bassline 15:45 - Pattern 2: Displaced Third Variation 16:59 - Pattern 3: Introducing Sixteenth Notes 18:12 - Pattern 4: Advanced 16th Note Rhythm 19:02 - Pattern 5: Subdivision Variation 19:56 - Son Clave Rhythm Application 🥁 20:16 - Tresillo Pattern Breakdown 22:31 - Salsa-Style Bassline Variation 23:50 - Triplet Division Concepts ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoBasslines #PianoGroove #RhythmPatterns
