Learn 3 go-to left-hand piano rhythm patterns — umpah, arpeggio and power chords — that work across ballads, rock and pop genres. 🎼 Is your left hand the weakest part of your playing? In this piano tutorial, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down three go-to left-hand rhythm patterns that hold their ground across ballads, old-school pop, rock and heavier music. We start with the umpah (or accordion) pattern — taking a chord like D minor and moving between the root and fifth. You'll learn the crucial staccato-legato articulation, how to modify it for beat three and four, and how to shift the bass for a more modern feel. Next up are arpeggios, one of the most useful accompaniment techniques for a huge variety of music. Jason demonstrates the basic four-note shape, how to add octaves for a more advanced sound, and why dynamic swells and volume control are essential. You'll also see how to handle seventh chords and slash chords like C over E. The final pattern is the power chord — root, fifth and octave played powerfully in the left-hand zone. From four-on-the-floor to driving eighth-note accents and snare-hit patterns on beats two and four, these ideas will fuel any rock song. We also touch on floating fifths and breaking up the pattern for variation. Throughout the lesson you'll pick up practical advice on transposing these patterns into any key, using proper wrist and forearm technique to play fast without pain, and trusting your left hand so you can focus on the music. This lesson is aimed at beginner-intermediate players and upward. Learn 5 left hand piano patterns across 5 keys using one harmonic concept — explore rock, blues, and folk grooves with Jason Zac. Ever wondered how one simple harmonic idea can sound like five completely different genres? In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through five left hand piano patterns across five different keys — each one shifting the entire vibe of your music. We start with a power chord foundation and build outward using 6ths, 7ths, major and minor intervals. Because the third is left undefined, these voicings work in both major and minor contexts — giving you incredible harmonic flexibility for improvisation. You'll explore patterns in E, G#, Ab, F#, B, and A — moving through rock, blues, folk, and even experimental time signatures like 5/8 and 7/8. Each key gets its own rhythmic pattern with carefully placed accents and gaps that change the entire feel of your playing. A highlight of this lesson is Jason's tip on right hand improvisation: sing your melody first, then play it. This unlocks new rhythmic and melodic ideas that your fingers alone might never discover. We also touch on blues scales, Dorian mode, Mixolydian flavour, and how to mix the third for fresh harmonic colour. Learn quintal voicings on piano — a colourful left hand technique using stacked perfect fifths to replace boring 1-5 octave drones. Tired of your left hand sounding muddy, thin, or stuck on a boring 1-5 octave drone? In this piano lesson, Jason Zac breaks down the quintal voicing — a beautiful left hand technique built from two stacked perfect fifths that adds instant colour to any chord. We focus on two specific voicings: F#add9 and Ebm9. You'll learn why these voicings sound rich in the lower register of the piano, how to play them as block chords or broken arpeggios, and three different rhythmic patterns to apply them — including 4/4 and 3/4 time feels, plus a syncopated pattern that leaves space for the snare drum. Once the left hand is solid, we shift to building a right hand melody using chord tones (3-2-3-5-3-2-1). This is a powerful compositional approach because every note is guaranteed to fit the harmony. Jason then shows you how to ornament the tune with grace notes and reverse grace notes, and how to develop independence between the hands by practising in fragments. The lesson wraps up with a complimenting counter melody and an AABA / AABB structure you can use to extend your ideas into a full piece. We also touch on improvisation, time signature variations (5/8, 7/8), and how the F# pentatonic scale lets you improvise on the black keys alone. Perfect for intermediate pianists working on accompaniment, film scoring, or contemporary piano composition. Are your piano transitions clunky? Do your hands feel tense when playing chords? In this tutorial, Jason Zac reveals the 6 most common chord playing mistakes piano students make—from incorrect thumb alignment to lazy wrist motion—and gives you simple physical fixes to play smoothly. Learn the 6 essential techniques that separate smooth chord players from struggling beginners in this focused piano tutorial. If your chords sound clunky, have awkward gaps, or cause hand pain, these methods will transform your playing. We'll work through a B♭-Dm-E♭-F progression that combines