How to end a song on piano: the long cadence is a five-chord ending — G, D/F♯, E7, A7sus4 and D — played under one held D, six beats round. Use it as the last bar of almost any song in D, and see three cadences hiding in it: plagal, perfect and secondary dominant. 🔓 Want to play this in every key, at your own speed? You start by hearing it, then build it. The right hand plays B, A, G♯, G, F♯ — that is 6, 5, ♯4, 4, 3 in D major — and the left hand follows underneath in thirds. Then the D on top comes in as eighth notes, and the chords appear by themselves: G, D over F♯, E7, A7sus4, back home to D. Then the theory. G is the subdominant, D/F♯ is an inverted tonic, E7 is a secondary dominant (a dominant chord from outside the key that resolves to its fifth) and A7sus4 pulls magnetically home. You hear plagal (IV–I), perfect or authentic (V–I) and the secondary dominant in one cycle, and why the held D is a different note in every chord: the 5th, the root, the ♭7, the sus4, the root again. You also sing the top line and the bass, which turns it into an ear-training exercise as well. Then the fun: anticipation, swing, bass movement, a trill, the left hand keeping the pulse, a blues-scale lick to fill the bar (with no pedal), the same exercise in D♭ major, and a small Bohemian Rhapsody twist with G♯°7 and Em7. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ▶ Related lessons • The Plagal Cadence on Piano: The 'Amen' Move That Adds Instant Emotion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioscYupDYko • Beyond V–I: 8 Piano Cadences That Change How Music Ends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Zdkdxd_HY • How to Use Secondary Dominant Chords to Write Colorful Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do-FwFW2Eag • Slash Chords on Piano: Turn Plain Triads Into Moving Progressions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjkwbSe5Xuc • Blues Scale Piano Workout: Major & Minor Blues Scales: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p46g4HXjtj0 • Free practice apps: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 🎓 https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 - The Long Cadence — play it first 00:27 - Welcome — what’s in this lesson 01:54 - An ending for any song 02:21 - Three cadences in one cycle 02:45 - One note that never moves: D 03:18 - Right hand: B A G♯ G F♯ 03:47 - Left hand: thirds underneath 04:44 - Ear training: sing the top and the bass 05:55 - Add the D on top — eighth notes in 6 06:55 - The D in the left hand too 07:16 - Name the chords: G · D/F♯ · E7 · A7sus4 · D 07:58 - What each chord does 09:18 - Tension and resolution 09:30 - The D plays a different role in every chord 09:58 - Basic rhythm done — now have fun 10:13 - Don’t play the D too loudly 10:52 - Bass movement and swing 11:17 - Anticipation: 1 e & a 11:53 - Left hand keeps the pulse 12:58 - Add a trill 14:15 - Bass walk: F♯ G G♯ A in thirds 15:26 - Sixteenth-note feel 15:54 - The D on top — thicken it up 16:27 - More options: the ♭7, plain diatonic 17:13 - Left hand follows like a hawk 17:54 - Your spice — or the old faithful 18:07 - All 12 keys — try D♭ major 19:21 - Fill the bar: D major blues licks 21:19 - No pedal on the licks 21:42 - The Bohemian Rhapsody twist 22:21 - Practice app · subscribe · see you next time 💛 PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp: +91 77604 56847 📧 music@nathanielschool.com #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoCadence

Shell voicings are the two notes that actually describe a chord — the 3rd and the 7th — and in this jazz piano tutorial we run them through one long 2-5-1 chord progression until every 7th chord type and its tritone substitute is under your hands. The right hand plays two notes and nothing else. The left hand takes the root and the fifth. That split is how most working pianists actually voice a 7th chord, and it leaves your right hand free to improvise. The progression is deliberately long: Am7, D7, Gmaj7, Cmaj7, F#m7b5, B7, Em7, E7 — a major 2-5-1 running straight into the relative minor's 2-5-1, then a secondary dominant to send you round again. Every chord falls a fifth, so one finger stays put and the other steps down a semitone or a tone. Play it twice and you will have played both arrangements of all eight chords — the complete shell vocabulary of the key — because the hand keeps descending into the other shape by itself. Then we add the things that make it music: singing the roots, the chord names and the shells; five rhythms including the Charleston and its displaced cousin; and tritone substitution, where the same right-hand shape serves two different dominants because the 7th of one is the 3rd of the other. 