Learn how to improvise on piano with just two notes and two chords: D minor and A7, with the pillar notes D and A, from your first whole note to enclosures, trills and triplets. Beginner to intermediate, with Jason Zac. Pick two chords, D minor and A7, and keep them pumping in the left hand. Then take just two notes, D and A, and let them be the pillars your melody always comes back to. That is the whole idea: land on a pillar, and everything you play around it sounds like it belongs. We build it one level at a time. Level 0 is the pillar notes in whole notes, half notes and off the beat. Then one note below (the leading tone), one down and one up, trills (including a more Indian trill), repeated cells and swing triplets, runs that connect the two pillars, and finally enclosures. Near the end there is a taste of a blues minor colour over the same two chords, and a way to practise it so you can compose your own little pieces. Play along with the chapters below, pause the video, and try each level before moving on. The same plan works in any minor key once you move the two pillars. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons 🎹 Simple but Effective Piano Improvisation Using Chord Tones as Pillars ➡️ https://youtu.be/xEqm46HKrBw 🎼 Compose & Improvise Better Melodies Using Scale & Chord Tones (Piano) ➡️ https://youtu.be/h2K0ZqkZViw 🎵 5 Things You Didn't Know About the Harmonic Minor Scale (Piano Theory) ➡️ https://youtu.be/i7dU99lBWAk ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ============================= 00:00 - The two-chord performance 01:06 - The left hand: D minor and A7 03:09 - Level 0: the pillar notes D and A 05:03 - Level 1: one below 07:14 - Level 2: one down, one up 08:09 - Level 3: trills 09:31 - Level 4: repeat it, then triplets 10:28 - Level 5: connect the pillars 12:30 - Level 6: enclosures 13:14 - More notes, and a blues minor colour 14:52 - Putting it all together 16:20 - How to practise this ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Lessons ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #PianoImprovisation
Learn to play and count odd time signatures like 5/4, 7/4 and 10/4. Jason breaks down 3 practical methods to feel complex rhythms naturally. Jason demonstrates the difference between simply counting beats versus truly feeling musical cycles. You'll learn beat subdivision techniques, call-and-response phrasing, and accent grouping methods that make odd time signatures as comfortable as 4/4 time. Practice along with examples from Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and the Mission Impossible theme. Discover why thinking in "cycle counts" rather than traditional time signatures helps you compose and improvise more musically, and learn the practical difference between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16 time signatures. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:50 - Introduction & Musical Preview 01:05 - Why Time Signatures Can Be Confusing 02:47 - The Cycle Count Concept Explained 03:53 - Practical Composing Tips 06:55 - Daily Riff Practice Resources 08:29 - Method 1: Beat Division & Subdivision 08:52 - Dividing Beats by 2, 3, and 4 10:01 - 10-Beat Cycle Breakdown 10-Beat Cycle Breakdown 10:06 - A Major Scale in 5-Beat Cycles 10:28 - Scale Drill Practice Exercise 10:52 - Adding Harmony to Odd Time 12:33 - Playing on Subdivisions (E’s and A’s) 16:17 - Straight vs Swing Feel in Odd Time 17:45 - Understanding 5/4 vs 5/8 vs 5/16 19:13 - Method 2: Question & Answer Structure 19:49 - Method 2: Accent Grouping & Phrasing 20:38 - Grouping Large Numbers (10 as 3+3+4) 21:44 - Using Rhythm Syllables (Takita, Takajunu) 21:53 - Using Our Rhythm App 24:35 - Summary: 3 Methods Recap 25:05 - Pink Floyd 7/4 Example Analysis ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #OddTimeSignatures #OddMeter #PianoRhythm
Master advanced rhythm concepts including swing percentages, grouping, accents and meter changes through composition breakdowns. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down complex rhythmic concepts using original compositions, revealing how swing percentages, grouping and accents transform your musical expression. You'll explore swing variations from traditional Chicago blues feel to theatrical lazy swing, learning how percentage swing affects the entire musical narrative. You'll master rhythmic grouping with examples in 7/4, unusual cycle lengths and polyrhythmic patterns. You'll learn advanced techniques including rhythmic anticipation, call-and-response phrasing, and contrasting sections that keep listeners engaged, seeing how composers use rhythm to build tension, release and drama. The lesson emphasises that a solid rhythmic foundation is what enables advanced harmonic and melodic development. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:26 - Introduction & Composition Preview 🎹 01:07 - First Composition: Swing with Lag 01:38 - Swing vs Traditional Time Feel Comparison 02:30 - Displacement of Off-Beats 03:05 - Percentage Swing Explained 04:00 - The Problem with Internet/ MIDI Loops 05:29 - Complex Meter: 6-6-6-9 Breakdown 06:05 - Storytelling vs Poetry in Composition 07:28 - Second Composition: Long Cycle Composition Analysis 07:40 - Counting Method: Head Movement Technique 08:13 - 7/4 Time Signature Exploration 09:42 - Pink Floyd’s Money: Famous 7/4 Example 10:25 - Chapter 15 10:43 - Indian Classical Phrasing: 3 Meets 2 11:20 - Busy vs Lazy Contrast Technique 12:33 - Third Composition: Double Time vs Straight Time Sections 13:34 - 6/8 vs 6/4: Which Is It? 🤔 14:47 - Call and Response: 5 + 7 Structure 15:55 - Importance of Drummer Collaboration 16:20 - Fourth Composition: Rhythmic Anticipation Technique 16:33 - Starting on One, Resolving Off Beat 17:28 - 4-3-3-3-3 Grouping Pattern 20:05 - Verse Phrasing vs Chorus Simplicity 20:48 - Making Simple Music Unpredictable 22:36 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #SwingFeel #RhythmicGrouping #OddTimeSignatures
Master rhythm through accent grouping, phrasing and beat divisions beyond basic time signatures. Knowing whether a song is in 7/8, 5/4 or 4/4 is just the beginning. To truly excel as an improviser, composer, arranger or producer, you need to understand accent grouping, phrasing and beat divisions. The lesson demonstrates original compositions in various time signatures including 27/8, 15/8, 9/8 and 4/4, showing how rhythmic grouping inspires melodic and harmonic ideas. A 4/4 bar contains 16 semiquavers, which most people group as 4+4+4+4. But you can group it as 5+4+3+3 or any combination that equals 16, completely changing the feel while staying in time. Think of rhythm like storytelling. Some sentences are long, some are short, but everything stays in tempo. Beat divisions are equally crucial: the same composition can use triplets in one section and semiquavers in another, and understanding the difference between swing and straight feel transforms how you approach rhythm. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #AccentGrouping #OddMeter #RhythmTraining
Understand the difference between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16, and learn to count and feel odd meters. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music explores how each of these odd time signatures feels, counts and functions in real music — because 5/4 is not simply the same as 5/8 or 5/16. You'll learn how to count and feel odd meters correctly, use subdivisions, accents and phrasing in 5/4, write riffs and short cycles in 5/8, and apply busy rhythmic textures in 5/16. You'll also compare them to Indian 'five-beat' grooves, use polymetric combinations (like 5/16 with 4/4), and learn to compose and practise effectively in odd meters. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 01:10 - Great 5/4 Songs 03:27 - Distinguishing Between 5/4, 5/8, 5/16 05:04 - How Can 5/4 Be Written? 06:52 - 5/4 Time Signature 07:47 - How Is 5/4 Similar to 4/4? 09:33 - Creating a Composition in 5/4 11:11 - 5/4 Divided into 4 Units 13:46 - Grouping 10/8 16:14 - 5/8 Time Signature 18:38 - 5/4 vs 5/8 22:15 - 5/16 Time Signature 23:08 - 5/16 with Semiquavers 24:24 - Aligning 5/4 & 5/16 25:07 - Getting 5/16 in a 5/4 Context 25:59 - Feeling of 5/8 26:25 - Polymetric Scenario 28:15 - Using 5/4 in Different Ways 29:19 - Understanding 3/8 30:04 - Dividing 3/8 into 3/4 (Dotted Notes) 31:29 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #OddTimeSignatures #TimeSignatures #MusicTheory
Want to compose original music but don't know where to begin? Flip the usual approach and start with rhythm — using accents, beat divisions and time signatures as your seed. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music flips the traditional songwriting approach by starting with rhythm instead of melody or harmony, showing how accents, beat divisions and time signatures become powerful seeds for composing. You'll explore unpredictable subdivisions, Konnakol-inspired grooves and metric modulations that give your phrases a strong rhythmic identity on the piano. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:24 - How we normally compose music 01:43 - What are the Properties of Sound? 