white and black keys, giving you real practice with proper thumb positioning for black notes, wrist motion that prevents strain, and gap-free chord transitions. You'll discover why curving your thumb like a "thumbs up" prevents your whole body from shifting, and how using your wrist as a snapping tool gives you control and prevents pain. The lesson covers both mechanical techniques (posture, finger positioning, wrist motion) and musical concepts (using your ear to catch mistakes, thinking ahead to the next chord shape, understanding the roles of both hands in accompaniment). These aren't just theory concepts - they're practical skills that make chords feel effortless and sound professional. Perfect for intermediate students who know their chord shapes but want to play them smoothly, confidently, and without strain. By the end, you'll understand why block chords are the foundation for all chord playing and have the techniques to practice any chord progression effectively. 🎹 Subscribe for more piano tutorials and turn on notifications! Learn piano accompaniment using arpeggios in straight, swing, and triplet time feels. Perfect for backing tracks and band playing. While solo arrangements focus on melody in the right hand with chords in the left, accompaniment puts rhythm and harmony in the right hand with bass notes in the left. This approach gives you more versatility for real-world playing situations. We'll work through straight time, swing feel, and triplet patterns using the same chord progressions in both Bb major (two flats) and D major (two sharps). This lesson helps beginners navigate difficult chord progressions and improve piano accompaniment skills using just major and minor thirds. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to use just major and minor 3rds in the right hand, floating the left-hand bass with single notes, to build almost every triad, seventh chord and even some complex jazz voicings. By pivoting the thirds against a moving bass, you can voice rich harmony with very little hand movement — making tricky progressions far more manageable. It's a beginner-friendly approach that instantly improves your accompaniment. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:47 - Introduction 03:30 - Build Major 3rd from D 04:29 - Building from D to F♯ 04:53 - Let’s Look at the Chord Tones 06:15 - Changing vibe of D Major 07:15 - Make the Chord Progression Longer 07:56 - Lets look at other Bass Notes 10:55 - Use it in Passing Context 11:38 - ⚠️ Playing Chord which are not part of the D Maj Scale 13:22 - Lets Study the Min 3rd 16:11 - Using the C♯ Scale 16:51 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordVoicings #PianoChords #PianoAccompaniment

In the final chapter of our 3-part series, we learn how you can embellish a chord progression with passing bass notes between the chords, building a walking bass line in the left hand. In this 3-part series, we learn a variety of methods to play ballad-style piano accompaniment. The right hand uses predominantly 3 patterns (block chords, broken chords and arpeggios) while the left hand develops root-octave combo patterns, ghost notes and a walking bass line. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:37 - Introduction to part 3 02:03 - Intro to walking bass line 02:45 - How chords are played by different instruments 05:53 - Pattern of Walking bass 𝄢 07:44 - Improvising the same pattern using 5ths 08:03 - Advanced pattern 09:37 - Recap 09:57 - 8th note ghosts 11:03 - Walking Bass in different Scales 12:19 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoAccompaniment #WalkingBass #BalladPiano Continue this lesson series Part 1: ballad chords, broken chords and arpeggios — https://youtu.be/XTxBoGf7LP0 Part 2: ballad ghost notes and subdivisions — https://youtu.be/Jl4BmotXk3M

Ghost notes are what give ballad accompaniment its quiet forward motion — in Part 2 of this series you'll learn how to play them in the left hand across many time divisions to propel the rhythm. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches what ghost notes are and how to use them under a progression — counting eighth notes, choosing ghost-note placements, handling diminished and augmented chords, and combining them with 5ths and 3rds. You'll learn to play slash chords in the left hand (3rds and 5ths in the bass), swing them, and move through triplet ballad feels, Tresillo, 16th notes and arpeggios. This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on ballad accompaniment; the right hand carries block chords, broken chords and arpeggios while the left hand brings the rhythm to life. Learn to accompany almost any ballad on piano using block chords, broken chords and arpeggios over a Radiohead 'Creep'-inspired progression. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches the progression on three keys - G, F and D major - and shows how chord inversions and extended harmony keep the changes smooth. The right hand develops three core patterns (block chords, broken chords and arpeggios) while the left hand builds root-octave combos, ghost notes and a walking bass line. One left-hand pattern can make almost any melody sound like a folk or pop song — in this lesson you'll learn a diad-based pattern that floats around a single major chord and works across countless tunes. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music keeps a constant root and fifth on top while floating the lower register with diatonic diads in D Major. You'll apply it to "Twinkle", "Three Blind Mice", "Jingle Bells", "Country Roads", "Amazing Grace", "Annie's Song" and more — improvising with diads, adding floating thirds for density, and even taking it into triplets, 6/8 and odd meters with drum grooves. By the end you'll have a flexible accompaniment pattern that turns the piano into a chameleon — ready for folk, pop and beyond. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🫲 Left Hand Exercises (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT8z7g-GEvODdNziji2edzVX 🪕 Folk Arpeggios ➡️ https://youtu.be/eW82Ttuv52E 🧜🏾 Folk Music Accompaniment ➡️ https://youtu.be/ps86lNUCpeg ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 01:42 Folk Music Cultures 02:21 Preparing for the Lesson 02:54 D Major Theory 03:26 Developing our Practice 04:23 The Easy LH Pattern 05:01 The Best Song Ever Written - "Twinkle" 05:42 Three Blind Mice, Jingle Bells & More 06:30 Usage of Diads 07:48 Improvising with Diads 08:37 Pattern 2 09:16 Improv with Pattern 2 11:28 Making it Harmonically Dense 12:11 Floating Thirds 13:34 The Exercise to Float the Low-End Thirds 14:41 Time for Country Roads 15:42 Raghuvamsa Sudha 16:26 Posture Advice for the Left Hand 17:05 Capping Things Off with Drum Grooves 18:02 Triplets & 6/8 with Amazing Grace 18:47 Annie's Song 19:42 Odd Meters / Time Signatures 20:09 Piano - The Chameleon 21:19 What to Listen To 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #LeftHandPiano #FolkPiano #PopPiano

Make your piano sound like a strumming guitarist using syncopated block chords, off-beat hits and ghost notes. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music starts from a popular guitar rhythm pattern and develops numerous piano variations over a simple D–Bm–G–D progression, using inversions and alternating 'off' beats. You'll add left-hand ghost notes, a 3+5 beat-division feel, a gliding grace-note technique and even a 'ghost drummer' groove with country-style fillers - everything you need to fake a full band from one piano. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:38 Emulating the Guitarist 01:53 Chord Progression on D Major 03:50 Duration of each chord 04:15 Usage of Inversions 06:07 Alternating “Off” Beat Hits 07:44 The “Snapping” Challenge 09:52 LH Ghost Note 👻 10:27 3 + 5 with Beat Division➗ 12:23 Gliding (Grace Note) Technique 13:48 The “Ghost” Drummer 🥁 16:25 Sneaking in the Drum Groove 18:08 Country Style Fillers 22:22 Conclusion 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎹 Accompaniment Tutorials (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_zdfpeK-q61q6qLtqdXLMk 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoAccompaniment #BlockChords #GhostNotes

A flowing left-hand arpeggio is what makes a ballad sound full and emotional — in this lesson you'll build 5 left-hand patterns over a long progression and pair each one with a singing melody. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music uses a rather long chord progression with a traditional "ballad style" melody to develop a variety of left-hand arpeggio patterns. With simple displacement and voicing tricks, each pattern gets its own character — then you layer the melody on top of all five, including a 16th-note arpeggio variation. The result is a left hand that carries the harmony and momentum on its own, freeing your right hand to sing — the heart of beautiful solo-piano ballad playing. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎶 All our Arpeggios lessons (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 🙌🏼 All our Hand Independence Exercises (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 🖖🏽 The All-in-One Finger Exercise ➡️ https://youtu.be/OB8c3TZU8kM ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:47 Introduction 01:52 Scale for the Exercise 03:13 Chords 07:50 Arpeggio Pattern 1 08:58 Arpeggio Pattern 2 10:14 Arpeggio Pattern 3 11:28 Arpeggio Pattern 4 12:54 Arpeggio Pattern 5 14:59 Melody 17:16 Melody + Pattern 1 19:48 Melody + Pattern 2 22:35 16th Notes Arpeggio 23:28 Melody + Pattern 3 25:26 Melody + Pattern 4 28:58 Melody + Pattern 5 32:35 Summary 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #LeftHandPiano #PianoArpeggios #BalladPiano