📘 STUDY GUIDE + PRACTICE APP The Companion has the whole exercise notated, the crown-note table, the five rhythm grids and a practice log for all twelve keys. The practice app plays it back at any tempo with a metronome, in every key, with the regular dominants or the tritone substitutions. 🎹 LEARN WITH US Live online lessons, Bangalore centres and the Everything For Life bundle: https://nathanielschool.com Piano, guitar or vocals, any level — message us on WhatsApp and our course advisor will get back to you: https://wa.me/917760456847 🛠 FREE PRACTICE TOOLS The Jazz Harmony Lab — major and minor ii–V–I, dominant cycles and altered voicings, free in the browser: https://jazz.nathanielschool.com Master Key — the diminished seventh laboratory, for dominant 7ths and tritone substitution: https://masterkey.nathanielschool.com Groove Metronome — for the Charleston and the five rhythms in this lesson: https://metronome.nathanielschool.com 25+ free browser tools for rhythm, chords, inversions, notation and ear training: https://apps.nathanielschool.com ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 Performance 00:10 The Eight-Chord Practice Progression 00:56 G Major and E Minor Key Signature 02:44 Right-Hand Shells and Left-Hand Support 04:17 Building an Am7 Open Voicing 04:38 Building a D7 Open Voicing 05:58 Connecting Am7 to D7 06:20 Circle-of-Fifths Voice Leading 06:50 Major ii–V–I: Am7–D7–Gmaj7 09:08 Minor ii–V–i in E Minor 09:34 Lap 2: Switching to 7–3 Shapes 10:10 E7 as a Secondary Dominant 11:02 Lap 1: Descending 3–7 Shapes 11:39 Singing Chord Names and Chord Tones 12:39 Singing the Right-Hand Shells 13:03 Singing the Chord Roots 🎧 13:42 Writing and Visualising Inversions 14:09 One-Finger Common-Tone Exercise 15:49 Rhythm 1: Blocks and Alternating Fifths 16:07 Rhythm 2: Cascading the Chord Tones 17:06 Rhythm 3: Salsa-Like Syncopation 18:46 Charleston Rhythm Pattern 19:03 Swinging the Shell Voicings 20:17 Broken-Chord Ensemble Rhythm 21:56 Tritone Substitution Explained 24:50 Final Practice Plan 💛 SUPPORT THESE FREE LESSONS PayPal: https://paypal.me/jasonzac?locale.x=en_GB&country.x=IN UPI: jasonzac-1@okhdfcbank (Jason Zac) 📩 TALK TO US WhatsApp: https://wa.me/917760456847 Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac · https://instagram.com/nathanielschool #ShellVoicings #TritoneSubstitution #JazzPiano

Learn how to read music the way working musicians actually do: sight reading, rhythm reading, chord charts, transcription and sight singing, with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music, and why sight singing is the one I'd pick. I started my journey without really knowing how to read. I sang in a choir and figured it out along the way, then played in a cappella groups and rock bands where, for almost a decade, hardly anyone in the band was reading notation. So reading is an option, not a requirement, and it is not the same thing as music theory or ear training. But once you do read, there are five very different things you can do with the page, and most courses only ever teach you one of them. Sight reading is eyes to fingers: you read the page and play it, almost like reading a poem. The honest limit is that you can become a very good reader and still not know what the accidentals mean, where the music modulates, or what tension and resolution are about, because your ears sit the whole thing out. Rhythm reading takes pitch away and has you clap, count or say what is printed; read the son clave once and it is in your body for life. Chord charts are read, interpret, improvise: a Cm7♭5 is an invitation to a ii–V–I or a Locrian line, a C7♭5 points you at Lydian dominant, and