Full lesson: https://youtu.be/w1SwhiI__Mo Every major and minor chord, every inversion — 72 shapes — from one note. Keep D where it is, play the six chords that contain it (bottom, top, middle), then do the same on its tritone, A♭. Not one chord repeats. 36 of the 72 already, and the rest gets exponentially easier. 🌳 Chord Trees — every chord that has your note in it, free: https://chord-trees.nathanielschool.com 🎹 LEARN WITH US — live online lessons, Bangalore centres: https://nathanielschool.com 🛠 25+ free practice tools: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 💛 Support: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal · UPI jasonzac-1@okhdfcbank 📩 WhatsApp https://wa.me/917760456847 · Instagram https://instagram.com/jasonzac #Shorts #PianoChords #ChordInversions #PianoLessons #MusicTheory

Practice all 72 piano chord inversions — every major and minor triad, in every inversion — with one exercise. Piano chord inversions become automatic when you stop drilling them chord by chord and start anchoring one note. Here is the whole idea. There are 12 major chords and 12 minor chords — 24 chords, three positions each, so 72 shapes. Instead of learning them one at a time, take a single note like D and ask which triads contain it. A triad only has a root, a third and a fifth, so the answer is six chords: D is the root of D major and D minor, the fifth of G major and G minor, and the third of Bb major and B minor. Now keep D exactly where it is and play all six chords around it — first with D at the bottom, then on top, then in the middle. The note forces the right inversion on you every time, so you practise chord inversions without ever deciding which inversion to play. That is 18 shapes from one note. Put the roots in the left hand, try a carbon copy in both hands, run it in reverse, and sing the roots for ear training. Then the part that makes the whole thing finish: take the polar opposite of D — its tritone, Ab — and do the same six chords. Not one of them repeats. That is 36 of the 72 already, and from there every new anchor note repeats chords you own, so it gets exponentially faster. A week for the first 36, two days for the rest. This piano inversion practice is for players who know their basic chords but want inversions to feel natural in real music, not as an exercise. 🌳 Chord Trees - the free app I demo at 4:36. Learn how to read music the way working musicians actually do: sight reading, rhythm reading, chord charts, transcription and sight singing, with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music, and why sight singing is the one I'd pick. I started my journey without really knowing how to read. I sang in a choir and figured it out along the way, then played in a cappella groups and rock bands where, for almost a decade, hardly anyone in the band was reading notation. So reading is an option, not a requirement, and it is not the same thing as music theory or ear training. But once you do read, there are five very different things you can do with the page, and most courses only ever teach you one of them. Sight reading is eyes to fingers: you read the page and play it, almost like reading a poem. The honest limit is that you can become a very good reader and still not know what the accidentals mean, where the music modulates, or what tension and resolution are about, because your ears sit the whole thing out. Rhythm reading takes pitch away and has you clap, count or say what is printed; read the son clave once and it is in your body for life. Chord charts are read, interpret, improvise: a Cm7♭5 is an invitation to a ii–V–I or a Locrian line, a C7♭5 points you at Lydian dominant, and the symbol itself should inspire you. Transcription runs the whole process in reverse, from sound to page, and it teaches you things no classroom, course or YouTube video can. And then the one I'd pick: sight singing. Read the notation and sing what you read. You don't have to be a trained singer; what you are training is your mind, your ears, your interval recognition and your compositional ability, and I think the only way to train your ear is to sing. We built a free app for exactly this, with the old Melodia exercises plus my own more rhythmic ones, standard sight singing patterns, a Jazz Lab where you sight sing chord charts, and a score for pitch and timing so you can keep improving. