Learn Dolly Parton's Here You Come Again on piano — the intro riff, the bass line, every chord, and both key changes, from F# to G to Ab. This sounds like a simple pop song. It isn't. Most of the chords are sevenths, ninths and elevenths, and the whole song goes up a semitone — twice. So if you want to learn 2-5-1 progressions, slash chords and modulation from one song, this is a good one. We start with the intro riff. Your right hand holds an F# major chord and the thumb walks down — F#, F, Eb. Underneath, the left hand plays octaves: F#, Ab, Bb, B. The Ab isn't a chord. It's just the step that gets you to the Bb. The verse uses the same chords without the passing notes, then moves to Ebm7 and Abm7 — with the 7th in the bass — and two climbs over C#. The chorus is a 2-5-1 in A: Bm7, D/E, Amaj7, then G/A, the gospel 11th. Look at Bm7 and D/E. Your right hand doesn't move a single finger. Only the bass steps from B to E. That's the slash-chord rule — what's on the left of the slash goes in your right hand, the note on the right goes in your left. So Bm7 is really just D major over B. Then the song goes up to G, and up again to Ab for the outro. Nothing new to learn — the same shapes, a semitone higher. The one thing to watch: in G, the chorus starts on C minor instead of B minor. And if the licks aren't coming yet, just play through the chords. Here You Come Again was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and recorded by Dolly Parton in 1977. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 📺 RELATED LESSONS How to Play Slash Chords With Purpose on Piano (5 Pro Ways) ➡️ https://youtu.be/4LtOItbMiW0 Slash Chords vs Inversions on Piano ➡️ https://youtu.be/UhO-cWQLC-k Use SIMPLE Triads to Play COMPLEX Piano Chords: 7th Chords (Part 1) ➡️ https://youtu.be/1G6uZ0QRKN0 The 2-5-1 Jazz Piano Chord Progression Explained ➡️ https://youtu.be/SAOjr5ejxbs How to Read Chord Charts Like a Pro Musician ➡️ https://youtu.be/4qHUtgJ7XoE 🎓 https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ free lessons ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 - Here You Come Again — performance 00:52 - Why this song: Dolly Parton’s scale changes 02:43 - F# major: six sharps, and one is E# 02:56 - The intro chord: F#, F#maj7/Bb, Bmaj9 03:35 - The intro in three levels 04:56 - Octaves: hold the hand like a divider 05:28 - The bass lick: C#, Eb, Ab, Eb, F# 06:32 - The whole intro, slowly 07:11 - The verse 07:43 - Ebm7, Abm7 and the lick 08:11 - B over C# and the first climb 09:08 - Verse 2 and the second climb 10:04 - The chorus: a 2-5-1 into A 11:14 - Into E major: slash chords galore 11:54 - F#7, A over B, and the whole chorus 12:34 - Up to G: the guitar part 13:38 - Em7, Am7 and C over D 14:03 - The guitar solo on piano 14:58 - The chorus in G 15:47 - C over Bb into Ab: the outro 16:54 - Wrap-up 💛 Support these free lessons (PayPal) ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp ➡️ +91 77604 56847 · https://wa.me/917760456847 📧 music@nathanielschool.com #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #DollyParton
Take one note — D — and the six chords that contain it: D major, D minor, G major, G minor, B♭ major and B minor. One chord alone lets you imagine many scales. Two chords narrow it down. Three chords and the scale is obvious. That is how chord charts really work: you read chords and you interpret scales. A chord is an unfinished scale. A triad gives you three notes; a scale needs seven. So the four notes you add are up to you — and that is where every scale comes from. In this lesson I build scales the unconventional way: not tone–tone–semitone, not from the modes, but from chords. One chord leaves four notes open to your imagination — D major alone gives you D major, D mixolydian, D lydian, D harmonic major, and it is also the dominant of G harmonic minor and G melodic minor. Two chords narrow it down to one or two notes: D major with G major gives you D major, D mixolydian, or G harmonic major if you make G the tonic; D major with G minor gives you the harmonic minors, melodic minors and harmonic majors; D major with B♭ major fits only one scale, and it is a beautiful one. Three chords and the scale is decided — D, G and B minor live in D major and in G major at the same time, and the functions simply swap. That is how chord charts work. You read chords and you interpret scales. You are not locked to a key signature — you let the chord, or the cadence, or the trio, dictate the scale. ✏️ Correction (05:45): I call the G minor triad “the fifth, or the dominant, of D Phrygian”. G is the FOURTH degree of D Phrygian (D E♭ F G A B♭ C) — the fifth is A — so G minor is the subdominant, the iv, of that scale. The very next sentence has it right: start from the chord and choose tonic, dominant or subdominant. Ten piano exercises, one chord, and nothing else. Everything in this lesson happens on E7 — and every single drill transfers to any dominant 7th you own. Treat it like a gym: same equipment, ten different movements. ✏️ Correction: at 1:44 I misspeak - a dominant 7th is 1, 3, 5, ♭7, so E7 is E, G#, B, D. 