Part 2 of our thirds exercise series. Climb the G major scale in thirds and sharpen your semiquaver rhythm feel. The exercise uses G major and G harmonic minor, where the augmented second gives the harmonic minor its wider leap, and works on both closed thirds and spread thirds. The rhythm patterns use 16th notes, dotted notes, tied notes and rests in 4/4, with one rhythm figure for descending thirds and another for ascending thirds, starting from different scale degrees each time. For the left hand there are three options: hold the pulse on the starting note, mirror the right hand in thirds, or play the scale notes underneath the right-hand thirds.
Topics:
Part 1 of our thirds exercise breakdown — G major and G harmonic minor scales worked in diatonic thirds with two rhythm patterns. Practice this daily. We also cover three left-hand approaches: holding the pulse on the starting note, mirroring the right hand in thirds, or playing the scale notes underneath the thirds in the right hand.
Learn to practise piano thirds in G major and G harmonic minor with unique ascending and descending rhythm patterns for both hands. In this piano lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through a comprehensive exercise on thirds using two essential scales — G major and G harmonic minor. This is a scale-practice drill with a twist: unique rhythm patterns built into every ascent and descent. You'll learn how thirds are formed by writing scales in a circle and skipping notes, plus how the augmented second interval in the harmonic minor creates that signature three-step leap. We break down both closed thirds and spread thirds, giving intermediate pianists a real technical workout. The rhythm patterns include 16th notes, dotted notes, tied notes, and rests — organised in a 4/4 pulse. You'll practise descending thirds with one rhythm figure and ascending thirds with another, starting from different scale degrees each time. This retrains your brain to think of scales beyond just root-to-root, which is essential for improvisation and sight reading. We also cover three different left-hand approaches: holding the pulse on the starting note, mirroring the right hand with carbon-copy thirds, or playing linear scale notes underneath the thirds in the right hand. For advanced players, Jason introduces spread third voicings that produce beautiful triad harmonisations across both hands. Practise minimum three scales a week, count out loud, move your body with the pulse, and enjoy building real technical fluency at the piano. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) - https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🏡 Visit our Channel for more Tutorials & Performances - https://geni.us/NathanielYouTube ============================= ▶️ Related Videos & Playlists 🎬 Major Esque vs Minor Esque — 8 Scales Explained (Part 1) - https://youtu.be/bmy_bXpE900 🎯 Major-Esque Scales You NEED To Know (Part 2) - https://youtu.be/9aKo3JsXkMo 🔑 Minor-Esque Scales Decoded: Exotic to Traditional (Part 3) - https://youtu.be/_DbME-fKHiI 💡 Understand Any Scale Instantly: Major-esque & Minor-esque Framework (full lesson) - https://youtu.be/M88ABjQn0Lo 📂 Scales & Modes - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_8KkjOUBofqzyhbgGkROE- ============================= 🎓 Learn Music With Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac: https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) categorised by skill level, topic & genre all in one place: https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com ⏳ Chapter markers 00:00 - Performance 00:28 - Introduction 🎹 00:54 - Ascending & Descending Thirds 01:24 - Why Practise Thirds? 01:39 - What You’ll Learn in This Lesson 02:21 - The Two Scales: G Major & G Harmonic Minor 02:38 - Understanding Harmonic Minor 🎼 02:53 - The Augmented 2nd Interval Explained 03:21 - How to Form Thirds: The Circle Method 04:21 - Piano Shapes 04:41 - Part 1: The Descending Rhythm Pattern 🥁 05:17 - Descending from different points 06:32 - Counting 16th Notes: 1 e and a 07:23 - Applying the Rhythm to G Major Thirds 07:59 - Left Hand Option 1: Hold the Pulse 09:22 - Left Hand Option 2: Carbon Copy Both Hands 10:16 - Left Hand Option 3: Linear Scale Descent 11:01 - All 3 LH Patterns 11:27 - Descending Thirds in G Harmonic Minor 13:04 - Both Hands Carbon Copy Practice 14:05 - The Ascending Rhythm Pattern 🎵 15:09 - G Major Thirds Ascending 16:01 - Ascending from Every Scale Degree 16:58 - G Harmonic Minor Ascending Thirds 17:12 - Retraining Your Scale Knowledge 🧠 18:05 - Fingering Tips for Thirds 18:20 - Intro to Spread Thirds (Advanced) 🎼 18:50 - Harmonising with Spread & Closed Thirds Together 19:36 - Jumbling the Order for Creative Practice 20:01 - Homework: Three Scales a Week 20:20 - Recap & Final Thoughts 💰 Donate on PayPal: https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 👨👩👧👦 Follow me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes: music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music: https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoThirds #RhythmDrill #PianoTechnique