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 🎼 RELATED LESSONS ON THIS CHANNEL How to Read Chord Charts Like a Pro Musician ➡️ https://youtu.be/4qHUtgJ7XoE Learn to Read Sheet Music Fast: Intervals, Clefs & Key Signatures ➡️ https://youtu.be/r5E_FVtw_3A 🎓 Nathaniel School of Music ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons and our live classrooms (Music Factory is our transcription classroom) ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 🎤 The free sight singing app from the lesson ➡️ https://sightsinging.nathanielschool.com 🎷 Jazz Lab, the free chord-chart trainer from 24:13 ➡️ https://jazz.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 - What Does Reading Music Actually Mean? 🎼 00:29 - Clefs: Treble, Bass, Alto & Tenor 00:42 - The X and Y Axis of Notation 01:26 - Two Hands, Two Staves — and the Pipe Organ 02:21 - Why I Started Without Reading 02:38 - Playing in Bands That Never Read Music 03:18 - Reading Is Optional, Not Theory 03:40 - Memorise and Visualise Instead 04:53 - What Sheet Music Is Really For 05:24 - Learning by Watching (Western Grandad) 06:35 - Learning by Intuition (Carnatic Grandad) 🎻 07:20 - Parroting: Learning Songs by Ear 07:40 - The Limits of Copying from YouTube 08:25 - Method 1: Read & Play (Sight-Reading) 🎹 09:06 - Even Drummers Sight-Read 🥁 09:35 - Transposing Instruments: Concert Pitch 10:20 - The Honest Limit of Sight-Reading 11:20 - Method 2: Rhythm Reading 11:40 - Note Durations & Tuplets Explained 12:02 - Clap It, Tap It, Vocalise It 12:22 - The Son Clave Stays With You 12:52 - Method 3: Reading Chord Charts 13:40 - Cm7b5 → Locrian or a 2-5-1 14:07 - Minor Major 7th → Melodic Minor 14:19 - C7b5 → Lydian Dominant 14:33 - A Chord Symbol Is a Scale 14:48 - Maj7 → Lydian, Pentatonic, Harmonic Major 15:33 - Charts in the Studio, Theatre & Jazz 16:28 - Why Chord Charts Aren’t Taught 16:45 - Method 4: Transcription 16:59 - Reverse-Engineering a Song by Ear 17:35 - Steps vs Leaps: Somewhere Over the Rainbow 🌈 18:13 - Shape, Intervals, Notes, Then Notate 20:04 - Beyond Staff: Solfège & Carnatic Swaras 20:46 - Guitar Frets & Instrument-Specific Notation 21:24 - Respecting Every Culture’s Notation 🌍 21:51 - Method 5: Sight-Singing 🎤 22:23 - Why Singing Trains Your Ear Best 22:53 - Practising Intervals from a Root 24:13 - Sight-Singing Chord Charts (Jazz Lab) 💛 Support these free lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp ➡️ +91 7760456847 📩 music@nathanielschool.com #SightSinging #SightReading #ReadingMusic

Ever wondered why some scales sound bright while others sound dark? In this theory lesson, Jason Zac introduces a simple binary framework to organise 16 different scales into just two categories — major-esque and minor-esque — based on a single defining interval: the third. A major-esque scale always contains a major third, while a minor-esque scale always contains a flat (minor) third. From this foundation, we explore eight major-esque scales including the major scale, mixolydian, lydian, lydian dominant, harmonic major, phrygian dominant (double harmonic major), and mixolydian flat 6. Each scale is built on the root A, played with supporting chord voicings, and connected to its emotional character. We then move into eight minor-esque scales: the natural minor, dorian, harmonic minor, jazz melodic minor, plus the more exotic Hungarian minor, Romanian minor, Neapolitan minor, and phrygian. You'll learn how the 6th and 7th degrees create four binary combinations within the traditional minor family, and how exotic scales introduce flat 2 and raised 4 intervals for that Eastern, Spanish, or Middle Eastern flavour. This lesson is especially valuable for composers working with Indian classical ragas, modal music, or any style where the 6th or 7th shifts between ascending and descending lines. Jason also shares ear training drills using sa-re-ga-ma syllables, pendulum-style interval singing, and chord pairings that lock each scale into your ear and fingers.