🎹 Take one chord and build ten gym-style piano workouts around it. In this practical lesson we use a single E7 (dominant seventh) chord and turn it into a full technique session that transfers to any chord you like. First we break down the E7 shape — root, major third, fifth and flat seventh — with sensible fingering for both hands and all four positions: root, first, second and third inversion. Then we run the ten drills: the inversion ladder, the siren, piano jumping jacks, the horn throw, the dead hang, the speed bag, the rope climb, the pyramid set, the crunch and a cool-down stretch. Along the way you'll practise arpeggios against block chords, alternating two-note patterns, tritone swaps between the third and flat seventh, finger-by-finger lifts, speed work with a bouncing wrist, hand-crossing and accent groupings in twos, threes, fives and sevens. This is for pianists who can build chords but want them to feel musical and coordinated. Get your piano out, start slow and try every workout on other chords around the circle of fifths — then tell us your favourite gesture for the horn throw in the comments. 🎛️ The Circle of Fifths app from 25:38 — Fifth Harmony. Learn how to harmonize any Melakarta raga on piano with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music — turn 72 ragas into playable chords. 🌐 The app in this video — Melakarta Sphere, all 72 ragas in 3D, free, no signup: https://melakarta.nathanielschool.com Ever wondered how to harmonize a raga on piano? This lesson shows how the 72 Melakarta ragas are built and how to turn each one into playable chords. We walk through the logic behind the system: Sa and Pa stay fixed, the perfect fifth is always kept, and you choose from three Re, three Ga, two Ma — Shuddha Madhyama (the perfect fourth) and Prati Madhyama (the augmented/sharp fourth) — three Dha and three Ni. That simple maths gives every heptatonic scale under the sun. You'll see the twelve chakras (Indu, Netra, Agni, Veda, Bana, Rutu, Rishi, Vasu, Brahma, Disi, Rudra, Aditya) and hear how ragas map to Western modes: Kharaharapriya against Dorian and the Kafi thaat, Hanumatodi leaning Phrygian, and Mayamalavagowla (the 15th Melakarta), also called the double harmonic major. We also touch Harikambhoji (Mixolydian) and Charukesi (Mixolydian flat 6), then harmonize each raga into triads and seventh chords, including cluster and augmented shapes. This is for pianists who only know major and minor, and for Carnatic musicians curious about Western harmony. Play along, pick a raga, build its chords, and tell us your favourite in the comments. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Indian Music Theory - Carnatic Ragas - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-EsBVRojlfDQ078y6R438k 📚 Indian Classical Music - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-uvkwcbt1C4RbIJ8t1n3vm 🗂️ The Major Scale Understood with ALL Intervals - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-E6rHuGKoYQk_8-jOw3_Bh 📋 Minor Scales - Theory, Exercises & Compositions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- 🎶 Cadences & Chord Progressions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_sKjWd1c7K_S55cZ15jAKI ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - What Does It Mean to Harmonize a Scale? 🎹 00:33 - The Melakarta Concept in One Idea 00:44 - Why Sa and Pa Stay Fixed 00:56 - Augmented Fourth vs Diminished Fifth 01:09 - Keeping the Perfect Fifth 01:33 - What Harmonize Really Means 🎵 01:40 - Harmonizing for Collaboration 02:12 - Scaling from Triads to Seventh Chords 02:50 - Kharaharapriya ≈ Dorian & Kafi Thaat 03:03 - Melakarta as Heptatonic Thaats 03:52 - The Melakarta Sphere Mode 🌐 04:11 - Selecting Hanumatodi 04:27 - Janya Ragas Explained 04:37 - Playing the Scale with Tanpura 05:01 - Arohana, Avarohana & Both 05:15 - Swing Feature for Western Players 05:28 - Hanumatodi Sounds Phrygian 05:57 - Reading the Interval Labels 07:07 - Brain Mode: The Mind Map 07:46 - The Chakra Navigator 07:58 - Twelve Chakras Named 08:11 - Grid & Mandala Modes 08:36 - Indu Chakra: Kanakangi 09:52 - Building Re from C 10:39 - Building Ga: Diminished to Major Third 11:25 - Netra Chakra: Very Phrygian 11:37 - Agni Chakra: Middle Eastern Colour 11:46 - Veda Chakra: All Things Minor 13:02 - Mayamalavagowla = Double Harmonic Major 13:26 - Bana Chakra: Where the Major Lives 13:37 - Harikambhoji (Mixolydian) & Charukesi 13:43 - Charukesi: Mixolydian Flat 6 🎶 14:03 - Rutu Chakra 14:12 - The Prati Madhyama Hemisphere 14:38 - Rishi to Aditya Chakras 15:30 - Listen Mode: Sing a Raga 16:46 - Drills Mode for Swaras 16:54 - Stage Mode: Kritis & Sections 17:15 - Adjusting Tempo & Instruments 18:02 - Western Mode: Visualize the Scale 18:44 - Chords for Any Raga 🎹 20:05 - Inversions & Chord Colors 20:21 - Function: Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant 20:32 - Raga Fit & Janya Chord Options 22:08 - Tanpura, Talas & Practice Setup 23:30 - Wrapping Up: Harmonize Any Raga 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #MelakartaRagas #CarnaticMusic #PianoHarmony
