Learn how to group 16 piano scales into major-esque and minor-esque categories using the third interval. Theory lesson by Jason Zac. Ever wondered why some scales sound bright while others sound dark? In this theory lesson, Jason Zac introduces a simple binary framework to organise 16 different scales into just two categories β€” major-esque and minor-esque β€” based on a single defining interval: the third. A major-esque scale always contains a major third, while a minor-esque scale always contains a flat (minor) third. From this foundation, we explore eight major-esque scales including the major scale, mixolydian, lydian, lydian dominant, harmonic major, phrygian dominant (double harmonic major), and mixolydian flat 6. Each scale is built on the root A, played with supporting chord voicings, and connected to its emotional character. We then move into eight minor-esque scales: the natural minor, dorian, harmonic minor, jazz melodic minor, plus the more exotic Hungarian minor, Romanian minor, Neapolitan minor, and phrygian. You'll learn how the 6th and 7th degrees create four binary combinations within the traditional minor family, and how exotic scales introduce flat 2 and raised 4 intervals for that Eastern, Spanish, or Middle Eastern flavour. This lesson is especially valuable for composers working with Indian classical ragas, modal music, or any style where the 6th or 7th shifts between ascending and descending lines. Jason also shares ear training drills using sa-re-ga-ma syllables, pendulum-style interval singing, and chord pairings that lock each scale into your ear and fingers. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➑️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ========================= πŸ“Ή Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏑 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ========================= ▢️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Major Esque vs Minor Esque β€” 8 Scales Explained (Part 1) - https://youtu.be/bmy_bXpE900 🎯 Major-Esque Scales You NEED To Know (Part 2) - https://youtu.be/9aKo3JsXkMo πŸ”‘ Minor-Esque Scales Decoded: Exotic to Traditional (Part 3) - https://youtu.be/_DbME-fKHiI πŸ’‘ Play Smoother Thirds (Rhythm Drill) - https://youtu.be/e_gyu7219H0 πŸ“‚ Scales & Modes - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ========================= πŸŽ“ Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com πŸ“š All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:37 - Introduction: Why Group Scales? 01:35 - The Binary Concept: Major-esque vs Minor-esque 🎼 02:27 - What Defines a Major-esque Scale? An ear training quiz: identify the intervals between chords and in the bass, then check your answers as each question is explained. We usually identify intervals by hearing them with respect to the root or a lower pitched note. In this music quiz, we learn to identify the bass frequencies that eventually build chords and progressions. In this video, you’ll find a broad overview of the concepts of Musical Intervals and then an explanation of the answers to each question below: Q1. What is the interval between 1st and 2nd Chord? Q2. What is the interval between the 2 chords? Q3. What are the intervals in the Bass? Q4. What are the 5 intervals played in the Bass? Root = F# Q5. What are other 2 intervals w.r.t Root = A πŸ‘‰πŸΌπŸ‘Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube πŸ‘‚πŸ½ All Ear Training exercises - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-GHvpugWvYgEuLAL4f01ZK 🎢 Train your Harmonic Ear - https://youtu.be/Neg-ZMqC-oI 🎹 Intervals in Context with CHORDS - https://youtu.be/DQEIvWWLIs8 πŸ“œ Music Theory - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9UnPiTktveaPrye0exDY9N 𝄒 All my Bass guitar Lessons in One Place - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_MyT_ikJRfB6HDho5QNrkJ 🀩Learn iconic Bass lines on piano - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_bA-24IkQ31GFjbWaN5qf8 πŸŽ“ Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://www.nathanielschool.com/ πŸ“‡ Courses, Workshops, Videos, or Private lessons: https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 🎼 Register for our virtual workshops & lessons: https://geni.us/UpcomingClasses πŸ“Ή Our Video Courses (Lifetime Bundle): https://www.nathanielschool.com/members-videos 🎢 Learn all about our flagship course, "Music Method": https://www.nathanielschool.com/musicmethod πŸ“š All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://www.nathanielschool.com/freelessons 🐣 All our Beginner Piano Lessons in one Place: https://www.nathanielschool.com/free-lessons/tags/beginner-1 πŸ•°οΈ 00:00 - Introduction 02:55 - Quiz 1 03:52 - Explanation 1 04:34 - Quiz 2 05:08 - Explanation 2 05:29 - Quiz 3 06:22 - Explanation 3 07:36 - Quiz 4 08:32 - Explanation 4 09:10 - Quiz 5 09:58 - Explanation 5 10:38 - Summary πŸ“§ Customized & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com πŸ“ž +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://geni.us/AbsenceYouTubeJZB πŸ’° Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal #EarTraining #IntervalEarTraining #MusicQuiz