Train your ear with Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major — sight-singing, chord analysis & arpeggio breakdown in Bobby McFerrin style. 🎼✨ Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C Major is one of the most recognised pieces in classical piano — but what if you sang it instead of played it? In this lesson, Jason Zac takes inspiration from Bobby McFerrin's legendary Ave Maria performance to turn this beloved arpeggio study into the ultimate ear training workout. Rather than just reading and playing the notation, you'll learn to collapse each arpeggiated bar into a stacked chord, identify the harmony (D minor 7, G7, F major 7, and that mysterious diminished voicing nobody can name), and then sing each note back. This trains your intervals, voice leading awareness, register switching, and chord recognition all at once. This approach works for pianists, singers, and any music student who wants to genuinely HEAR what they're playing. We cover sight-singing technique, transcription thinking, harmonic analysis, and how to use Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier as a serious ear training resource — not just a piano study book. Throughout the lesson, Jason demonstrates how to use the piano as a reference, find the lowest or highest note first, name notes as scale degrees (1-2-3-4-5), and gradually move away from the instrument so your voice becomes the piano. You'll also explore voice leading between chords — like how F resolves down to E and E down to E♭ in parallel motion. Learn piano, theory, and ear training through Uptown Funk — D Dorian, 7th chord inversions, voice leading & 4 funky comping patterns. What if you could learn piano, music theory, ear training, AND arranging — all from one song? In this lesson, Jason Zac uses Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars as a vehicle for all four goals at once. The twist? There's no piano in the song. We start by identifying the mode (D Dorian) and the two chords driving the whole track: D minor 7th and G dominant 7th. You'll learn minors in packs of four — Natural, Harmonic, Dorian and Melodic — so you'll instantly recognise the funky minor sound anywhere. Then we get into the piano work: all four inversions of Dm7 and G7, voice leading through common tones, and rhythm patterns including block chords, octave toggling bass, staccato funk articulation, and triplet (tresio) feels. Every shape connects to a usable groove. Next comes the song ingredient breakdown — vocal bass line on a 16th-note grid, Bruno Mars's vocal as the rhythmic engine, plus guitar comping, horn harmonies and the bass guitar. You'll learn to reverse-engineer a stereo file like a DAW, then translate those ingredients into FOUR funky right-hand piano patterns paired with a transcribed bass line. Ready to practise smarter? Learn London Bridge with the melody in your LEFT HAND plus 5 right-hand patterns in E major and E♭ major — piano independence workout. What if the LEFT hand played the melody and the right hand had to comp? In this lesson Jason flips the traditional roles of the two hands and walks you through London Bridge is Falling Down with the melody entirely in the left hand. The right hand isn't chilling out either — you'll work through 5 distinct rhythmic patterns: block fifth chords pumping the pulse, broken chords, a spinning arpeggio figure, a five-finger scalar run, and a syncopated pop groove. Each pattern targets a different layer of hand independence and forces you to hold the melody steady while your right hand stays in motion. We cover the whole workout in two keys — E major and E♭ major — with detailed fingering tips, dotted rhythm corrections, and sargam references for those who think in solfege. The pop groove is the trickiest of the five, so we slow it right down and build it from the ground up. For intermediate players, we then spice up the left-hand melody with 16th-note ornaments, grace notes, trills and small arpeggio fills. We also harmonise the melody by adding an alto voice in thirds underneath the soprano line — with a few moments where a perfect fifth sounds better than a third. If you've ever struggled with hand independence or felt stuck playing melody only in your right hand, this lesson will rewire how you practise. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Piano Syncopated Rhythms: Folk Melody Tutorial - https://youtu.be/6elW86pxMkI 🎯 Hand Independence: Melody & Chord Patterns - https://youtu.be/jy9lF061Aio 🔑 Left Hand Broken Chords Techniques - https://youtu.be/VQtExYO7Xys 💡 Melodic Arpeggios: Accents & Progressions - https://youtu.be/DbL4DJnwIhA 📂 Jazz Lessons - Chords, Standards & Exercises - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ZCriHyNonJasffWWSCS_E ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:30 - 🎹 Intro — Reversing the Roles of the Hands 01:10 - Why Left Hand Melody? 