One chord shape, four names, endless possibilities. Learn how the diminished 7th chord hides dominant 7♭9 chords, tritone subs, and two powerful resolutions. Comment 'diminished' for a free practice tool! 🛠 FREE PRACTICE TOOL - Master Key, the Diminished Seventh Laboratory. Every diminished 7th, all four resolutions, in the browser. No signup, no subscription: https://masterkey.nathanielschool.com The diminished 7th chord is arguably the most powerful chord in music — one shape with endless resolutions. In this piano tutorial we break down its theory and turn it into two practical drills you can play today. We start with the formation: a diminished 7th is minor thirds stacked on top of each other, so every inversion is another diminished 7th. That means only three of them exist across all 12 keys — B/D/F/Ab are one family, and you move up chromatically for the rest. We also separate it from the minor seventh flat five (the ii chord in a 2-5-1 minor). Then we explore the leading-tone diminished cadence: B diminished 7th resolving to C major and to A minor (its relative minor), giving you many destinations from one source. You'll see how the same shape works as a rootless dominant, turning into E7♭9, Bb7♭9, G7♭9 and Db7♭9 — four chords from one diminished 7th. Drill one climbs up (dominant 7 → diminished 7 → major or minor); drill two climbs down (diminished 7 → dominant 7 → resolution). Ideal for pianists who know major and minor chords and want a versatile harmonic tool. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Cadences & Chord Progressions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_sKjWd1c7K_S55cZ15jAKI 📚 Mysterious Chord Connections - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9bd7fnB4zMsgobcFj52N31 🗂️ Jazz Lessons - Chords, Standards & Exercises - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ZCriHyNonJasffWWSCS_E 📋 Chord Voicing & Inversions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🎶 My Favourite Chords of All Time - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_BXqRCVauDnJH7oHhIv-z7 ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #DiminishedChords #PianoChords #Cadences
Learn how to group 16 piano scales into major-esque and minor-esque categories using the third interval. Theory lesson by Jason Zac. Ever wondered why some scales sound bright while others sound dark? In this theory lesson, Jason Zac introduces a simple binary framework to organise 16 different scales into just two categories — major-esque and minor-esque — based on a single defining interval: the third. A major-esque scale always contains a major third, while a minor-esque scale always contains a flat (minor) third. From this foundation, we explore eight major-esque scales including the major scale, mixolydian, lydian, lydian dominant, harmonic major, phrygian dominant (double harmonic major), and mixolydian flat 6. Each scale is built on the root A, played with supporting chord voicings, and connected to its emotional character. We then move into eight minor-esque scales: the natural minor, dorian, harmonic minor, jazz melodic minor, plus the more exotic Hungarian minor, Romanian minor, Neapolitan minor, and phrygian. You'll learn how the 6th and 7th degrees create four binary combinations within the traditional minor family, and how exotic scales introduce flat 2 and raised 4 intervals for that Eastern, Spanish, or Middle Eastern flavour. This lesson is especially valuable for composers working with Indian classical ragas, modal music, or any style where the 6th or 7th shifts between ascending and descending lines. Jason also shares ear training drills using sa-re-ga-ma syllables, pendulum-style interval singing, and chord pairings that lock each scale into your ear and fingers. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ========================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ========================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Major Esque vs Minor Esque — 8 Scales Explained (Part 1) - https://youtu.be/bmy_bXpE900 🎯 Major-Esque Scales You NEED To Know (Part 2) - https://youtu.be/9aKo3JsXkMo 🔑 Minor-Esque Scales Decoded: Exotic to Traditional (Part 3) - https://youtu.be/_DbME-fKHiI 💡 Play Smoother Thirds (Rhythm Drill) - https://youtu.be/e_gyu7219H0 📂 Scales & Modes - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ========================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:37 - Introduction: Why Group Scales? 01:35 - The Binary Concept: Major-esque vs Minor-esque 🎼 02:27 - What Defines a Major-esque Scale? Learn relative minor reharmonization, suspended chords, inversions & cadences in this piano harmony lesson with Jason Zac. In this piano harmony lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down a powerful reharmonization technique — toggling between major chords and their relative minors. It's an age-old trick that instantly transforms the mood of any chord progression. We work through an 8-chord progression using second inversion voicings, starting from C major and travelling through D, Bb, Am, Ab, Bb, and back to a Csus4 → C resolution. Along the way, Jason adds a flowing melodic motif that ties the harmony together and teaches you how to use chord inversions musically. The lesson also explores suspended chords (sus4) and how they resolve beautifully to both major AND minor tonic chords. You'll learn multiple cadence options — plagal (IV-I), authentic (V-I), and surprise endings using the mediant (bIII). Plus, we touch on key modulation by treating the tonic as the dominant of the next key — a simple but incredibly useful pivot technique. The core concept: any chord in your progression can be swapped with its relative minor (or relative major) to create a fresh emotional colour. C major ↔ A minor, D major ↔ B minor, Bb major ↔ G minor, Ab major ↔ F minor. Once you internalize these relationships, you can reharmonize on the fly using your ear. Did you know you can swap ANY major chord with its relative minor and keep the same melody? Relative minor substitution, suspended chord resolutions, and the minor 2-5-1. We work through an 8-chord progression using second inversion voicings, swapping chords with their relative minors: C major and A minor, D major and B minor, Bb major and G minor, Ab major and F minor.
