Learn how to improvise on piano with just two notes and two chords: D minor and A7, with the pillar notes D and A, from your first whole note to enclosures, trills and triplets. Beginner to intermediate, with Jason Zac. Pick two chords, D minor and A7, and keep them pumping in the left hand. Then take just two notes, D and A, and let them be the pillars your melody always comes back to. That is the whole idea: land on a pillar, and everything you play around it sounds like it belongs. We build it one level at a time. Level 0 is the pillar notes in whole notes, half notes and off the beat. Then one note below (the leading tone), one down and one up, trills (including a more Indian trill), repeated cells and swing triplets, runs that connect the two pillars, and finally enclosures. Near the end there is a taste of a blues minor colour over the same two chords, and a way to practise it so you can compose your own little pieces. Play along with the chapters below, pause the video, and try each level before moving on. The same plan works in any minor key once you move the two pillars. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons 🎹 Simple but Effective Piano Improvisation Using Chord Tones as Pillars ➡️ https://youtu.be/xEqm46HKrBw 🎼 Compose & Improvise Better Melodies Using Scale & Chord Tones (Piano) ➡️ https://youtu.be/h2K0ZqkZViw 🎵 5 Things You Didn't Know About the Harmonic Minor Scale (Piano Theory) ➡️ https://youtu.be/i7dU99lBWAk ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ============================= 00:00 - The two-chord performance 01:06 - The left hand: D minor and A7 03:09 - Level 0: the pillar notes D and A 05:03 - Level 1: one below 07:14 - Level 2: one down, one up 08:09 - Level 3: trills 09:31 - Level 4: repeat it, then triplets 10:28 - Level 5: connect the pillars 12:30 - Level 6: enclosures 13:14 - More notes, and a blues minor colour 14:52 - Putting it all together 16:20 - How to practise this ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Lessons ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoImprovisation
Piano rhythm exercises for the left hand: three notes in every two beats, the first note always on beat 1 — and every rhythm pattern that one rule gives you. Piano lesson with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music. The rule: your left hand plays three notes in two beats. Any three notes you like — C D E, a chord in spread position, a closed triad, a power chord. The first note always lands on beat 1; only the other two move. In 4/4, copy the first two beats into beats 3 and 4. Start with E♭ in the bass — root, 5th, octave (E♭ B♭ E♭) — and divide each beat by two: 1 & 2 &. Then try root, 5th and 9th (E♭ B♭ F). Divide the beat by four (1 e & a 2 e & a) and the tresillo turns up; move to F (F C G) for a sixteenth-note drill. Last, triplets (1 & a 2 & a): a whole new playground, and your right-hand tune may have to change with it. Count the options. Divide by 2 and there are 3 spaces for your two moving notes → 3 patterns. Divide by 3: 5 spaces → 10 patterns. Divide by 4: 7 spaces → 21 patterns. Play each one as a drill first, then put a nursery rhyme or a tune you know on top in the right hand, then improvise — and keep checking you can still play the plain drill. One rhythm can take a whole hour at the piano. That is normal. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Everything for Life Bundle ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ▶️ Related lessons Practice Hit Points Over Multiple Time Divisions (Piano Rhythm & Groove) ➡️ https://youtu.be/DtE6en-4ndY 3-Hit Rhythm Patterns for ALL Time Signatures (Tresillo, Waltz, 5/8, 7/8 & 9/8) ➡️ https://youtu.be/9chHpik2Gc0 Piano Hand Independence and Rhythm: The Subdivision Exercise That Makes One Chord Groove ➡️ https://youtu.be/v2wMT78ZAlg The Tresillo: Pop's Most-Used Piano Rhythm, Explained ➡️ https://youtu.be/knJebrulzRI 5 Methods to Use and Feel Triplets in All Forms of Music ➡️ https://youtu.be/da7sghBHai0 Free rhythm practice apps ➡️ https://apps.nathanielschool.com 🎓 https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All 1000+ lessons ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 📚 Free tutorials library — search "rhythm" ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ Chapters (times = recording time; final times after the edit) 00:00 - Cold open: the two-beat groove 00:44 - The goal: three notes, first on the beat 01:21 - The rule: every two-beat pattern 03:14 - The chord: E♭ root, fifth, octave 03:31 - Divide the beat by two 07:07 - Root, fifth and ninth 07:49 - Divide the beat by four (the tresillo) 08:34 - The semiquaver drill on F 10:49 - Patience and the drill 12:07 - Drill first, then improvise 13:25 - Triplets: a new playground 14:36 - All three divisions together 14:57 - Count your options: 3, 10, 21 16:04 - How to practise it 16:51 - Thanks for watching 💰 PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://www.instagram.com/jasonzac 💬 WhatsApp ➡️ +91 77604 56847 ✉️ music@nathanielschool.com #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoRhythm
