Learn how to harmonize any Melakarta raga on piano with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music — turn 72 ragas into playable chords. 🌐 The app in this video — Melakarta Sphere, all 72 ragas in 3D, free, no signup: https://melakarta.nathanielschool.com Ever wondered how to harmonize a raga on piano? This lesson shows how the 72 Melakarta ragas are built and how to turn each one into playable chords. We walk through the logic behind the system: Sa and Pa stay fixed, the perfect fifth is always kept, and you choose from three Re, three Ga, two Ma — Shuddha Madhyama (the perfect fourth) and Prati Madhyama (the augmented/sharp fourth) — three Dha and three Ni. That simple maths gives every heptatonic scale under the sun. You'll see the twelve chakras (Indu, Netra, Agni, Veda, Bana, Rutu, Rishi, Vasu, Brahma, Disi, Rudra, Aditya) and hear how ragas map to Western modes: Kharaharapriya against Dorian and the Kafi thaat, Hanumatodi leaning Phrygian, and Mayamalavagowla (the 15th Melakarta), also called the double harmonic major. We also touch Harikambhoji (Mixolydian) and Charukesi (Mixolydian flat 6), then harmonize each raga into triads and seventh chords, including cluster and augmented shapes. This is for pianists who only know major and minor, and for Carnatic musicians curious about Western harmony. Play along, pick a raga, build its chords, and tell us your favourite in the comments. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Indian Music Theory - Carnatic Ragas - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-EsBVRojlfDQ078y6R438k 📚 Indian Classical Music - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-uvkwcbt1C4RbIJ8t1n3vm 🗂️ The Major Scale Understood with ALL Intervals - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-E6rHuGKoYQk_8-jOw3_Bh 📋 Minor Scales - Theory, Exercises & Compositions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- 🎶 Cadences & Chord Progressions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_sKjWd1c7K_S55cZ15jAKI ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - What Does It Mean to Harmonize a Scale? 🎹 00:33 - The Melakarta Concept in One Idea 00:44 - Why Sa and Pa Stay Fixed 00:56 - Augmented Fourth vs Diminished Fifth 01:09 - Keeping the Perfect Fifth 01:33 - What Harmonize Really Means 🎵 01:40 - Harmonizing for Collaboration 02:12 - Scaling from Triads to Seventh Chords 02:50 - Kharaharapriya ≈ Dorian & Kafi Thaat 03:03 - Melakarta as Heptatonic Thaats 03:52 - The Melakarta Sphere Mode 🌐 04:11 - Selecting Hanumatodi 04:27 - Janya Ragas Explained 04:37 - Playing the Scale with Tanpura 05:01 - Arohana, Avarohana & Both 05:15 - Swing Feature for Western Players 05:28 - Hanumatodi Sounds Phrygian 05:57 - Reading the Interval Labels 07:07 - Brain Mode: The Mind Map 07:46 - The Chakra Navigator 07:58 - Twelve Chakras Named 08:11 - Grid & Mandala Modes 08:36 - Indu Chakra: Kanakangi 09:52 - Building Re from C 10:39 - Building Ga: Diminished to Major Third 11:25 - Netra Chakra: Very Phrygian 11:37 - Agni Chakra: Middle Eastern Colour 11:46 - Veda Chakra: All Things Minor 13:02 - Mayamalavagowla = Double Harmonic Major 13:26 - Bana Chakra: Where the Major Lives 13:37 - Harikambhoji (Mixolydian) & Charukesi 13:43 - Charukesi: Mixolydian Flat 6 🎶 14:03 - Rutu Chakra 14:12 - The Prati Madhyama Hemisphere 14:38 - Rishi to Aditya Chakras 15:30 - Listen Mode: Sing a Raga 16:46 - Drills Mode for Swaras 16:54 - Stage Mode: Kritis & Sections 17:15 - Adjusting Tempo & Instruments 18:02 - Western Mode: Visualize the Scale 18:44 - Chords for Any Raga 🎹 20:05 - Inversions & Chord Colors 20:21 - Function: Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant 20:32 - Raga Fit & Janya Chord Options 22:08 - Tanpura, Talas & Practice Setup 23:30 - Wrapping Up: Harmonize Any Raga 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #MelakartaRagas #CarnaticMusic #PianoHarmony
Learn how to group 16 piano scales into major-esque and minor-esque categories using the third interval. Theory lesson by Jason Zac.