the symbol itself should inspire you. Transcription runs the whole process in reverse, from sound to page, and it teaches you things no classroom, course or YouTube video can. And then the one I'd pick: sight singing. Read the notation and sing what you read. You don't have to be a trained singer; what you are training is your mind, your ears, your interval recognition and your compositional ability, and I think the only way to train your ear is to sing. We built a free app for exactly this, with the old Melodia exercises plus my own more rhythmic ones, standard sight singing patterns, a Jazz Lab where you sight sing chord charts, and a score for pitch and timing so you can keep improving. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 🎼 RELATED LESSONS ON THIS CHANNEL How to Read Chord Charts Like a Pro Musician ➡️ https://youtu.be/4qHUtgJ7XoE Learn to Read Sheet Music Fast: Intervals, Clefs & Key Signatures ➡️ https://youtu.be/r5E_FVtw_3A 🎓 Nathaniel School of Music ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons and our live classrooms (Music Factory is our transcription classroom) ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 🎤 The free sight singing app from the lesson ➡️ https://sightsinging.nathanielschool.com 🎷 Jazz Lab, the free chord-chart trainer from 24:13 ➡️ https://jazz.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 - What Does Reading Music Actually Mean? 🎼 00:29 - Clefs: Treble, Bass, Alto & Tenor 00:42 - The X and Y Axis of Notation 01:26 - Two Hands, Two Staves — and the Pipe Organ 02:21 - Why I Started Without Reading 02:38 - Playing in Bands That Never Read Music 03:18 - Reading Is Optional, Not Theory 03:40 - Memorise and Visualise Instead 04:53 - What Sheet Music Is Really For 05:24 - Learning by Watching (Western Grandad) 06:35 - Learning by Intuition (Carnatic Grandad) 🎻 07:20 - Parroting: Learning Songs by Ear 07:40 - The Limits of Copying from YouTube 08:25 - Method 1: Read & Play (Sight-Reading) 🎹 09:06 - Even Drummers Sight-Read 🥁 09:35 - Transposing Instruments: Concert Pitch 10:20 - The Honest Limit of Sight-Reading 11:20 - Method 2: Rhythm Reading 11:40 - Note Durations & Tuplets Explained 12:02 - Clap It, Tap It, Vocalise It 12:22 - The Son Clave Stays With You 12:52 - Method 3: Reading Chord Charts 13:40 - Cm7b5 → Locrian or a 2-5-1 14:07 - Minor Major 7th → Melodic Minor 14:19 - C7b5 → Lydian Dominant 14:33 - A Chord Symbol Is a Scale 14:48 - Maj7 → Lydian, Pentatonic, Harmonic Major 15:33 - Charts in the Studio, Theatre & Jazz 16:28 - Why Chord Charts Aren’t Taught 16:45 - Method 4: Transcription 16:59 - Reverse-Engineering a Song by Ear 17:35 - Steps vs Leaps: Somewhere Over the Rainbow 🌈 18:13 - Shape, Intervals, Notes, Then Notate 20:04 - Beyond Staff: Solfège & Carnatic Swaras 20:46 - Guitar Frets & Instrument-Specific Notation 21:24 - Respecting Every Culture’s Notation 🌍 21:51 - Method 5: Sight-Singing 🎤 22:23 - Why Singing Trains Your Ear Best 22:53 - Practising Intervals from a Root 24:13 - Sight-Singing Chord Charts (Jazz Lab) 💛 Support these free lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp ➡️ +91 7760456847 📩 music@nathanielschool.com #SightSinging #SightReading #ReadingMusic

Learn 5 left hand piano patterns across 5 keys using one harmonic concept — explore rock, blues, and folk grooves with Jason Zac. Ever wondered how one simple harmonic idea can sound like five completely different genres? In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through five left hand piano patterns across five different keys — each one shifting the entire vibe of your music. We start with a power chord foundation and build outward using 6ths, 7ths, major and minor intervals. Because the third is left undefined, these voicings work in both major and minor contexts — giving you incredible harmonic flexibility for improvisation. You'll explore patterns in E, G#, Ab, F#, B, and A — moving through rock, blues, folk, and even experimental time signatures like 5/8 and 7/8. Each key gets its own rhythmic pattern with carefully placed accents and gaps that change the entire feel of your playing. A highlight of this lesson is Jason's tip on right hand