How to play piano fills between chords — octave licks over modern pop voicings, in one two-bar exercise you can take to any key. Three rich chords in the right hand — Dmaj9, F♯m7(11) and E(add4) in A major — octaves in the left, and two beats at the end of the loop for a fill in octaves. You'll learn four octave licks, a triplet fill and a semiquaver fill, B minor as a filler chord, a second F♯ minor shape, and a voicing template that moves the whole exercise to A♭ major and any other key. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com 🎛️ FREE PRACTICE TOOLS — no signup Runway — build fills, licks and runs over a chord ➡️ https://runway.nathanielschool.com Metronome with swing, triplets and semiquavers ➡️ https://metronome.nathanielschool.com ▶️ Related Lessons 🎹 Stop Playing 1-5-8 In Your Left Hand (Pop Piano) ➡️ https://youtu.be/XWGhJMxhcE4 🎹 5 Fancy Piano Chord Hacks to Transform a Simple Triad ➡️ https://youtu.be/qTkiqeE2jw0 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com 🆓 Free tutorials website — every lesson sorted by topic and level ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance: modern pop voicings with octave fills 01:14 Welcome: a full workout — voicings, octaves, time feels 03:05 The chords in A major: D, F♯m, E 04:10 Left hand: the root and the octave 04:43 The E chord is a placeholder for the filler 05:23 Swap in B minor: a ii–V to E 05:40 Right hand: Dmaj9 voicing (5 7 9 3) 06:04 F♯m7(11): A B E A under one thumb 07:04 E(add4): A B E G♯ 08:31 Bm7 as a filler chord on beat 3 09:15 Ghost notes and swing in the left hand 10:13 The simple three-note version 11:22 Octave fills: Lick 1 (A B A E → F♯) 12:18 Lick 2 and Lick 3, with the pedal 13:30 Recovery: land back on beat 1 14:08 The new lick 14:23 Dotted notes, triplets and semiquavers 15:45 Lick 4: A B C♯ G♯ → F♯ 15:57 Put it all together 16:27 Recap and the alternate F♯m shape 17:31 Play the whole etude again 18:29 Voicing templates: key numbers vs chord numbers 20:14 Transpose to A♭ major 21:07 A♭ improvisation with octave fills 21:43 Practice it in all 12 keys 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac · the school ➡️ https://instagram.com/nathanielschool 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Lessons ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoFills
Part 3 of our Piano Gym series! We tackle the Speed Bag drill (eighth notes, triplets, semiquavers on E7♯) and the Rope Climb pattern. Practice along and level up your chord fluency. Watch part 4 for the pyramid sets breakdown! 🎹 Take one chord and build ten gym-style piano workouts around it. In this practical lesson we use a single E7 (dominant seventh) chord and turn it into a full technique session that transfers to any chord you like. First we break down the E7 shape — root, major third, fifth and flat seventh — with sensible fingering for both hands and all four positions: root, first, second and third inversion. Then we run the ten drills: the inversion ladder, the siren, piano jumping jacks, the horn throw, the dead hang, the speed bag, the rope climb, the pyramid set, the crunch and a cool-down stretch. Along the way you'll practise arpeggios against block chords, alternating two-note patterns, tritone swaps between the third and flat seventh, finger-by-finger lifts, speed work with a bouncing wrist, hand-crossing and accent groupings in twos, threes, fives and sevens. This is for pianists who can build chords but want them to feel musical and coordinated. Get your piano out, start slow and try every workout on other chords around the circle of fifths — then tell us your favourite gesture for the horn throw in the comments. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 Improvise over ONE chord - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9oizLJPiwwH_gvSH-IFu_V 📚 Making Chord Practice FUN with Circle of Fifths - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-D6G1jDe18TFflopjjnxRG 🗂️ Chord Voicing & Inversions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 📋 Arpeggios - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 🎶 Hand Independence - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoChords #ChordInversions #PianoPractice