Learn piano, theory, and ear training through Uptown Funk — D Dorian, 7th chord inversions, voice leading & 4 funky comping patterns. What if you could learn piano, music theory, ear training, AND arranging — all from one song? In this lesson, Jason Zac uses Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars as a vehicle for all four goals at once. The twist? There's no piano in the song. We start by identifying the mode (D Dorian) and the two chords driving the whole track: D minor 7th and G dominant 7th. You'll learn minors in packs of four — Natural, Harmonic, Dorian and Melodic — so you'll instantly recognise the funky minor sound anywhere. Then we get into the piano work: all four inversions of Dm7 and G7, voice leading through common tones, and rhythm patterns including block chords, octave toggling bass, staccato funk articulation, and triplet (tresio) feels. Every shape connects to a usable groove. Next comes the song ingredient breakdown — vocal bass line on a 16th-note grid, Bruno Mars's vocal as the rhythmic engine, plus guitar comping, horn harmonies and the bass guitar. You'll learn to reverse-engineer a stereo file like a DAW, then translate those ingredients into FOUR funky right-hand piano patterns paired with a transcribed bass line. Ready to practise smarter? Learn 5 left hand piano patterns across 5 keys using one harmonic concept — explore rock, blues, and folk grooves with Jason Zac. Ever wondered how one simple harmonic idea can sound like five completely different genres? In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through five left hand piano patterns across five different keys — each one shifting the entire vibe of your music. We start with a power chord foundation and build outward using 6ths, 7ths, major and minor intervals. Because the third is left undefined, these voicings work in both major and minor contexts — giving you incredible harmonic flexibility for improvisation. You'll explore patterns in E, G#, Ab, F#, B, and A — moving through rock, blues, folk, and even experimental time signatures like 5/8 and 7/8. Each key gets its own rhythmic pattern with carefully placed accents and gaps that change the entire feel of your playing. A highlight of this lesson is Jason's tip on right hand improvisation: sing your melody first, then play it. This unlocks new rhythmic and melodic ideas that your fingers alone might never discover. We also touch on blues scales, Dorian mode, Mixolydian flavour, and how to mix the third for fresh harmonic colour. Learn old-school ear training by singing intervals first and checking on piano. Build real relative pitch across major, minor & modal scales. Most musicians practise ear training the wrong way — by playing along with the piano or guitar while singing. That's mimicking, not hearing. In this lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shares the old-school approach: sing the note FIRST, then play your instrument only to check the answer. We begin by getting Sa wired into your system using a G drone or tanpura, then work through the full major scale using Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni). You can also use movable-DO solfège or simple syllables like la-la or na-na — whatever keeps your brain untangled. From there we expand into Mixolydian, Dorian, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor — each built by altering just a few intervals from the major scale. You'll practise singing close intervals first (Sa-Re-Sa), then widen the gap step by step (Sa-Ga-Sa, Sa-Ma-Sa, Sa-Pa-Sa) both above and below the tonic. This builds true relative pitch — the ability to hear how one note relates to another, the foundation of every melody. This isn't just an ear training drill. It's a 3D workout combining ear, theory and technique — because if you sing the right note but press the wrong key, you've still got work to do. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and try the exercise in different keys (find your preferred vocal key!). Once the order is comfortable, jumble the intervals to make it more musical and creative. If you'd like more singing-based ear training, sight singing or relative pitch lessons, drop a comment and let us know. Learn rhythmic displacement, anticipation and delay techniques on piano with 3 melodic exercises that build better timing and groove. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to transform simple melodies into groovy, professional-sounding performances through strategic timing shifts. You'll learn three essential melodic patterns in G major, harmonising with thirds to create rich textures. You'll discover how to use your pinky as a pedal tone while developing finger independence, plus how to add alternating eighth notes for that signature rhythmic feel. The core concepts cover anticipation (moving notes before the beat) and delay (moving notes after the beat), progressing from quarter notes to eighth-note subdivisions and advanced sixteenth-note patterns. You'll practise with body movement and Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma) to internalise the rhythm naturally. You'll also explore modal variations including Mixolydian, Dorian and harmonic minor to add sophisticated flavour to your playing. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:41 - Introduction & Lesson Overview 🎹 01:37 - Scale of Exercise 02:24 - Learning the Three Base Melodies 02:25 - Melody 1: Sa Re Ga Ma Pattern 02:56 - Melody 2: The Fifth Degree Approach 03:25 - Melody 3: Lower Seventh Integration 03:38 - Harmonizing with Thirds in Right Hand 04:00 - Understanding Major vs Minor Thirds 05:18 - Singing while Practicing 06:22 - Indian Swaras vs Do-Re-Mi System 06:59 - Adding the Pedal Tone (Pinky G) 08:10 - Left Hand Eighth Note Pattern 09:40 - Counting Technique 10:04 - Rhythmic Displacement Concepts 10:52 - What is Rhythmic Anticipation? 11:31 - What is Rhythmic Delay? 12:11 - Anticipation Exercise - All Three Melodies 14:31 - Delay Exercise - All Three Melodies 15:31 - Mixing Anticipation & Delay 16:55 - Creative Practice Sessions 17:25 - Advanced: Sixteenth Note Subdivisions 17:48 - The E’s and A’s of Beat Division 19:09 - Body Movement for Complex Rhythms 19:40 - G Major to C Major Transition 20:31 - Key Modulations: Root, Fourth, Fifth 20:56 - D Mixolydian Mode 21:25 - A Dorian Exploration 22:02 - Natural Minor vs Harmonic Minor 22:59 - Mixolydian Flat 6 Scale 23:19 - Lesson Summary & Next Steps 24:40 - Practice Schedule Recommendations ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #RhythmicDisplacement #PianoTiming #PianoGroove
Learn correct fingering for piano triads and inversions to play chord progressions smoothly. The biggest mistake piano players make is thinking about fingering for the current chord only. Instead, you should consider at least two chords together. This lesson teaches you to prepare your fingering based on what comes next, making transitions smooth and effortless. Learn why ring finger should be dedicated to black notes in the upper register, how to position your thumb on black keys without feeling trapped, and why index finger at the edge gives you more control. Practical examples include D major, G major, A minor, Eb major and more, plus left hand root positioning for any chord progression. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:33 - The Correct Fingering for playing a Triad 00:54 - Question often asked by Music Students 01:22 - Guitars and Chord Shapes 01:51 - Similar Chord Shapes 02:49 - The Importance of the Root Position? 03:16 - What we will learn? 04:35 - D Major & its inversions 05:02 - Root Position, Ist and 2nd Inversion 05:43 - 2 note, 3 note & 4 note chords 06:15 - Why Chord Inversions? 06:35 - Proper Voice Leading 07:21 - Shifting to the next chord 08:38 - Fingering Considerations 09:37 - Making the best use of the 5 Fingers 10:16 - Planning for the next chord 11:42 - Shifting from D Major to other Triads 12:47 - What should the Left Hand play? 13:26 - Starting from the Ist Inversion 13:50 - The Challenge of the Thumb 15:06 - Using the Index Finger 15:48 - Index vs Thumb 16:38 - 2nd Inversion of D Major 16:52 - The Ring Finger 20:39 - Chord Randomizer 21:24 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoFingering #ChordInversions #PianoTriads