Learn piano, theory, and ear training through Uptown Funk — D Dorian, 7th chord inversions, voice leading & 4 funky comping patterns. What if you could learn piano, music theory, ear training, AND arranging — all from one song? In this lesson, Jason Zac uses Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars as a vehicle for all four goals at once. The twist? There's no piano in the song. We start by identifying the mode (D Dorian) and the two chords driving the whole track: D minor 7th and G dominant 7th. You'll learn minors in packs of four — Natural, Harmonic, Dorian and Melodic — so you'll instantly recognise the funky minor sound anywhere. Then we get into the piano work: all four inversions of Dm7 and G7, voice leading through common tones, and rhythm patterns including block chords, octave toggling bass, staccato funk articulation, and triplet (tresio) feels. Every shape connects to a usable groove. Next comes the song ingredient breakdown — vocal bass line on a 16th-note grid, Bruno Mars's vocal as the rhythmic engine, plus guitar comping, horn harmonies and the bass guitar. Learn London Bridge with the melody in your LEFT HAND plus 5 right-hand patterns in E major and E♭ major — piano independence workout. What if the LEFT hand played the melody and the right hand had to comp? In this lesson Jason flips the traditional roles of the two hands and walks you through London Bridge is Falling Down with the melody entirely in the left hand. The right hand isn't chilling out either — you'll work through 5 distinct rhythmic patterns: block fifth chords pumping the pulse, broken chords, a spinning arpeggio figure, a five-finger scalar run, and a syncopated pop groove. Each pattern targets a different layer of hand independence and forces you to hold the melody steady while your right hand stays in motion. We cover the whole workout in two keys — E major and E♭ major — with detailed fingering tips, dotted rhythm corrections, and sargam references for those who think in solfege. The pop groove is the trickiest of the five, so we slow it right down and build it from the ground up. For intermediate players, we then spice up the left-hand melody with 16th-note ornaments, grace notes, trills and small arpeggio fills. We also harmonise the melody by adding an alto voice in thirds underneath the soprano line — with a few moments where a perfect fifth sounds better than a third. If you've ever struggled with hand independence or felt stuck playing melody only in your right hand, this lesson will rewire how you practise. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Piano Syncopated Rhythms: Folk Melody Tutorial - https://youtu.be/6elW86pxMkI 🎯 Hand Independence: Melody & Chord Patterns - https://youtu.be/jy9lF061Aio 🔑 Left Hand Broken Chords Techniques - https://youtu.be/VQtExYO7Xys 💡 Melodic Arpeggios: Accents & Progressions - https://youtu.be/DbL4DJnwIhA 📂 Jazz Lessons - Chords, Standards & Exercises - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ZCriHyNonJasffWWSCS_E ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:30 - 🎹 Intro — Reversing the Roles of the Hands 01:10 - Why Left Hand Melody? 01:32 - Forms of Hand Independence 01:38 - Bass Line + Melody, Bach & Singing While Playing 01:57 - Today’s Approach — Flip It Around 03:16 - Lesson Overview — 5 Right Hand Patterns 05:08 - London Bridge Melody in E Major (Left Hand) 06:08 - ⚠️ Dotted Crotchet Rhythm Warning 06:32 - Sargam Reference: Pa Dha Pa Ma Ga Ma Pa 07:09 - Intermediate Preview — Ornaments & Alto Harmony 07:36 - Pattern 1: Block Fifth Chords (EBE / BEB) 08:23 - Tip: Hum the Melody Before You Play It 08:42 - Both Hands Together — Block Chord + LH Melody 09:04 - Slow-Down Strategy & Half-Note Variation 09:48 - Broken Chords — Slow Breakdown 11:09 - Pattern 3: Arpeggios (Low-Mid-High-Mid) 11:34 - Arpeggio Independence Workout 12:11 - Root Position vs First Inversion Arpeggios 12:49 - Pattern 4: Five-Finger Scalar Run 13:21 - Scalar Run + LH Melody Together 13:45 - Pattern 5: Syncopated Pop Groove 14:16 - Why the Pop Rhythm Is the Trickiest 14:37 - Slow-Down Strategy for the Pop Rhythm 15:21 - 🎼 E♭ Major Section Begins 17:00 - E♭ Block Chords 17:34 - E♭ Broken Chords 17:56 - E♭ Arpeggio — Try the Cello Register 18:23 - E♭ Five-Finger Drill (6th Interval Substitution) 18:41 - E♭ Pop Rhythm — Sing It First 19:41 - Ornaments & Alto Harmony 22:12 - Alto Harmony — Adding a Lower Third 23:54 - Summary — 5 Patterns + 2 Keys 24:35 - 📝 Homework — Try It in Minor! 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HandIndependence #LeftHandMelody #LondonBridge