Learn how to read and build rhythm notation on piano beat by beat, dividing beats by two, three and four using a simple play-or-rest system with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music. 🥁 TRY THE APP FREE — Rhythm Arithmetic, the web app demoed in this lesson (tap a cell to notate it instantly, loop it, change the meter, roll the dice): https://binary-arithmetic.nathanielschool.com 🎛️ All 25+ free practice tools ➡️ https://apps.nathanielschool.com Rhythm gets a lot simpler when you reduce it to one choice: play or don't play, note or rest. In this lesson we build rhythms beat by beat — almost like binary arithmetic, zeros and ones — and show the Western notation equivalent for every pattern. We start at the top level: sound or silence in each slot of a bar. From there you'll see how note values get their shapes — the oval becomes a minim, shade it for a crotchet (quarter note), add a tail for a quaver — and how rests get their own symbols. The whole system runs on beat division: divide the beat by two, three or four. You'll work through simple one-beat cells, two-beat patterns with dotted notes, trivial and "groovy" triplets, swing feel, and sixteen sixteenth-note options. We also demo our web app, Rhythm Arithmetic — tap a cell to notate instantly, loop it, choose meters from 4/4 to 3/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8 and 5/8, merge phrases (ABBA, ABAC), and try famous patterns like son clave, rumba clave, Charleston and habanera. There's a rhythm dictation mode too, to test your ears. Great for pianists, keyboardists, producers and any musician who wants to read and count rhythm with confidence. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 📂 All Things Rhythm - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT8AILe58QHSRI7c3I6LKcWI 📚 Sixteenth Note Practice - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9xy8UYvtLyUcpSCEILXrPH 🗂️ Piano Rhythm Patterns: Salsa, Reggae, Waltz - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_tHExU4pBEaMxDbTP6k5Kf 📋 Ear Training - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-GHvpugWvYgEuLAL4f01ZK 🎶 Combo Piano Practice - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-O_9vTKozS6I2HNBfdVOcG ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Introduction: Build Any Rhythm 🥁 00:27 - Play or Don’t Play — Note or Rest 00:38 - Notes vs Rests: Symbols Explained 🎼 01:00 - How Note Values Get Their Shapes 01:40 - To Play or Not to Play 01:55 - Beat Division System Explained 02:29 - Introducing Rhythm Arithmetic (Web App) 📱 04:40 - See It, Hear It, Become It 05:02 - Tap a Cell, It Notates Instantly 05:15 - Loop, Sing and Shape the Rhythm 05:29 - Rest View vs Hold View 05:46 - Percussion Voices: Cajon, Conga, Clave 06:03 - Rhythm Dictation Mode 🎯 06:32 - Start Simple: One Bar Grid 07:00 - Four Options on One Beat 07:20 - Two Beats & Dotted Notes 07:27 - Triplets: Trivial vs Groovy 07:33 - Swing Triplet Feel 07:44 - Quarter Note Triplets 07:51 - Sixteen Sixteenth-Note Options 08:08 - Build a Merged Phrase (ABBA / ABAC) 09:23 - Customising Individual Beats 09:44 - Adding a Rest on Beat Three 10:06 - Mixing Divide-by-Three & Four 10:25 - Zeros and Ones for Non-Readers 10:36 - Drag & Edit the Notation 10:58 - Rolling the Dice: Full Random Rhythm 11:42 - Adjusting the Crotchet Pulse 11:48 - Changing Time Signatures Live 12:09 - Building Your Own 5/8 Composition 12:38 - Famous Clave Patterns 🥁 13:34 - Melodic Mode Preview 🎹 14:11 - Future Features & Mobile App 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #RhythmReading #RhythmNotation #MusicTheory