Practice all 7 modes of the major scale with right hand exercises and left hand accompaniment. In this lesson, you learn to practice all seven modes of the major scale by staying on one root and shaping each mode with both close and spread right hand positions. The right hand works on expansion, compression, finger control and clear interval awareness while the left hand builds strength through scale movement and fifth chords. The tritone for each mode is explained so you understand how harmony shifts across Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. You will also learn the key notes that define every mode and how to highlight them while ascending and descending. Learn all 21 modes of the Major, Melodic Minor and Harmonic Minor scales — how they're built, how they sound, and the chords that bring out each mood. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches all 21 modes across the Major, Melodic Minor (Jazz) and Harmonic Minor scales, studying how each mode is built, how it sounds, and which chords bring out its character. You'll cover the 7 modes of the major scale (Ionian to Locrian), the 7 modes of the melodic minor (jazz) scale, and the 7 modes of the harmonic minor scale, plus how to harmonise each mode with matching chords. Practise these ideas across different keys like G and F, and discover the purpose behind every mode — from bright Lydian to exotic Phrygian Dominant. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 01:39 - Modes of Major Sale 02:29 - How to look at Modes 03:42 - Major Scale - G Ionian (1st degree) 03:59 - Major Scale - A Dorian (2nd degree) 06:29 - Major Scale - B Phrygian (3rd degree) 07:35 - Major Scale - C Lydian (4th degree) 08:29 - Major Scale - D Mixolydian (5th degree) 09:54 - Major Scale - E Aeolian (6th degree) 10:30 - Major Scale - F♯ Locrian (7th degree) 11:20 - G Melodic Minor (1st Degree) 12:23 - Melodic Minor - A Dorian ♭2 (2nd Degree) 13:17 - Melodic Minor - Bb Lydian Augmented (3rd Degree) 15:19 - Melodic Minor - C Lydian Dominant (4th Degree) 17:31 - Melodic Minor - D Mixolydian ♭6 (5th Degree) 18:08 - Melodic Minor - E Locian (♮2) (6th Degree) 18:54 - Melodic Minor - F♯ Altered Dominant (7th Degree) Melodic Minor - F♯ Altered Dominant (7th Degree) 20:38 - G Harmonic Minor (1st Degree) 21:20 - A Locrian (♮6) 21:41 - B♭ Ionian (♯5) 22:11 - C Dorian (♯4) 22:58 - D Phrygian Dominant 24:00 - E♭ Lydian (♯2) 24:20 - F♯ Super Locrian (𝄫7) 25:03 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ModesExplained #MelodicMinor #HarmonicMinor
Learn to practice major & minor chords using cadences and the circle of fifths. In this piano lesson, we'll explore how major and minor chords connect through cadences and the circle of fifths. You'll learn how to identify scales and modes based on simple two-chord progressions like V–I (authentic) and IV–I (plagal). We'll also see how combinations like major to major, major to minor, minor to major and minor to minor create unique sounds: Major to Major gives the Ionian (Major scale), Major to Minor a Harmonic Minor feel, Minor to Major the Mixolydian, and Minor to Minor the Aeolian (Natural Minor). Finally, we'll apply this to real piano practice with inversions, smooth transitions, and a creative way to harmonize any scale. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:32 - Cadences & Circle of Fifths 01:32 - Revision of the Circle of Fifths 01:49 - Perfect 5th Galore 02:13 - Perfect 4th motion 02:41 - Cadences 04:06 - Plagal Cadence 05:19 - Binary Perspective - Major & Minor Triads 05:54 - V to I - Major Scale 06:58 - V to i - Harmonic Minor 08:10 - Highlighting the Scale 08:38 - Other scales wrt this Cadence 09:14 - v to I - Mixolydian 10:07 - v to i - Natural Minor 11:17 - Plagal Cadence - 4 to 1 12:26 - Major to Minor - Dorian 13:13 - iv - I (Charukeshi) - Mixolydian b6 14:07 - Minor to Minor 14:46 - Aeolian vs Harmonic Minor 16:05 - Think and Play 16:38 - Practice Goals ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoScales #Cadences #CircleOfFifths

Groove on the piano starts with playing the "off" beats confidently — in Part 1 of this series you'll build hand independence and a funky feel using chord progressions from the Dorian mode. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you step by step from the pulse hits outward to the off-beats. You'll form the Dorian scale and its chords, toggle the pulse, get comfortable playing everything "off" except beat 1, then build a popular eighth-note funky groove and a swung broken-chord feel. It's a practical, groove-first approach to rhythm — train your hands to lock into subdivisions and the funk takes care of itself.