01:32 - Forms of Hand Independence 01:38 - Bass Line + Melody, Bach & Singing While Playing 01:57 - Today’s Approach — Flip It Around 03:16 - Lesson Overview — 5 Right Hand Patterns 05:08 - London Bridge Melody in E Major (Left Hand) 06:08 - ⚠️ Dotted Crotchet Rhythm Warning 06:32 - Sargam Reference: Pa Dha Pa Ma Ga Ma Pa 07:09 - Intermediate Preview — Ornaments & Alto Harmony 07:36 - Pattern 1: Block Fifth Chords (EBE / BEB) 08:23 - Tip: Hum the Melody Before You Play It 08:42 - Both Hands Together — Block Chord + LH Melody 09:04 - Slow-Down Strategy & Half-Note Variation 09:48 - Broken Chords — Slow Breakdown 11:09 - Pattern 3: Arpeggios (Low-Mid-High-Mid) 11:34 - Arpeggio Independence Workout 12:11 - Root Position vs First Inversion Arpeggios 12:49 - Pattern 4: Five-Finger Scalar Run 13:21 - Scalar Run + LH Melody Together 13:45 - Pattern 5: Syncopated Pop Groove 14:16 - Why the Pop Rhythm Is the Trickiest 14:37 - Slow-Down Strategy for the Pop Rhythm 15:21 - 🎼 E♭ Major Section Begins 17:00 - E♭ Block Chords 17:34 - E♭ Broken Chords 17:56 - E♭ Arpeggio — Try the Cello Register 18:23 - E♭ Five-Finger Drill (6th Interval Substitution) 18:41 - E♭ Pop Rhythm — Sing It First 19:41 - Ornaments & Alto Harmony 22:12 - Alto Harmony — Adding a Lower Third 23:54 - Summary — 5 Patterns + 2 Keys 24:35 - 📝 Homework — Try It in Minor! 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +917760456847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HandIndependence #LeftHandMelody #LondonBridge

Master harmony with this incredibly simple trick: play just 1 third interval in the right hand and 12 bass notes in the left to unlock almost every chord you will ever need on the piano. In this lesson, Jason Zac breaks down the theory and shows you how to apply it across all styles. Ever wondered how pro pianists build those rich, jazzy voicings that sound so much more interesting than basic triads? It all comes down to one tiny interval — the third. In this lesson, Jason breaks down a powerful bottom-up harmony approach that will change how you think about chord building forever. Using just two notes (A and C for the minor third, A and C# for the major third) anchored in your right hand, you'll learn how to harmonize them with 12 different bass notes underneath. The result? Triads, slash chords, seventh shells, jazz extensions, diminished and augmented voicings — all from the same two notes on top. We cover specific voicings like F major, Am/E, Dm7, D7sus4, G11, Bbmaj9, Bb minor major 9 (the James Bond chord), F# diminished, B7b9, A7/G Lydian, Eb half-diminished and many more. You'll also learn how to make 'clashing' bass notes actually work by thickening the harmony and using arpeggios instead of block chords. This lesson is perfect for intermediate pianists who want to break out of simple triads, understand jazz harmony, and finally figure out how to voice chords like the pros. Heavy theory content, practical demonstrations, and clear explanations throughout. If you want structured 1-on-1 instruction or our full video course library, links are in the pinned comment. Learn 5 left hand piano patterns across 5 keys using one harmonic concept — explore rock, blues, and folk grooves with Jason Zac. Ever wondered how one simple harmonic idea can sound like five completely different genres? In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through five left hand piano patterns across five different keys — each one shifting the entire vibe of your music. We start with a power chord foundation and build outward using 6ths, 7ths, major and minor intervals. Because the third is left undefined, these voicings work in both major and minor contexts — giving you incredible harmonic flexibility for improvisation. You'll explore patterns in E, G#, Ab, F#, B, and A — moving through rock, blues, folk, and even experimental time signatures like 5/8 and 7/8. Each key gets its own rhythmic pattern with carefully placed accents and gaps that change the entire feel of your playing. A highlight of this lesson is Jason's tip on right hand improvisation: sing your melody first, then play it. This unlocks new rhythmic and melodic ideas that your fingers alone might never discover. We also touch on blues scales, Dorian mode, Mixolydian flavour, and how to mix the third for fresh harmonic colour. Learn C major triad inversions on piano and build smoother chord transitions, better voice leading, and stronger chord connections. In this piano lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down C major triad inversions and shows you how to connect them smoothly to other major and minor chords. If you're stuck always playing chords in root position, this lesson will completely change how you approach piano harmony. We