Master harmony with this incredibly simple trick: play just 1 third interval in the right hand and 12 bass notes in the left to unlock almost every chord you will ever need on the piano. In this lesson, Jason Zac breaks down the theory and shows you how to apply it across all styles. Ever wondered how pro pianists build those rich, jazzy voicings that sound so much more interesting than basic triads? It all comes down to one tiny interval — the third. In this lesson, Jason breaks down a powerful bottom-up harmony approach that will change how you think about chord building forever. Using just two notes (A and C for the minor third, A and C# for the major third) anchored in your right hand, you'll learn how to harmonize them with 12 different bass notes underneath. The result? Triads, slash chords, seventh shells, jazz extensions, diminished and augmented voicings — all from the same two notes on top. We cover specific voicings like F major, Am/E, Dm7, D7sus4, G11, Bbmaj9, Bb minor major 9 (the James Bond chord), F# diminished, B7b9, A7/G Lydian, Eb half-diminished and many more. You'll also learn how to make 'clashing' bass notes actually work by thickening the harmony and using arpeggios instead of block chords. This lesson is perfect for intermediate pianists who want to break out of simple triads, understand jazz harmony, and finally figure out how to voice chords like the pros. Heavy theory content, practical demonstrations, and clear explanations throughout. If you want structured 1-on-1 instruction or our full video course library, links are in the pinned comment. Learn how to spice up traditional pop chord progressions using passing chords, secondary dominants, slash chords & borrowed chords on piano. Ever noticed how pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s feel so much richer than modern pop? That's because composers back then used classical and old-school harmonic techniques that are often forgotten today. In this lesson, Jason Zac shows you how to bring that depth back into your own playing. Starting with a plain diatonic C major progression, you'll add colour between the tonic and the relative minor using line clichés (C – G/B – Am), chromatic walk-downs, secondary dominants like E7 resolving to Am, and secondary diminished chords for that harmonic-minor flavour. Then we look at movement from I to IV (Mixolydian motion, Bb/C to F), gospel-style slash chords over a tonic pedal, and the ii–V–I with suspended dominants and tritone substitutions (Db7 replacing G7). The lesson also covers borrowed chords from the parallel minor — including the epic cadence (bVI – bVII – I) and the minor iv chord (Fm6 / D half-diminished) — plus slash chords as passing chords to create smooth chromatic bass lines. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:44 - Introduction: Why Modern Pop Sounds Flat 🎹 01:28 - The Problem with One-Chord Songs 01:36 - Diatonic Chords in C Major Recap 01:54 - Adding 7ths to Diatonic Chords 02:32 - Part 1: Tonic to Relative Minor Journey 03:07 - Line Cliché Walk-Down: C – G/B – Am 🎼 04:09 - Chromatic Drop from C to A 04:25 - A Major & F/A Slash Chord Option 05:00 - Secondary Dominant: E7 to Am 05:59 - Bluesy Melodic Possibilities 07:30 - Secondary Diminished Chord to Am 08:02 - Harmonic Minor Flavour vs Blues Flavour 08:38 - Part 2: Moving from I to IV 09:24 - Mixolydian Motion: Bb/C to F 🎵 10:06 - Gm to F Subtle Approach 10:32 - Part 3: Staying on the Tonic Creatively (Gospel Slash Chords) 11:05 - Dm/C, F/C and Plagal Colour 11:55 - Using the Diminished Chord as a Pass 12:07 - Drone-Style Tonic Grooves 12:20 - Passing Chords as Rhythmic Tools 12:58 - Part 4: The ii–V–I Cadence 13:38 - Altering the ii Chord as a Dominant 14:34 - Part 5: Working with the V Chord 14:38 - Sus4 Suspensions on the Dominant 15:00 - C/G Slash Over Dominant Function 15:38 - F/G – The 11th Sound 🎶 15:55 - Tritone Substitution: Db7 for G7 17:05 - Part 6: Borrowed Chords from Minor 17:35 - Why This Cadence Works for Any Song 18:12 - The Minor iv Chord (Fm6) 18:35 - Half-Diminished ii Connection 20:15 - Part 7: Slash Chords as Passing Chords 22:21 - Why Slash Chord Resolution Feels Powerful 22:46 - Caution: Don’t Trust Google Chords ⚠️ ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PassingChords #SecondaryDominants #PianoChords