One chord. One finger. That's the whole exercise. The left hand plays a single arpeggio — Low, High, Middle, High on E, B, G# and B — and never changes. It's the engine. Then the right hand does nothing but land single notes in the gaps: the "e" and the "a" of "1 e & a". That's it. No chord changes, no new shapes. The groove comes from WHERE you put the note, not how many you play. In this short version: the engine, targeting the e's, targeting the a's, walking the E major scale on those hit points, adding diatonic thirds underneath, then switching the whole thing into triplets and swing. Full lesson here: https://youtu.be/v2wMT78ZAlg — it goes much deeper, including the chord colours (E major 7 → E7 → E6) and all eight diatonic thirds in E major. 🎹 LEARN WITH US Music Method Live, our Bangalore centres and the self-paced Everything For Life bundle: https://nathanielschool.com 🛠 FREE PRACTICE TOOLS 25+ free browser tools for chords, inversions, rhythm, notation and ear training: https://apps.nathanielschool.com 📘 STUDY GUIDE 💛 SUPPORT THESE FREE LESSONS PayPal: https://paypal.me/jasonzac?locale.x=en_GB&country.x=IN UPI: jasonzac-1@okhdfcbank (Jason Zac) 📩 TALK TO US WhatsApp: https://wa.me/917760456847 Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac · https://instagram.com/nathanielschool #PianoLessons #LearnPiano #MusicTheory #HandIndependence #PianoPractice
Learn to play triplets on piano with this melodic exercise — eighth note, quarter note & sextuplet triplets explained with fingering & licks. Triplets are the heartbeat of so much music — especially in Indian, sub-continental, and Eastern traditions — yet they're one of the most under-taught rhythms in Western piano curriculum. In this lesson, Jason Zac walks you through a complete triplet exercise built around a beautiful B minor melody. You'll learn the four key types of triplets: eighth note triplets (the standard), sextuplets (divide by six), quarter note triplets (the hemiola), and half note triplets. Jason demonstrates how to transition smoothly between semiquaver (divide-by-four) feel and triplet (divide-by-three) feel — a skill that instantly elevates your rhythmic vocabulary. The melodic exercise itself moves through B minor, D major over F#, and A major (with an added 4th), incorporating harmonized thirds, dominant chord licks, and tasteful Indian-style grace notes. You'll get detailed piano fingering for tricky passages across black notes, plus a simplified beginner version if the ornamental playing feels too advanced right now. This lesson is especially valuable if you're an Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepali, or other Eastern musician — or anyone who wants to internalise triplets beyond just counting "one-and-a, two-and-a." Jason also touches on konakol syllables (thakita) and how different cultures accent triplets uniquely. Hit subscribe, turn on the bell, and let us know in the comments which type of triplet you find hardest to feel! 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://www.nathanielschool.com/members-videos 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Melodic Arpeggios: Accent Patterns & Chords - https://youtu.be/DbL4DJnwIhA 🎯 Sixteenth Notes Exercise: Music Theory & Piano - https://youtu.be/0eYCe2Wtt8c 🔑 Syncopated Rhythms: Folk Melody for Beginners - https://youtu.be/6elW86pxMkI 💡 Piano Rhythm Lesson: Learn Semiquavers & Triplets - https://youtu.be/1NJKVwzfluI 📂 Minor Scales - Theory, Exercises & Compositions - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://www.nathanielschool.com/ 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://www.nathanielschool.com/free-tutorials ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:36 - Why Triplets Matter for Eastern Musicians 00:57 - What Are Triplets? Learn 2 essential broken-chord piano patterns over a G major chord progression, with left-hand variations, swing feel and accompaniment tips. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down two foundational broken-chord patterns that instantly upgrade your accompaniment, worked over a beautiful G major progression (G - C - Em - D - C/G - G) using smooth second-inversion voicings around middle C. The two core patterns, Out-Two-In-One and Out-In-Out-In, cover steady pumping feels and faster swing tempos, plus volume control, accenting, triplet variations and an extra top note for richer textures. On the left hand you'll go beyond simple roots with octaves, root-fifth toggles, passing bass notes and ghost notes, even singing chord tones while you accompany yourself. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:59 - Introduction to Broken Chords 🎹 01:35 - What Is a Broken Chord? 