Learn to play piano thirds & sixths cleanly with legato and staccato articulation across A major, E♭ major and harmonic minor scales. In this piano lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through a focused articulation workout using thirds and sixths across major and harmonic minor scales. If you've been struggling with uneven parallel intervals, this exercise will tighten up your finger control and coordination. We start by mapping out the third intervals in A major — visualising every white-black, black-white and white-white combination on the keys. Then we work through four articulation styles: pure legato, pure staccato, legato-staccato pairs, and staccato-legato pairs. Each one trains a different muscle and a different listening skill. Next we shift to E♭ major to challenge your fingering on a flat-key scale, and then dive into the harmonic minor versions of both keys. The augmented 2nd interval in harmonic minor makes the thirds noticeably trickier — exactly why it's such a valuable practice tool. Finally, we explore sixth intervals as inverted thirds and finish with a two-hand harmonisation exercise where the left hand harmonises the right hand in sixths, giving you real harmonic awareness while practising technique. Throughout the lesson we focus on steady time, dynamics, and smooth voice-leading. Learn to harmonize piano and voice using thirds in G harmonic minor. Build musicianship with tenor and alto harmony exercises. Learn the art of piano and voice harmony with this comprehensive lesson on coordinating melody and harmony between two instruments. You'll discover how to play piano melody while singing harmonic thirds, just like legendary groups such as The Beatles, ABBA, and Queen. This lesson focuses on G harmonic minor scale harmonization using tenor and alto thirds. You'll learn the difference between upper thirds (tenor) and lower thirds (alto), understanding why tenor harmony is traditionally played an octave below the soprano melody for optimal sound quality. Practice exercises include ascending and descending scale harmonization, where your right hand plays the melody while your voice sings the corresponding third intervals. The lesson covers both major and minor thirds within the harmonic minor structure, helping you develop crucial ear training and coordination skills. Advanced musicians will appreciate the theoretical foundation covering heptatonic scale harmonization and the practical application of these concepts in performance settings. This technique builds overall musicianship and prepares you for more complex vocal and instrumental arrangements. Practice all 7 modes of the major scale with right hand exercises and left hand accompaniment. In this lesson, you learn to practice all seven modes of the major scale by staying on one root and shaping each mode with both close and spread right hand positions. The right hand works on expansion, compression, finger control and clear interval awareness while the left hand builds strength through scale movement and fifth chords. The tritone for each mode is explained so you understand how harmony shifts across Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. You will also learn the key notes that define every mode and how to highlight them while ascending and descending. By the end of the lesson, you will have seven complete exercises to practice and a strong understanding of modal theory in a practical, musical way. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Demonstration 00:35 - Scales & Modes Exercise 00:51 - The 7 Modes of the Major 01:11 - One Key and Many Modes 01:56 - The Skill levels for this Lesson 02:40 - Close & Spread Scalar Motion 03:13 - Techniques for Pianists to work on 03:45 - What we will learn? 04:40 - The Ionian or Major 06:07 - LH playing the Pulse 06:36 - G Major Scale in the Left Hand 07:22 - Ascending & Descending 07:44 - 5th Chords in the Bass 08:13 - LH with Minims 09:18 - The Dorian Mode 09:40 - With respect to Minor & Major - Raising & Lowering 09:56 - The Unique notes of the Dorian 11:00 - Climbing the Left Hand 11:19 - Perfect Fifths & the Tritone 12:27 - The 3rd Degree - Phrygian 13:16 - Adjusting to 1-2b-4-5-7b 14:05 - Fifth chords 14:53 - The Lydian 16:33 - Mixolydian 17:49 - Aeolian (6th degree) - Natural Minor 18:49 - Aeolian with Fifths in the LH 19:33 - The Locrian 20:38 - Climbing the Locrian Ladder ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoModes #FingerExercises #PianoScales

A single major or minor triad can sound rich and beautiful on its own — in this lesson you'll learn how thirds, cadences, voicings and extended harmony turn one "boring" chord into endless colour. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows how to dress up a static tonic chord using diatonic thirds, cadences, a root-and-fifth pivot with spread thirds, grace notes, turns and riff-style chord melodies. From there you'll explore add, suspended and extended chords, plus bonus quartal and quintal voicings. The big payoff: you'll be able to accompany a melody-driven song over an almost-drone background and keep it interesting — all from one chord. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎼 How to Use Cadences - Theory & Technique (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT_sKjWd1c7K_S55cZ15jAKI 🏋🏽 Exercise to Practice Thirds ➡️ https://youtu.be/dKeSBOU_PDo ➕ Add vs Sus vs Extensions ➡️ https://youtu.be/o2hj9IfeGkA 🪗 Chord Voicing with Quartals & More ➡️ https://youtu.be/r8B8dTIQX1I ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:16 Tackling a "Boring" Tonic Chord 02:54 Using Diatonic Thirds 06:05 Application in Blues 07:19 Using Cadences 11:13 Root & Fifth Pivot with Spread Thirds 14:57 Chord Melodies - Grace Notes & Turns 16:22 Chord Melodies - Riffs 19:03 Add, Suspended & Extensions 23:32 Bonus - Quartal & Quintal Voicing 26:36 Quintals for the Left Hand 28:25 Revision 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoVoicings #ChordExtensions #Cadences