improvisation: sing your melody first, then play it. This unlocks new rhythmic and melodic ideas that your fingers alone might never discover. We also touch on blues scales, Dorian mode, Mixolydian flavour, and how to mix the third for fresh harmonic colour. If you want structured, foundational piano training, check out our courses and apps at Nathaniel School of Music. Learn old-school ear training by singing intervals first and checking on piano. Build real relative pitch across major, minor & modal scales. Most musicians practise ear training the wrong way — by playing along with the piano or guitar while singing. That's mimicking, not hearing. In this lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shares the old-school approach: sing the note FIRST, then play your instrument only to check the answer. We begin by getting Sa wired into your system using a G drone or tanpura, then work through the full major scale using Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni). You can also use movable-DO solfège or simple syllables like la-la or na-na — whatever keeps your brain untangled. From there we expand into Mixolydian, Dorian, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor — each built by altering just a few intervals from the major scale. You'll practise singing close intervals first (Sa-Re-Sa), then widen the gap step by step (Sa-Ga-Sa, Sa-Ma-Sa, Sa-Pa-Sa) both above and below the tonic. This builds true relative pitch — the ability to hear how one note relates to another, the foundation of every melody. This isn't just an ear training drill. It's a 3D workout combining ear, theory and technique — because if you sing the right note but press the wrong key, you've still got work to do. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and try the exercise in different keys (find your preferred vocal key!). Once the order is comfortable, jumble the intervals to make it more musical and creative. If you'd like more singing-based ear training, sight singing or relative pitch lessons, drop a comment and let us know. Learn 2 essential broken-chord piano patterns over a G major chord progression, with left-hand variations, swing feel and accompaniment tips. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down two foundational broken-chord patterns that instantly upgrade your accompaniment, worked over a beautiful G major progression (G - C - Em - D - C/G - G) using smooth second-inversion voicings around middle C. The two core patterns, Out-Two-In-One and Out-In-Out-In, cover steady pumping feels and faster swing tempos, plus volume control, accenting, triplet variations and an extra top note for richer textures. On the left hand you'll go beyond simple roots with octaves, root-fifth toggles, passing bass notes and ghost notes, even singing chord tones while you accompany yourself. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:59 - Introduction to Broken Chords 🎹 01:35 - What Is a Broken Chord? 01:45 - Arpeggios vs Block Chords vs Broken Chords 02:56 - The G Major Chord Progression Overview 03:24 - Building the Chords Around Middle C 03:29 - Second Inversion of G Major 03:36 - Gliding to C Major with Common Tones 03:55 - E Minor Voicing 04:00 - D Major Quick Change 04:06 - C Over G Slash Chord 04:19 - Playing the Progression as Block Chords 04:48 - Finding a Safe Practice Tempo 05:02 - Tip: Think Ahead to the Next Chord 06:11 - Pattern 1: Out-Two-In-One Explained 🎼 06:26 - Counting in Eighth Notes 06:53 - Volume Control & Accenting Downbeats 07:55 - Applying Pattern 1 to the Full Progression 08:05 - Left Hand: Single Roots vs Octaves 08:43 - Bringing in a Melody on Top 09:32 - Pattern 2: Out-In-Out-In Explained 10:23 - Left Hand Octave Toggling Technique 11:00 - Comparing Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 11:10 - Adding Swing Feel with Triplets 11:45 - Emphasising Beats 2 and 4 12:04 - Advanced: Stacking Extra Top Notes 12:36 - Toggling Root and Fifth in the Left Hand 12:58 - Which Pattern Works Best for Swing? 13:15 - Songs That Fit These Patterns 13:28 - Singing Chord Tones While Playing 🎤 14:21 - Practising in E Major 14:40 - Quicker Chord Changes Within the Bar 15:11 - Left Hand Passing Bass Notes 15:30 - Adding Ghost Notes for Texture 16:01 - Broken Chords in 3/4 Time 16:23 - Left Hand Broken with Right Hand Melody 16:42 - Outro & Final Thoughts ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #BrokenChords #PianoAccompaniment #PianoLesson