01:45 - Arpeggios vs Block Chords vs Broken Chords 02:56 - The G Major Chord Progression Overview 03:24 - Building the Chords Around Middle C 03:29 - Second Inversion of G Major 03:36 - Gliding to C Major with Common Tones 03:55 - E Minor Voicing 04:00 - D Major Quick Change 04:06 - C Over G Slash Chord 04:19 - Playing the Progression as Block Chords 04:48 - Finding a Safe Practice Tempo 05:02 - Tip: Think Ahead to the Next Chord 06:11 - Pattern 1: Out-Two-In-One Explained 🎼 06:26 - Counting in Eighth Notes 06:53 - Volume Control & Accenting Downbeats 07:55 - Applying Pattern 1 to the Full Progression 08:05 - Left Hand: Single Roots vs Octaves 08:43 - Bringing in a Melody on Top 09:32 - Pattern 2: Out-In-Out-In Explained 10:23 - Left Hand Octave Toggling Technique 11:00 - Comparing Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 11:10 - Adding Swing Feel with Triplets 11:45 - Emphasising Beats 2 and 4 12:04 - Advanced: Stacking Extra Top Notes 12:36 - Toggling Root and Fifth in the Left Hand 12:58 - Which Pattern Works Best for Swing? 13:15 - Songs That Fit These Patterns 13:28 - Singing Chord Tones While Playing 🎤 14:21 - Practising in E Major 14:40 - Quicker Chord Changes Within the Bar 15:11 - Left Hand Passing Bass Notes 15:30 - Adding Ghost Notes for Texture 16:01 - Broken Chords in 3/4 Time 16:23 - Left Hand Broken with Right Hand Melody 16:42 - Outro & Final Thoughts ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #BrokenChords #PianoAccompaniment #PianoLesson

What makes this melody so fascinating is how it can be felt in completely different ways depending on your time signature and beat division approach, all while keeping the same tempo and melody intact. We start by examining three core time signatures: 3/4 (with three strong beats: 1-2-3, 1-2-3), 4/4 (where the melody becomes triplets: 1-and-a-2-and-a-3-and-a-4-and-a), and 6/8 (with two strong hits per cycle). The key is in the left-hand accompaniment—whether you use an oompa-pa pattern, traditional arpeggios, or different accent structures, the left hand establishes the pulse and transforms how the melody is perceived. It's like two rhythmic worlds colliding with each other. But we don't stop there. Once you understand how to shift between time signatures, we dive into creative beat division systems: swing feel (dividing beats by three), eighth-note triplets (both regular and "lazy" anticipations), funky semiquaver patterns (dividing by four with tresillo rhythms), and even a cinematic 7/8 time signature (grouped as 3+2+2). Each variation reveals new possibilities while respecting the integrity of this beautiful carol. ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses — Everything for Life Bundle A complete library of structured lessons across Piano, Theory, Ear Training and more - https://www.nathanielschool.com/members-videos 🏡 Explore Our YouTube Channel Watch detailed tutorials, performances and guided practice sessions - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists ✨ My Favourite Things - https://youtu.be/u7lcIy50J-8 🎅 Christmas Piano & Theory Tutorials - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9HU-N5Jy2d9gNoBATIr21r 🎄 Christmas Chronicles - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_Wcia3ov9oHx9jDPtjdqBC ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music Join our lessons, workshops and guided programs across instruments and levels - https://www.nathanielschool.com/ 📚 All Our YouTube Lessons in One Place Browse 1000+ tutorials arranged by level, topic and genre for easy learning - https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ 00:00 - Performance 00:41 - Overview: Rhythm, Time Signatures & Beat Division 01:27 - The Three-Note Melody Structure (G, F#, G, A) 01:58 - The Mysterious Melody 03:55 - Understanding 3/4 Time Signature 04:45 - 3/4 Oompa-Pa Rhythm Pattern 05:50 - Oom-Pah-Pah! Master triplet feel piano rhythms used in Indian folk and global dance styles. This final part (Part 4) of our rhythm series explores the triplet feel — the heartbeat of many Indian folk rhythms. We look at binary on/off permutations and how to apply them across left-hand bass and right-hand chords. You'll see how these grooves appear in South Indian, Rajasthani, Nepali, Konkani and Sri Lankan folk traditions. By practising triplet subdivisions, you'll strengthen your rhythmic independence, learn to adapt the piano to a drum-like role, and prepare yourself to play in any groove setting, from cultural folk jams to modern fusions. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:10 - Introduction 00:52 - Recap of the Lesson Series 01:53 - Understanding the Triplet Feel 02:22 - Trivial Beat combinations 03:14 - Divide it by Three 04:07 - Coming Swings 04:29 - Toggle & Add Passing Notes 05:08 - Difference between Tresillo & Triplets 05:59 - Add the Trivial Rhythm 06:40 - Triplets used around the Subcontinent 07:40 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #IndianFolkPiano #TripletFeel #PianoRhythm