Learn ear training by playing incomplete chords and singing the missing notes, using triads and seventh chords to improve your musical ear. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music develops your ear through active singing: you play incomplete chords on the piano while singing the missing notes — a technique that builds deeper harmonic understanding than traditional chord identification. You'll start with basic major triads, removing one note at a time (root, third or fifth) while your voice supplies the missing tone. The lesson progresses from simple diatonic exercises to harder progressions like the 1-5-6-4 sequence, forcing your ear to work harder and develop faster. It then advances to seventh-chord ear training using 2-5-1 progressions — essential for jazz and contemporary music — where you sing missing sevenths, roots, thirds and fifths while playing the remaining tones. Perfect for intermediate students ready to move beyond basic chord recognition toward the internal hearing needed for improvisation and composition. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Perfromance 00:23 - Introduction: Singing & Playing Demo 🎵 01:10 - Why Singing Beats Just Identification 01:30 - What Are Missing Notes? 02:02 - Indian Note Names: Sa, Gha, Pa, Ni 02:56 - Exercise 1: A Major Chord Setup 03:21 - Singing the Missing Root Note 🎶 03:38 - Diatonic Scale Practice Method 04:54 - Playing Root Notes in Lower Octave 05:10 - Checking Your Pitch Accuracy 05:54 - Exercise 2: Missing Third Notes 06:02 - Why Thirds Are Trickier to Hear 06:16 - Linear vs Random Chord Practice 07:43 - Exercise 3: Singing the Fifth 08:13 - Tritone vs Perfect Fifth Challenge 08:30 - Chord Progression Challenge: 1-5-6-4 08:48 - Missing Roots in Progression 09:07 - Missing Thirds in Progression 09:25 - Missing Fifths in Progression 09:59 - Seventh Chord Introduction 🎼 10:15 - D Major 7th Missing Note Demo 10:33 - 2-5-1 Progression Setup 10:46 - B Minor 7th - E Dom 7th - A Maj 7th 10:53 - Singing Missing Sevenths 11:04 - Singing Missing Roots in 7th Chords 11:12 - Piano Technique: Playing Incomplete Chords 11:52 - Different Keys Practice Suggestion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #EarTraining #SingingTriads #ChordEarTraining
Learn to harmonize piano and voice using thirds in G harmonic minor. Build musicianship with tenor and alto harmony exercises. Learn the art of piano and voice harmony with this comprehensive lesson on coordinating melody and harmony between two instruments. You'll discover how to play piano melody while singing harmonic thirds, just like legendary groups such as The Beatles, ABBA, and Queen. This lesson focuses on G harmonic minor scale harmonization using tenor and alto thirds. You'll learn the difference between upper thirds (tenor) and lower thirds (alto), understanding why tenor harmony is traditionally played an octave below the soprano melody for optimal sound quality. Practice exercises include ascending and descending scale harmonization, where your right hand plays the melody while your voice sings the corresponding third intervals. The lesson covers both major and minor thirds within the harmonic minor structure, helping you develop crucial ear training and coordination skills. Advanced musicians will appreciate the theoretical foundation covering heptatonic scale harmonization and the practical application of these concepts in performance settings. This technique builds overall musicianship and prepares you for more complex vocal and instrumental arrangements. Nail all 24 major and minor chords with this chromatic second-inversion piano exercise. Learn voice leading, block chords, arpeggios, smooth chord progressions, and how to practise every major and minor triad across the keyboard. Learn to practise all 12 major and 12 minor chords in second inversion using chromatic voice-leading patterns, block chords and arpeggios. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the power of second-inversion triads with a chromatic exercise that covers all 12 major and 12 minor chords, focusing on voice leading that creates smooth, musical progressions. You'll discover why second inversions are so effective for voice leading — with the root in the middle of the chord, you create harmonic movements that sound more sophisticated than root-position progressions. You'll learn to identify major and minor thirds quickly by asking questions like 'C is the major third of which triad?' You'll practise multiple patterns including block chords, high-low-middle-low arpeggios and reinforced-melody techniques. Each chromatic step reveals two chords — one major and one minor — creating 24 total progressions that flow beautifully together while sharpening your ear. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:54 - Introduction to Second Inversion Triads 🎹 01:09 - Why Choose Second Inversion for Voice Leading 01:26 - Understanding Root Position vs Inversions 01:49 - The Chromatic Climbing Exercise Overview 02:17 - Major vs Minor Third Identification 03:24 - Starting with C: Ab Major and A Minor 05:23 - Block Chord Practice Pattern 05:39 - High-Low-Middle-Low Arpeggio Pattern 🎵 05:56 - Reinforcing the Melody Note Technique 06:51 - C# Progression: A Major to Bb Minor 07:49 - Left Hand with Chord Roots 08:24 - D Progression: Bb Major to B Minor 08:47 - D# Progression: B Major to C Minor 09:56 - E Progression: C Major to C# Minor 10:19 - F Progression: Db Major to D Minor 11:17 - F# Progression: D Major to Eb Minor 11:36 - G Progression: Eb Major to E Minor 11:49 - G# Progression: E Major to F Minor 12:04 - A Progression: F Major to F# Minor 13:19 - A# Progression: F# Major to G Minor 13:34 - B Progression: G Major to G# Minor 14:10 - Completing the Chromatic Circle 14:35 - Left Hand Root Movement Practice 16:12 - Ear Training with Major/Minor Thirds 16:23 - Chord Trees Composition Concept 🌳 16:41 - Practice Tips for All Skill Levels ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordInversions #PianoTriads #VoiceLeading
Learn interval inversions and reverse ear training to improve your piano playing, composition and musical hearing. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music reveals an approach to ear training most teachers never cover — interval inversions — showing you how to hear and practise intervals in both ascending and descending directions. You'll learn the Rule of 9, where major thirds become minor sixths, perfect fourths transform into perfect fifths, and the tritone stays unchanged when inverted. You'll work through every interval chromatically from unison to octave, hearing exactly how each inversion sounds and feels. The lesson goes beyond basic ear training with practical applications for technique, composition and arrangement, so you break free from only practising upward motion and develop fluency above and below any root. Learn essential piano note recognition beyond memorisation — master intervals, chord progressions and practice techniques. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music reveals how understanding note relationships and intervals creates the foundation for advanced playing, going far beyond simple memorisation. You'll learn the complete system: starting with individual notes, progressing through intervals (minor thirds, perfect fifths, tritones), and building toward chord progressions. You'll discover how each note connects to others — like how Eb relates to A as a tritone, or how Bb to Eb forms a perfect fourth while Eb to Bb creates a perfect fifth. You'll also explore a Musical Note Generator practice tool with four modes — Beginner (random notes), Intermediate (interval training), Chord Progressions and Circle Patterns — each with tempo control and theory integration. Perfect for piano students, teachers and any instrumentalist wanting to strengthen their musical foundation. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction to Note Recognition Importance 🎹 00:40 - Understanding Musical Intervals & Connections 01:07 - The 4-Note Practice Loop Method 01:18 - Understanding Musical Intervals & Connections 02:15 - Beginner Mode: Random Note Generation 03:15 - Practicing with All 12 Notes 03:49 - White Keys Only Practice Mode 04:11 - Speed Control & Tempo Adjustments 04:43 - Swing, Triplets, Quaver & Semi-Quaver Practice Modes 05:06 - Enharmonic Notes (E# & F♭) Mode 05:17 - Intermediate Mode: Interval Training 05:29 - Complete Interval Reference Guide 07:14 - Minor Thirds Practice Demonstration 09:19 - Perfect Fifths Training Exercise 09:41 - Using the Music Theory Glossary 📚 09:59 - Chord Progressions Mode Overview 10:47 - Dorian Rock Progression (F) 11:56 - Jazz Progression Demonstration 🎷 12:27 - Circle Pattern Mode Explained 13:54 - From Notes to Intervals to Chords 14:33 - Final Thoughts & Practice Tips ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoIntervals #NoteRecognition #MusicTheory

Learn to practice major & minor chords using cadences and the circle of fifths. In this piano lesson, we'll explore how major and minor chords connect through cadences and the circle of fifths. You'll learn how to identify scales and modes based on simple two-chord progressions like V–I (authentic) and IV–I (plagal). We'll also see how combinations like major to major, major to minor, minor to major and minor to minor create unique sounds: Major to Major gives the Ionian (Major scale), Major to Minor a Harmonic Minor feel, Minor to Major the Mixolydian, and Minor to Minor the Aeolian (Natural Minor). Finally, we'll apply this to real piano practice with inversions, smooth transitions, and a creative way to harmonize any scale. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:32 - Cadences & Circle of Fifths 01:32 - Revision of the Circle of Fifths 01:49 - Perfect 5th Galore 02:13 - Perfect 4th motion 02:41 - Cadences 04:06 - Plagal Cadence 05:19 - Binary Perspective - Major & Minor Triads 05:54 - V to I - Major Scale 06:58 - V to i - Harmonic Minor 08:10 - Highlighting the Scale 08:38 - Other scales wrt this Cadence 09:14 - v to I - Mixolydian 10:07 - v to i - Natural Minor 11:17 - Plagal Cadence - 4 to 1 12:26 - Major to Minor - Dorian 13:13 - iv - I (Charukeshi) - Mixolydian b6 14:07 - Minor to Minor 14:46 - Aeolian vs Harmonic Minor 16:05 - Think and Play 16:38 - Practice Goals ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoScales #Cadences #CircleOfFifths