Learn ear training by playing incomplete chords and singing the missing notes, using triads and seventh chords to improve your musical ear. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music develops your ear through active singing: you play incomplete chords on the piano while singing the missing notes — a technique that builds deeper harmonic understanding than traditional chord identification. You'll start with basic major triads, removing one note at a time (root, third or fifth) while your voice supplies the missing tone. The lesson progresses from simple diatonic exercises to harder progressions like the 1-5-6-4 sequence, forcing your ear to work harder and develop faster. It then advances to seventh-chord ear training using 2-5-1 progressions — essential for jazz and contemporary music — where you sing missing sevenths, roots, thirds and fifths while playing the remaining tones. Perfect for intermediate students ready to move beyond basic chord recognition toward the internal hearing needed for improvisation and composition. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Perfromance 00:23 - Introduction: Singing & Playing Demo 🎵 01:10 - Why Singing Beats Just Identification 01:30 - What Are Missing Notes? 02:02 - Indian Note Names: Sa, Gha, Pa, Ni 02:56 - Exercise 1: A Major Chord Setup 03:21 - Singing the Missing Root Note 🎶 03:38 - Diatonic Scale Practice Method 04:54 - Playing Root Notes in Lower Octave 05:10 - Checking Your Pitch Accuracy 05:54 - Exercise 2: Missing Third Notes 06:02 - Why Thirds Are Trickier to Hear 06:16 - Linear vs Random Chord Practice 07:43 - Exercise 3: Singing the Fifth 08:13 - Tritone vs Perfect Fifth Challenge 08:30 - Chord Progression Challenge: 1-5-6-4 08:48 - Missing Roots in Progression 09:07 - Missing Thirds in Progression 09:25 - Missing Fifths in Progression 09:59 - Seventh Chord Introduction 🎼 10:15 - D Major 7th Missing Note Demo 10:33 - 2-5-1 Progression Setup 10:46 - B Minor 7th - E Dom 7th - A Maj 7th 10:53 - Singing Missing Sevenths 11:04 - Singing Missing Roots in 7th Chords 11:12 - Piano Technique: Playing Incomplete Chords 11:52 - Different Keys Practice Suggestion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #EarTraining #SingingTriads #ChordEarTraining

Learn to harmonize piano and voice using thirds in G harmonic minor. Build musicianship with tenor and alto harmony exercises. Learn the art of piano and voice harmony with this comprehensive lesson on coordinating melody and harmony between two instruments. You'll discover how to play piano melody while singing harmonic thirds, just like legendary groups such as The Beatles, ABBA, and Queen. This lesson focuses on G harmonic minor scale harmonization using tenor and alto thirds. You'll learn the difference between upper thirds (tenor) and lower thirds (alto), understanding why tenor harmony is traditionally played an octave below the soprano melody for optimal sound quality. Practice exercises include ascending and descending scale harmonization, where your right hand plays the melody while your voice sings the corresponding third intervals. The lesson covers both major and minor thirds within the harmonic minor structure, helping you develop crucial ear training and coordination skills. Learn to play smooth chord progressions with inversions. Practice D-F#m-G-A with proper voice leading, timing, and accompaniment techniques. Learn to play smooth, professional-sounding chord progressions with this essential piano tutorial. We'll work through the popular D-F#m-G-A progression (1-3-4-5) that appears in countless songs. This lesson focuses on chord inversions and voice leading - the secret to making your chord changes sound seamless instead of choppy. You'll practice finding common tones between chords and learn three different starting positions: root position, first inversion, and second inversion. We cover essential accompaniment techniques including proper timing (playing each chord for 2 or 4 beats), articulation patterns (three staccatos and one legato), and how to maintain steady time while singing. You'll also learn when to use the sustain pedal effectively. Perfect for beginner to intermediate pianists who want to accompany singers, play in bands, or simply make their chord progressions sound more musical. By the end, you'll understand how to make any four-chord progression flow naturally. Ready for structured piano lessons? Check out our courses and start your musical journey with proper guidance and weekly practice goals. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Build Chords from Major Scale (Easy Theory) - https://youtu.be/7sv_vrg8XTg 🎯 Practice Popular Progressions Major & Minor - https://youtu.be/PN6JdJf3L0o 🔑 Compose with Dorian Mode & Progressions - https://youtu.be/NCFZhIyG0Y8 💡 Chord Inversions - Interesting Facts - https://youtu.be/SSc19Czmvzg 📂 Minor Scales - Theory, Exercises & Compositions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:24 - Introduction & 4-Chord Preview 02:02 - D Major Scale Setup (2 Sharps) 02:41 - Left Hand: Always Play the Root 03:04 - Right Hand Chord Formations 03:37 - Finding Common Tones Between Chords 05:07 - Chord Fingering Tips (Black vs White Keys) 06:01 - First Inversion Starting Point 07:12 - Second Inversion Practice 08:04 - Three Starting Positions Summary 08:27 - Timing: 2 or 4 Beats Per Chord 09:50 - Non-Negotiables: Hit All 3 Notes 10:35 - Avoid Gaps Between Chords 11:07 - Keep Piano & Voice Independent 11:26 - Keep Piano & Voice Independent 12:24 - Common Accompaniment Problems 13:30 - Articulation: 3 Staccato + 1 Legato 14:03 - Drum Kit Emulation Technique 14:40 - Sustain Pedal Control 15:18 - Adding Passing Bass Notes 16:43 - Volume Control & Dynamics 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoAccompaniment #ChordInversions #VoiceLeading

Nail all 24 major and minor chords with this chromatic second-inversion piano exercise. Learn voice leading, block chords, arpeggios, smooth chord progressions, and how to practise every major and minor triad across the keyboard. Learn to practise all 12 major and 12 minor chords in second inversion using chromatic voice-leading patterns, block chords and arpeggios. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the power of second-inversion triads with a chromatic exercise that covers all 12 major and 12 minor chords, focusing on voice leading that creates smooth, musical progressions. You'll discover why second inversions are so effective for voice leading — with the root in the middle of the chord, you create harmonic movements that sound more sophisticated than root-position progressions. You'll learn to identify major and minor thirds quickly by asking questions like 'C is the major third of which triad?' You'll practise multiple patterns including block chords, high-low-middle-low arpeggios and reinforced-melody techniques. Each chromatic step reveals two chords — one major and one minor — creating 24 total progressions that flow beautifully together while sharpening your ear. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:54 - Introduction to Second Inversion Triads 🎹 01:09 - Why Choose Second Inversion for Voice Leading 01:26 - Understanding Root Position vs Inversions 01:49 - The Chromatic Climbing Exercise Overview 02:17 - Major vs Minor Third Identification 03:24 - Starting with C: Ab Major and A Minor 05:23 - Block Chord Practice Pattern 05:39 - High-Low-Middle-Low Arpeggio Pattern 🎵 05:56 - Reinforcing the Melody Note Technique 06:51 - C# Progression: A Major to Bb Minor 07:49 - Left Hand with Chord Roots 08:24 - D Progression: Bb Major to B Minor 08:47 - D# Progression: B Major to C Minor 09:56 - E Progression: C Major to C# Minor 10:19 - F Progression: Db Major to D Minor 11:17 - F# Progression: D Major to Eb Minor 11:36 - G Progression: Eb Major to E Minor 11:49 - G# Progression: E Major to F Minor 12:04 - A Progression: F Major to F# Minor 13:19 - A# Progression: F# Major to G Minor 13:34 - B Progression: G Major to G# Minor 14:10 - Completing the Chromatic Circle 14:35 - Left Hand Root Movement Practice 16:12 - Ear Training with Major/Minor Thirds 16:23 - Chord Trees Composition Concept 🌳 16:41 - Practice Tips for All Skill Levels ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordInversions #PianoTriads #VoiceLeading