Country piano comes alive in the connections between chords — learn stepwise walk-ups and walk-downs through the I–IV–V, dressed up with grace notes and ghost notes. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches a country piano exercise that moves into each of the I–IV–V chords with passing harmonic movement, all in a traditional Waltz (3/4) meter on Bb major. You'll build a left-hand walking bass, harmonise with thirds in the right hand, stack roots and fifths, add off-beat rhythm, and spice things up with grace notes and ghost notes — then apply it to tunes like Amazing Grace and Twinkle Twinkle. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:14 Introduction 00:47 Traditional Chords to Country 02:12 Bb Major 02:52 The Chord Progression 03:43 Counting Waltz 3/4 with Eighth Notes 05:05 Left-Hand Walking Bass 07:39 Right Hand Chords with Bass Line 08:11 Harmonizing with Thirds in Right Hand 11:12 Stacking Root and Fifth 14:06 Off Beat Rhythm in Left Hand 17:12 Amazing Grace variation 17:56 Twinkle Twinkle 18:07 Happy Birthday 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🤠 'Old School' Country Rhythm Essentials ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg2mvAcIyBg 🔄 Inversion Practice ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M4R6en-eRw 🥁 Rhythm Concepts & Patterns (Playlist) ➡️ https://geni.us/RhythmChops ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #CountryPiano #PianoWalkUps #PianoFills
Build piano hand independence and learn interval theory at the same time with one inspiring Modern Pop (EDM) exercise using just 4 notes. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music teaches a Modern Pop piano part that stacks intervals of thirds and fifths from only 4 notes, then layers in essential theory including how to form those intervals and how to transpose the idea to other scales. The heart of the lesson is developing hand independence using rhythmic ratios — 1:4, 4:1, 1:3, 3:1, 2:4 and 4:2 — before stacking fifths and thirds across both hands and finishing with three-note 'cluster' improvisation. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:20 Introduction 01:47 B-flat Major Essential Theory 03:41 Interval Preparation 04:47 Forming Thirds Intervals 06:04 Forming Fifth Intervals 07:51 Modern Pop Piano Exercise 10:14 Correct fingering 11:35 Exercise with Octaves 12:25 Hand Ratios 12:38 1:4 14:11 4:1 15:00 1:3 & 3:1 16:19 2:4 17:02 4:2 18:14 Stacking of 5th in Left Hand 20:30 Stacking of 5th in Right Hand 24:10 Stacking of 3rds in Right Hand 25:50 Transposing to other Scales 28:42 Clusters of 3 notes 31:27 Conclusion 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎡 The Circle of Fifths (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-FzWCgbLnhEXKrulYDxLQJ 🤚 Hand Independence ➡️ https://geni.us/HandIndependence 🎼 Music Theory ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HandIndependence #Intervals #PopPiano

Combining a left-hand bass line with a right-hand melody in thirds is a powerful way to develop serious hand independence on the piano — and this lesson builds it piece by piece. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through a minor-key piece that brings together bass, chords and an ornamented melody in thirds. After a quick refresher on the minor scale, you'll learn the bass line and chord progression, then add a right-hand melody in thirds with ornaments. From there you'll place a pulse in the left hand and add dotted notes, with a clear explanation of the dotted quaver along the way. A beginner-friendly easy version is included so you can build up to the full arrangement. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 01:03 Introduction 03:15 Essential Music Theory - Minor Scale 03:42 Bass Line 04:10 Chord Progression 04:33 The Bass Line 09:06 The Melody in Thirds with Ornaments 13:42 Pulse in the Left Hand 15:56 Dotted Notes in the Left Hand 16:32 What is a Dotted Quaver? 18:57 Beginner (Easy) Version 19:58 Conclusion & Revision ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HandIndependence #BassLine #PianoExercise
Practising scales in parallel, contrary and similar motion is the routine that finally makes both hands strong, even and independent on the piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shares his approach to learning scales properly, covering major and harmonic minor scales with a full set of motion exercises. This one modern pop piano exercise trains spread voicings, diatonic intervals and odd-time playing all at once — a complete chord workout in a single progression. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music builds a modern pop chord exercise around the progression Bm – D – F#m – E. You'll start by understanding spread (open) voicing, apply it to the progression, then add a 3/4 rhythm pattern and work on dynamics. From there you'll explore diatonic intervals and finish with an odd-time-signature practice section that ties the whole exercise together. It's a focused drill that levels up your voicing, interval awareness and rhythmic confidence at the same time. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 00:32 What is Spread (Open Voicing) 03:58 Bm - D - F#m - E (Chord Progression) 07:50 Rhythm Pattern using 3/4 09:46 Working on Piano Dynamics 12:47 Exploring Diatonic Intervals 19:17 Odd Time Signature Practice 23:25 Revision & Conclusion ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #SpreadVoicings #PopPiano #PianoExercises