01:57 - Pitch - Low & High 02:31 - 2. Every way to break a beat on the piano — triplets, semiquavers, quintuplets and more — so you can subdivide the pulse with total freedom. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks through the many ways a single beat can be divided, from familiar triplets and sixteenths to less common groupings like quintuplets. You'll hear how each subdivision feels and sounds, and learn how to count and play them cleanly so you can choose the right rhythmic flavour for any passage. It's a thorough rhythm lesson that expands your timing vocabulary and gives you confident control over the beat at the piano. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 01:11 - Slicing up the Beat 01:52 - The Actual Beat Level 03:08 - Access to the Subdivisions 05:44 - Let’s Get Cracking! 07:00 - The Container Analogy 07:19 - Picking which subdivisions to play 07:47 - Practice Scales in Thirds 08:25 - Dividing by 3 - Triplets 09:49 - 2 Compartments using Triplets 10:41 - Focussing on the “a” 14:38 - Hitting at the “&” of the Triplet 17:23 - Semiquaver Divisions 18:39 - G Minor Melody 19:12 - Slamming the “a”s 19:50 - Focussing on the accents 21:57 - the “e” hit point 23:48 - Quintuplets 27:46 - Revision ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #BeatDivision #Triplets #Quintuplets

Forget being limited to diatonic chords — 'ChordTrees' let you connect any notes with surprising, fresh harmony. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches you to harmonise music using chords that aren't limited to a single major or minor scale. In this unique approach called 'ChordTrees', you'll pick three random notes and connect them melodically using all the possible triads that share the landing note — opening up fresh harmonic options you'd miss with traditional chord theory. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #Harmony #ChordTrees #MusicTheory

A flowing left-hand arpeggio is what makes a ballad sound full and emotional — in this lesson you'll build 5 left-hand patterns over a long progression and pair each one with a singing melody. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music uses a rather long chord progression with a traditional "ballad style" melody to develop a variety of left-hand arpeggio patterns. With simple displacement and voicing tricks, each pattern gets its own character — then you layer the melody on top of all five, including a 16th-note arpeggio variation. The result is a left hand that carries the harmony and momentum on its own, freeing your right hand to sing — the heart of beautiful solo-piano ballad playing. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎶 All our Arpeggios lessons (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH 🙌🏼 All our Hand Independence Exercises (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-On4vodpAoZqTlWDCS5jv7 🖖🏽 The All-in-One Finger Exercise ➡️ https://youtu.be/OB8c3TZU8kM ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:47 Introduction 01:52 Scale for the Exercise 03:13 Chords 07:50 Arpeggio Pattern 1 08:58 Arpeggio Pattern 2 10:14 Arpeggio Pattern 3 11:28 Arpeggio Pattern 4 12:54 Arpeggio Pattern 5 14:59 Melody 17:16 Melody + Pattern 1 19:48 Melody + Pattern 2 22:35 16th Notes Arpeggio 23:28 Melody + Pattern 3 25:26 Melody + Pattern 4 28:58 Melody + Pattern 5 32:35 Summary 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #LeftHandPiano #PianoArpeggios #BalladPiano

In this music theory tutorial, I teach you two "tried & tested" ways to figure out chords for a song in real time, using clever music theory concepts, standard chord progressions and cadences. We take a melody in F major and harmonise it first with respect to the melody notes, looking at weak and strong beats. Then, without considering the melody, we use classical cadences (authentic, deceptive and plagal), jazz 2-5-1 cadences and the four pop chords in cyclic order (1-5-6-4, 5-6-4-1, 6-4-1-5, 4-1-5-6). 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 Performance 00:26 Introduction 01:51 Melody on F major 03:15 Two Ways of Harmonising the Melody 04:10 What are WEAK and STRONG beats? 05:23 Harmonising w.r.t. Piano improvisation feels impossible until you anchor it to one simple left-hand pattern — in this play-along lesson you'll build melodies, call-and-response phrases and rhythmic variations one layer at a time. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music starts you off with a steady left-hand arpeggio, then opens up the right hand to explore melody, dynamics and dialogue. Along the way you'll grow real hand independence and learn how to write melodies for different moods, finishing by singing a phrase and playing it back.