start with the three positions of C major — root, first inversion, and second inversion — and then explore the most important chord connections every pianist needs: C to F, C to G, C to A minor, and beyond. You'll learn why keeping common tones between chords creates smoother voice leading and a more orchestral sound. We also cover movement by thirds, sixths, the tritone, and stepwise motion (seconds and sevenths) — giving you a complete map of how C major can connect to every other major and minor triad. The left hand stays grounded on the root while the right hand explores inversions, training your independence and chord shapes simultaneously. This exercise is perfect for beginners learning chords for the first time, intermediate players breaking out of root-position habits, and even electronic music producers who want to add real musical flavour and dynamics to their productions. Inversions aren't an advanced topic — they're foundational. If you'd like a structured path through notes, intervals, chords, and inversions, check out the courses at Nathaniel School of Music linked in the description. Learn old-school ear training by singing intervals first and checking on piano. Build real relative pitch across major, minor & modal scales. Most musicians practise ear training the wrong way — by playing along with the piano or guitar while singing. That's mimicking, not hearing. In this lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shares the old-school approach: sing the note FIRST, then play your instrument only to check the answer. We begin by getting Sa wired into your system using a G drone or tanpura, then work through the full major scale using Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni). You can also use movable-DO solfège or simple syllables like la-la or na-na — whatever keeps your brain untangled. From there we expand into Mixolydian, Dorian, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor — each built by altering just a few intervals from the major scale. You'll practise singing close intervals first (Sa-Re-Sa), then widen the gap step by step (Sa-Ga-Sa, Sa-Ma-Sa, Sa-Pa-Sa) both above and below the tonic. This builds true relative pitch — the ability to hear how one note relates to another, the foundation of every melody. This isn't just an ear training drill. It's a 3D workout combining ear, theory and technique — because if you sing the right note but press the wrong key, you've still got work to do. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and try the exercise in different keys (find your preferred vocal key!). Once the order is comfortable, jumble the intervals to make it more musical and creative. Learn ear training by playing incomplete chords and singing the missing notes, using triads and seventh chords to improve your musical ear. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music develops your ear through active singing: you play incomplete chords on the piano while singing the missing notes — a technique that builds deeper harmonic understanding than traditional chord identification. You'll start with basic major triads, removing one note at a time (root, third or fifth) while your voice supplies the missing tone. The lesson progresses from simple diatonic exercises to harder progressions like the 1-5-6-4 sequence, forcing your ear to work harder and develop faster. It then advances to seventh-chord ear training using 2-5-1 progressions — essential for jazz and contemporary music — where you sing missing sevenths, roots, thirds and fifths while playing the remaining tones. Perfect for intermediate students ready to move beyond basic chord recognition toward the internal hearing needed for improvisation and composition. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Perfromance 00:23 - Introduction: Singing & Playing Demo 🎵 01:10 - Why Singing Beats Just Identification 01:30 - What Are Missing Notes? 02:02 - Indian Note Names: Sa, Gha, Pa, Ni 02:56 - Exercise 1: A Major Chord Setup 03:21 - Singing the Missing Root Note 🎶 03:38 - Diatonic Scale Practice Method 04:54 - Playing Root Notes in Lower Octave 05:10 - Checking Your Pitch Accuracy 05:54 - Exercise 2: Missing Third Notes 06:02 - Why Thirds Are Trickier to Hear 06:16 - Linear vs Random Chord Practice 07:43 - Exercise 3: Singing the Fifth 08:13 - Tritone vs Perfect Fifth Challenge 08:30 - Chord Progression Challenge: 1-5-6-4 08:48 - Missing Roots in Progression 09:07 - Missing Thirds in Progression 09:25 - Missing Fifths in Progression 09:59 - Seventh Chord Introduction 🎼 10:15 - D Major 7th Missing Note Demo 10:33 - 2-5-1 Progression Setup 10:46 - B Minor 7th - E Dom 7th - A Maj 7th 10:53 - Singing Missing Sevenths 11:04 - Singing Missing Roots in 7th Chords 11:12 - Piano Technique: Playing Incomplete Chords 11:52 - Different Keys Practice Suggestion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #EarTraining #SingingTriads #ChordEarTraining