Learn interval inversions and reverse ear training to improve your piano playing, composition and musical hearing. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music reveals an approach to ear training most teachers never cover — interval inversions — showing you how to hear and practise intervals in both ascending and descending directions. You'll learn the Rule of 9, where major thirds become minor sixths, perfect fourths transform into perfect fifths, and the tritone stays unchanged when inverted. You'll work through every interval chromatically from unison to octave, hearing exactly how each inversion sounds and feels. The lesson goes beyond basic ear training with practical applications for technique, composition and arrangement, so you break free from only practising upward motion and develop fluency above and below any root. Perfect for intermediate pianists, it includes chromatic exercises, diatonic work in F minor and random interval practice. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:33 - 🎹 Introduction & Lesson Overview 00:48 - 📱 Required Tools: Tuners and Apps 01:14 - Close vs Open (Spread Intervals) 02:06 - Lesson Applications 02:23 - Step & Leap Motion 03:26 - 🎵 What Are Reverse Intervals? 03:41 - 🎼 D♭ Major Scale Breakdown 04:50 - ⬆️ Major Third to Minor Sixth 05:40 - 📚 Major vs Minor Interval Flipping 06:10 - 🔄 Singing Interval Inversion 06:24 - 2️⃣ Second to Seventh Inversions 06:59 - 🎯 Unison and Octave Practice 07:15 - 🎤 Vocal Range Considerations 08:10 - 4️⃣ Perfect Fourth & Fifth Inversions 08:31 - 3️⃣ Third to Sixth Inversions 09:33 - Revision of all the Intervals 10:52 - 🎶 C Major Chromatic Exercise 11:19 - 🎵 Minor Second Practice 12:34 - 📈 Major Second to Minor Seventh 13:40 - 🎼 Minor Third Exercises 14:32 - Sing the Intervals for better practice 14:48 - Working with the Tuner 15:23 - Octave switching with the Voice 15:43 - 👹 The Tritone Exception 18:00 - 🎹 F Minor Diatonic Practice 20:53 - 👂 Piano + Vocal Training 21:56 - Singing after the Piano 22:50 - Close vs Wide Interval 23:25 - 🎲 Random Note Practice 24:16 - 🎯 Priority Learning Order 24:43 - 🎹 Piano Technique Applications 25:20 - 🎼 Composition & Arrangement Uses 26:19 - 🎤 Vocal Training Tips 27:00 - 📝 Homework & Next Steps ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #IntervalInversion #EarTraining #Intervals

Train your ear and hands to tell apart triplets, semiquavers and clave feels on piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to execute rhythms that sound almost identical but feel completely different. You'll explore triplets, semiquavers (16ths), swing and clave patterns, and how to apply them over scales, chords and even while singing. You'll learn how triplets create a flowing feel versus the forward drive of semiquavers, how to use konnakol to subdivide rhythms, and how to practise with a metronome at 70-80 bpm with accents and syncopation. You'll also apply the drills on major and minor scales and explore Son, Rumba and Bossa claves. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 00:32 - 1- Beat Structure 00:53 - 2- Beat Rhythm 01:34 - 1-Beat Division → Quavers (Eighth Notes) 03:36 - Add Traditional Swing Feel 04:54 - Straight vs Swing Explained 05:12 - Dividing the Beat into 4 (Semiquavers) 06:20 - How Swing is felt 06:53 - 1 Beat and 2 hits 08:57 - Dotted Feel vs Straight 09:17 - Dividing by 2 & 4 10:16 - Semiquaver vs Quaver Pulse 12:12 - Swinging the Semiquaver Feel 12:46 - Triplet Feel 13:03 - Semiquavers: Swing vs Straight 13:17 - Quaver Feel in Context 14:52 - Applying Rhythms Over 2 Beats 15:19 - The Famous Tresillo 16:29 - Quarter-Note Triplets 16:54 - D Minor Triplet Example 17:54 - Dividing the Triplet by 3 19:00 - Understanding the Dotted Quaver Feel 19:24 - Tresillo (Revisited) 19:52 - Triplet Variations 20:06 - Rhythm Patterns Across a Bar 20:34 - Son Clave 21:20 - Rumba Clave 22:49 - Bossa Clave 24:08 - Capping off the three Claves 25:11 - Recap & Wrap-Up 26:21 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Triplets #ClaveRhythm #PianoRhythm