Train your ear and hands to tell apart triplets, semiquavers and clave feels on piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to execute rhythms that sound almost identical but feel completely different. You'll explore triplets, semiquavers (16ths), swing and clave patterns, and how to apply them over scales, chords and even while singing. You'll learn how triplets create a flowing feel versus the forward drive of semiquavers, how to use konnakol to subdivide rhythms, and how to practise with a metronome at 70-80 bpm with accents and syncopation. You'll also apply the drills on major and minor scales and explore Son, Rumba and Bossa claves. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 00:32 - 1- Beat Structure 00:53 - 2- Beat Rhythm 01:34 - 1-Beat Division → Quavers (Eighth Notes) 03:36 - Add Traditional Swing Feel 04:54 - Straight vs Swing Explained 05:12 - Dividing the Beat into 4 (Semiquavers) 06:20 - How Swing is felt 06:53 - 1 Beat and 2 hits 08:57 - Dotted Feel vs Straight 09:17 - Dividing by 2 & 4 10:16 - Semiquaver vs Quaver Pulse 12:12 - Swinging the Semiquaver Feel 12:46 - Triplet Feel 13:03 - Semiquavers: Swing vs Straight 13:17 - Quaver Feel in Context 14:52 - Applying Rhythms Over 2 Beats 15:19 - The Famous Tresillo 16:29 - Quarter-Note Triplets 16:54 - D Minor Triplet Example 17:54 - Dividing the Triplet by 3 19:00 - Understanding the Dotted Quaver Feel 19:24 - Tresillo (Revisited) 19:52 - Triplet Variations 20:06 - Rhythm Patterns Across a Bar 20:34 - Son Clave 21:20 - Rumba Clave 22:49 - Bossa Clave 24:08 - Capping off the three Claves 25:11 - Recap & Wrap-Up 26:21 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Triplets #ClaveRhythm #PianoRhythm

Loosen up your piano arpeggios and make any chord flow — wild, "chaotic" arpeggio ideas played over the changes to "What a Wonderful World". Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows how to break out of predictable up-and-down arpeggios and let your chords flow with unexpected, ear-catching patterns over a familiar progression. You'll explore how to vary direction, order and rhythm so a single chord becomes a stream of movement, and how these "chaotic" arpeggios add colour and surprise to any accompaniment. It's a creative way to make your right hand sing while the harmony stays grounded — a flowing, expressive approach you can apply to almost any song on the piano. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoArpeggios #WhatAWonderfulWorld #PianoTutorial
Give your piano arpeggios real 'impact' by stressing specific beats of the pattern - and make them groove in any time signature. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music starts with chord voicings, then shows how accenting different beats (beat 2; 1 and 3; 1 and 4; 3 and 4) transforms a plain arpeggio into something that drives. You'll then take these impact arpeggios into 3/4 waltz feels, triplets and odd meters like 5/8 and 7/8, grouping notes in sets of 2, 3 and 4 for endless rhythmic variety. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:36 Lesson Plan & Goals 02:07 Chord Progression with Inversions 05:20 Voicing Strategy 2 07:06 Voicing Strategy 3 09:23 Basic Arpeggios 10:42 Creating “Impact” 13:30 Impact at Beat 2 14:03 Impact at 1 and 3 14:28 Impact at 1 and 4 15:34 Impact at 3 and 4 15:53 Focussing on Sub-beats 17:23 “Tresillo” - 1, & of 2, 4 18:21 3/4 Arpeggios (Waltz) 21:15 LH Bass Accents 21:57 3/4 in Triplets 23:25 Impact Arpeggios over Odd Time (5/8) 25:22 7/8 Impact 26:13 Sets of 2, 3 & 4 28:52 Revision 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎶 All our Arpeggio Lessons (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎼 Arpeggios reference ➡️ https://geni.us/Arpeggios ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoArpeggios #Accents #PianoRhythm

Triplets give arpeggios that rolling, "Indian" lilt — in this lesson you'll learn 11 piano arpeggio exercises that explore the triplet and swing feel with almost every permutation. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through Indian-style arpeggios with triplets, building from a fifth-chord study and left-hand bass into basic eighth-note arpeggios, then eighth-note triplets and swing. From there you'll work through four Indian patterns (including a hemiola), six combo patterns mixing triplets with quavers and speed variations, and finish on a Roadhouse Blues feel.