Learn to harmonize piano and voice using thirds in G harmonic minor. Build musicianship with tenor and alto harmony exercises. Learn the art of piano and voice harmony with this comprehensive lesson on coordinating melody and harmony between two instruments. You'll discover how to play piano melody while singing harmonic thirds, just like legendary groups such as The Beatles, ABBA, and Queen. This lesson focuses on G harmonic minor scale harmonization using tenor and alto thirds. You'll learn the difference between upper thirds (tenor) and lower thirds (alto), understanding why tenor harmony is traditionally played an octave below the soprano melody for optimal sound quality. Practice exercises include ascending and descending scale harmonization, where your right hand plays the melody while your voice sings the corresponding third intervals. The lesson covers both major and minor thirds within the harmonic minor structure, helping you develop crucial ear training and coordination skills. Advanced musicians will appreciate the theoretical foundation covering heptatonic scale harmonization and the practical application of these concepts in performance settings. This technique builds overall musicianship and prepares you for more complex vocal and instrumental arrangements. Are your piano transitions clunky? Do your hands feel tense when playing chords? In this tutorial, Jason Zac reveals the 6 most common chord playing mistakes piano students make—from incorrect thumb alignment to lazy wrist motion—and gives you simple physical fixes to play smoothly. Learn the 6 essential techniques that separate smooth chord players from struggling beginners in this focused piano tutorial. If your chords sound clunky, have awkward gaps, or cause hand pain, these methods will transform your playing. We'll work through a B♭-Dm-E♭-F progression that combines white and black keys, giving you real practice with proper thumb positioning for black notes, wrist motion that prevents strain, and gap-free chord transitions. You'll discover why curving your thumb like a "thumbs up" prevents your whole body from shifting, and how using your wrist as a snapping tool gives you control and prevents pain. The lesson covers both mechanical techniques (posture, finger positioning, wrist motion) and musical concepts (using your ear to catch mistakes, thinking ahead to the next chord shape, understanding the roles of both hands in accompaniment). These aren't just theory concepts - they're practical skills that make chords feel effortless and sound professional. Learn to play smooth chord progressions with inversions. Practice D-F#m-G-A with proper voice leading, timing, and accompaniment techniques. Learn to play smooth, professional-sounding chord progressions with this essential piano tutorial. We'll work through the popular D-F#m-G-A progression (1-3-4-5) that appears in countless songs. This lesson focuses on chord inversions and voice leading - the secret to making your chord changes sound seamless instead of choppy. You'll practice finding common tones between chords and learn three different starting positions: root position, first inversion, and second inversion. We cover essential accompaniment techniques including proper timing (playing each chord for 2 or 4 beats), articulation patterns (three staccatos and one legato), and how to maintain steady time while singing. You'll also learn when to use the sustain pedal effectively. Perfect for beginner to intermediate pianists who want to accompany singers, play in bands, or simply make their chord progressions sound more musical. By the end, you'll understand how to make any four-chord progression flow naturally. Ready for structured piano lessons? Nail all 24 major and minor chords with this chromatic second-inversion piano exercise. Learn voice leading, block chords, arpeggios, smooth chord progressions, and how to practise every major and minor triad across the keyboard. Learn to practise all 12 major and 12 minor chords in second inversion using chromatic voice-leading patterns, block chords and arpeggios. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the power of second-inversion triads with a chromatic exercise that covers all 12 major and 12 minor chords, focusing on voice leading that creates smooth, musical progressions. You'll discover why second inversions are so effective for voice leading — with the root in the middle of the chord, you create harmonic movements that sound more sophisticated than root-position progressions. You'll learn to identify major and minor thirds quickly by asking questions like 'C is the major third of which triad?' You'll practise multiple patterns including block chords, high-low-middle-low arpeggios and reinforced-melody techniques. Each chromatic step reveals two chords — one major and one minor — creating 24 total progressions that flow beautifully together while sharpening your ear. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:54 - Introduction to Second Inversion Triads 🎹 01:09 - Why Choose Second Inversion for Voice Leading 01:26 - Understanding Root Position vs Inversions 01:49 - The Chromatic Climbing Exercise Overview 02:17 - Major vs Minor Third Identification 03:24 - Starting with C: Ab Major and A Minor 05:23 - Block Chord Practice Pattern 05:39 - High-Low-Middle-Low Arpeggio Pattern 🎵 05:56 - Reinforcing the Melody Note Technique 06:51 - C# Progression: A Major to Bb Minor 07:49 - Left Hand with Chord Roots 08:24 - D Progression: Bb Major to B Minor 08:47 - D# Progression: B Major to C Minor 09:56 - E Progression: C Major to C# Minor 10:19 - F Progression: Db Major to D Minor 11:17 - F# Progression: D Major to Eb Minor 11:36 - G Progression: Eb Major to E Minor 11:49 - G# Progression: E Major to F Minor 12:04 - A Progression: F Major to F# Minor 13:19 - A# Progression: F# Major to G Minor 13:34 - B Progression: G Major to G# Minor 14:10 - Completing the Chromatic Circle 14:35 - Left Hand Root Movement Practice 16:12 - Ear Training with Major/Minor Thirds 16:23 - Chord Trees Composition Concept 🌳 16:41 - Practice Tips for All Skill Levels ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordInversions #PianoTriads #VoiceLeading

Learn interval inversions and reverse ear training to improve your piano playing, composition and musical hearing. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music reveals an approach to ear training most teachers never cover — interval inversions — showing you how to hear and practise intervals in both ascending and descending directions. You'll learn the Rule of 9, where major thirds become minor sixths, perfect fourths transform into perfect fifths, and the tritone stays unchanged when inverted. You'll work through every interval chromatically from unison to octave, hearing exactly how each inversion sounds and feels. The lesson goes beyond basic ear training with practical applications for technique, composition and arrangement, so you break free from only practising upward motion and develop fluency above and below any root. Perfect for intermediate pianists, it includes chromatic exercises, diatonic work in F minor and random interval practice. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:33 - 🎹 Introduction & Lesson Overview 00:48 - 📱 Required Tools: Tuners and Apps 01:14 - Close vs Open (Spread Intervals) 02:06 - Lesson Applications 02:23 - Step & Leap Motion 03:26 - 🎵 What Are Reverse Intervals? 03:41 - 🎼 D♭ Major Scale Breakdown 04:50 - ⬆️ Major Third to Minor Sixth 05:40 - 📚 Major vs Minor Interval Flipping 06:10 - 🔄 Singing Interval Inversion 06:24 - 2️⃣ Second to Seventh Inversions 06:59 - 🎯 Unison and Octave Practice 07:15 - 🎤 Vocal Range Considerations 08:10 - 4️⃣ Perfect Fourth & Fifth Inversions 08:31 - 3️⃣ Third to Sixth Inversions 09:33 - Revision of all the Intervals 10:52 - 🎶 C Major Chromatic Exercise 11:19 - 🎵 Minor Second Practice 12:34 - 📈 Major Second to Minor Seventh 13:40 - 🎼 Minor Third Exercises 14:32 - Sing the Intervals for better practice 14:48 - Working with the Tuner 15:23 - Octave switching with the Voice 15:43 - 👹 The Tritone Exception 18:00 - 🎹 F Minor Diatonic Practice 20:53 - 👂 Piano + Vocal Training 21:56 - Singing after the Piano 22:50 - Close vs Wide Interval 23:25 - 🎲 Random Note Practice 24:16 - 🎯 Priority Learning Order 24:43 - 🎹 Piano Technique Applications 25:20 - 🎼 Composition & Arrangement Uses 26:19 - 🎤 Vocal Training Tips 27:00 - 📝 Homework & Next Steps ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #IntervalInversion #EarTraining #Intervals

Learn essential piano note recognition beyond memorisation — master intervals, chord progressions and practice techniques. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music reveals how understanding note relationships and intervals creates the foundation for advanced playing, going far beyond simple memorisation. You'll learn the complete system: starting with individual notes, progressing through intervals (minor thirds, perfect fifths, tritones), and building toward chord progressions. You'll discover how each note connects to others — like how Eb relates to A as a tritone, or how Bb to Eb forms a perfect fourth while Eb to Bb creates a perfect fifth. You'll also explore a Musical Note Generator practice tool with four modes — Beginner (random notes), Intermediate (interval training), Chord Progressions and Circle Patterns — each with tempo control and theory integration. Learn to Transpose Any Song in “Real-Time”: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (Christmas Carol) | Piano Theory Transpose It Came Upon a Midnight Clear to all 12 keys using intervals, ear training & theory 🎄 Explore Our Complete Christmas Collection - Visit our Christmas website where all tutorials are organized by skill level and genre for easy navigation. 