There are six different shapes hiding inside every triad, and this lesson trains your ear to sing them all. You'll learn what closed and open voicings actually are (with piano examples), how to recognise and play all triad inversions, ear training techniques using Swaras (Sa–Ga–Pa) for precision, and the ultimate test: singing spread triads without any reference. Whether you're a vocalist, pianist, or music student, this lesson bridges the gap between harmony and ear training. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:34 - Introduction to the Lesson 02:31 - Closed vs Open Voicing Explained 02:49 - What is Closed Position? 05:27 - 6 Shapes of a Triad: 3 Closed + 3 Open 09:07 - Interval Breakdown of Each Shape 09:52 - Finding the Root in Any Inversion 14:03 - Ear Training Ground Rules (Level 1 to 3) 14:15 - Level 1 : Play traids as blocks 14:32 - Level 2 : Play the root or refernce interval 15:02 - Level 3 : No Piano, just your voice 16:05 - How to Sing a Triad Using Swaras (Sa–Ga–Pa) 16:56 - The Ultimate Challenge: Singing Spread Voicings 23:10 - Recap & Practice Plan 25:05 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #SingTriads #EarTraining #ChordInversions

Here's a simple exercise to practice all chords, major and minor, with their inversions in both hands using block chords and arpeggios. Using a single triad, we connect its notes to every single major and minor chord that shares a common chord tone between them. To practice this on piano, the common note is anchored at the top position in the right hand and at the bottom in the left hand. We start with G and the six triads that contain it, then move the anchor note to B and D. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:32 - What you will learn? 01:56 - Starting off with G Major with its Inversions 02:57 - Chord Trees 03:17 - Triads that have G in them 04:53 - 6 Triads that has note G 05:20 - Now for the Exercise 06:59 - HLML Arpeggio 07:25 - Minor Chords with the “G” Wall 08:39 - Practicing all 6 Triads 10:35 - Exercise in both hands 11:24 - Expansion of the Arpeggio 12:08 - Left Hand Pulse 13:04 - Expanded Arpeggio in RH & Slow Arpeggio in LH 13:33 - Clashes are avoided 14:05 - Changing the Anchor Note 15:36 - Mapping Chords w.r.t B as the anchor 16:40 - B as the wall on top 17:22 - Both Hand together with arpeggio in RH 17:39 - Expanded Arpeggio in RH 18:28 - Mapping Triads that has note D 19:01 - Picking “D” as the anchor 19:21 - Let’s train our Ear 19:48 - Arpeggiate RH & LH 20:09 - Future Practice 21:01 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordInversions #Triads #PianoPractice

In this music theory and ear training lesson, you'll learn how to sing and recognize intervals in relation to any chord of your choice. We'll begin by exploring how triads are linked through intervals, including their inversions. Next, we'll focus on singing specific chord tones, both upper and lower. The final challenge will be to master four essential arpeggio patterns using all inversions, and then apply the same exercises to a minor chord for a comprehensive workout. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - What you will learn 00:14 - Traditional method of Learning Intervals 00:26 - All Intervals wrt Db 02:20 - Wrt Previous or Next Note 03:13 - Intervals wrt a Chord 05:02 - Building Basic Triads 05:24 - How many intervals per Chord? 09:32 - Weights of Intervals 11:10 - Combinations with Chat GPT 13:57 - Major Chord with Inversions 14:34 - Root Position 15:46 - Singing the Top & Bottom 17:11 - First Inversion 21:06 - Slash Chords vs Inversions 21:28 - 2nd Inversions 21:53 - Singing Tips 23:39 - 2nd Inversion Observed Intervalically 24:35 - All inversions recapped 25:35 - Singing Internally 25:51 - Low - Middle - High 26:48 - Arp 1 - LMHM L 27:40 - Arp 2 - LHMH L 28:27 - Arp 3 - HMLM H 29:34 - Arp 4: HLML H 31:29 - Same Arpeggios with Inversions 33:44 - Exploring C Minor Triad 34:50 - Arpeggios Patterns over the Minor Chord 36:14 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordEarTraining #EarTraining #ChordInversions