You'll start with Hexatonic (6-note) scales drawn from major, minor and modal systems like Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian and Mixolydian, then move into the Barry Harris 6-Diminished system. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:40 - Two Chords at a time with Inversions 01:46 - How to form Hexatonic Scales 02:30 - The Sunday (Gospel) Scale 02:44 - The 2 Alternating Triads - Bb Major & C minor 03:26 - Floating Inversions for Gospel Music 04:00 - The IV Chord (Plagal Cadence) 04:46 - A minor hexatonic from pentatonic 05:14 - Making It Hexatonic 05:43 - Comparing with the Pentatonic Scale 06:43 - Singing Chords with Voice Leading 07:13 - Dorian Hexatonic (Left Hand Practice) 07:39 - Building on Modal Sounds 07:53 - Dorian Mode 08:25 - Lydian Mode 09:10 - Great Piano Workout 09:30 - Phrygian Mode 10:13 - Mixolydian Mode 10:56 - Revision of the Hexatonic 13:07 - Two Octatonic Scales 13:35 - C Major 6 Diminished 14:04 - Resolution Notes with Swing feel 14:19 - C Major 6th Chord 15:04 - Diminished 7th 15:51 - Minor 6th Diminished Scale (Barry Harris) 17:37 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HexatonicScales #ChordInversions #BarryHarris
Learn how to use passing chords on the piano with three key concepts: slash chords, secondary dominants and secondary diminished. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music makes passing chords easy by building them around three important music theory and composition concepts, slash chords, secondary dominants and secondary diminished. Based on the number of notes that resolve to chords other than the tonic, you find a home away from home, full of ideas to reharmonize and add flavour to an existing chord progression. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 🎶 00:44 - Introduction 👋 01:17 - Types of Passing Chords 02:09 - Chromatic Note before the Target (Landing) 📝 03:10 - Chord Qualities - Functional Harmony Basics 03:32 - The new home - Tension to Resolution 03:54 - What Are Passing Chords? 🎵 04:23 - G Major → Slash Chords 04:55 - G/D & G/B Explained 05:49 - How to form a Slash Chord? 06:33 - Singing the Chord Tones 07:17 - Logic Behind the Resolution 10:08 - Resolving to all chords of G Major 11:52 - Building Melody ✨ 12:10 - Application of Slash Chords over the G major scale 13:18 - Secondary Dominants - Music Theory 14:14 - Resolving to A minor 15:01 - F# is the 5 of the B 15:39 - All Secondary chords of the G Major Scale 16:29 - Double Resolution 17:14 - Understanding Secondary Diminished Chords 17:49 - Diminished 7th Chord 18:18 - 4 Resolution Points 19:14 - Dim7 → Dominant 7 → Major/Minor Triad 19:57 - How to resolve to the 4th Degree - C Major 20:50 - Resolving to E Minor 21:20 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PassingChords #SecondaryDominants #PianoChords
Understand the difference between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16, and learn to count and feel odd meters. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music explores how each of these odd time signatures feels, counts and functions in real music — because 5/4 is not simply the same as 5/8 or 5/16. You'll learn how to count and feel odd meters correctly, use subdivisions, accents and phrasing in 5/4, write riffs and short cycles in 5/8, and apply busy rhythmic textures in 5/16. You'll also compare them to Indian 'five-beat' grooves, use polymetric combinations (like 5/16 with 4/4), and learn to compose and practise effectively in odd meters. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 01:10 - Great 5/4 Songs 03:27 - Distinguishing Between 5/4, 5/8, 5/16 05:04 - How Can 5/4 Be Written? 06:52 - 5/4 Time Signature 07:47 - How Is 5/4 Similar to 4/4? 09:33 - Creating a Composition in 5/4 11:11 - 5/4 Divided into 4 Units 13:46 - Grouping 10/8 16:14 - 5/8 Time Signature 18:38 - 5/4 vs 5/8 22:15 - 5/16 Time Signature 23:08 - 5/16 with Semiquavers 24:24 - Aligning 5/4 & 5/16 25:07 - Getting 5/16 in a 5/4 Context 25:59 - Feeling of 5/8 26:25 - Polymetric Scenario 28:15 - Using 5/4 in Different Ways 29:19 - Understanding 3/8 30:04 - Dividing 3/8 into 3/4 (Dotted Notes) 31:29 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #OddTimeSignatures #TimeSignatures #MusicTheory