🎹 Join Our Christmas Workshops This Season - We're running special workshops focused on ear training, music theory, transcription, and Christmas repertoire. Perfect for students and teachers who want to elevate their musicality during the holiday season. 🎓 Ready for Structured Learning in the New Year? - If you want to build a comprehensive music education tailored to your skill level, consider enrolling in a semester-based course at Nathaniel School of Music. In this comprehensive piano tutorial, learn how to transpose "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"—and really, any song—to all 12 keys without relying on sheet music or chord charts. The key to successful transposition is understanding three things: intervals (, chord function , and how each chord relates to the previous one. When you internalize these concepts, you can transpose in real-time at the piano without rewriting anything. We break down the entire piece systematically: The AABA song structure The secondary dominants (V/V progressions) that add harmonic color. The beautiful modulation to the relative minor in the B section, featuring melodic minor flavors with that characteristic raised 6th and 7th. But here's what makes this truly special: every key feels different and inspires different ideas. A♭ major might sound sophisticated and hymn-like. C major feels bright and folk-inspired. E♭ major might swing naturally. A major could sound laid-back. The piano itself guides you—when you don't know a scale perfectly, you discover survival chords like diminished sevenths, you create your own passing harmonies, and you develop unique voicings that wouldn't happen if everything were pre-written. We also explore practical voicing options: 6/9 chords on the tonic, slash chords (like IV/I), proper alto and tenor voice leading for that choral cadence feeling (sus4 resolving to 3, and 6 resolving to 5), and how to color your harmonies with 9ths, 13ths, and major 7ths. You'll learn how to identify scales and modes based on simple two-chord progressions like V–I (authentic) and IV–I (plagal). We'll also see how combinations like major to major, major to minor, minor to major and minor to minor create unique sounds: Major to Major gives the Ionian (Major scale), Major to Minor a Harmonic Minor feel, Minor to Major the Mixolydian, and Minor to Minor the Aeolian (Natural Minor). Finally, we'll apply this to real piano practice with inversions, smooth transitions, and a creative way to harmonize any scale. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:32 - Cadences & Circle of Fifths 01:32 - Revision of the Circle of Fifths 01:49 - Perfect 5th Galore 02:13 - Perfect 4th motion 02:41 - Cadences 04:06 - Plagal Cadence 05:19 - Binary Perspective - Major & Minor Triads 05:54 - V to I - Major Scale 06:58 - V to i - Harmonic Minor 08:10 - Highlighting the Scale 08:38 - Other scales wrt this Cadence 09:14 - v to I - Mixolydian 10:07 - v to i - Natural Minor 11:17 - Plagal Cadence - 4 to 1 12:26 - Major to Minor - Dorian 13:13 - iv - I (Charukeshi) - Mixolydian b6 14:07 - Minor to Minor 14:46 - Aeolian vs Harmonic Minor 16:05 - Think and Play 16:38 - Practice Goals ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoScales #Cadences #CircleOfFifths

Learn to practise major and minor thirds on piano using the whole tone and diminished scales. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music focuses on major and minor thirds and how to practise them across all 12 notes. Using the whole tone scale and the half-whole diminished scale, you'll cover every third efficiently while building strong finger technique. You'll also discover how augmented triads and diminished seventh chords naturally group intervals together, making them far easier to visualise and practise. It's a clear, systematic way to master thirds and strengthen both your ear and your fingers. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:40 - Intervals with all 12 Notes 01:49 - The Whole Tone Scale 02:43 - Pinky & Thumb for Both Hands 03:12 - Inversions of each other 03:39 - inversions of Each Other 05:07 - Finishing off the remaining 6 05:45 - Ab Whole Tone in Thirds 06:22 - Family of Augmented Triads 09:37 - 4 Equilateral Triangles 10:12 - Half Whole Diminished Scale 11:35 - The Intervals contained within 12:38 - Half-Whole are inversions of each other 13:39 - Diminished 7th Chord Families 15:38 - Revision ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #MajorAndMinorThirds #WholeToneScale #DiminishedScale
