Take one note — D — and the six chords that contain it: D major, D minor, G major, G minor, B♭ major and B minor. One chord alone lets you imagine many scales. Two chords narrow it down. Three chords and the scale is obvious. That is how chord charts really work: you read chords and you interpret scales. A chord is an unfinished scale. A triad gives you three notes; a scale needs seven. So the four notes you add are up to you — and that is where every scale comes from. In this lesson I build scales the unconventional way: not tone–tone–semitone, not from the modes, but from chords. One chord leaves four notes open to your imagination — D major alone gives you D major, D mixolydian, D lydian, D harmonic major, and it is also the dominant of G harmonic minor and G melodic minor. Two chords narrow it down to one or two notes: D major with G major gives you D major, D mixolydian, or G harmonic major if you make G the tonic; D major with G minor gives you the harmonic minors, melodic minors and harmonic majors; D major with B♭ major fits only one scale, and it is a beautiful one. Three chords and the scale is decided — D, G and B minor live in D major and in G major at the same time, and the functions simply swap. That is how chord charts work. You read chords and you interpret scales. You are not locked to a key signature — you let the chord, or the cadence, or the trio, dictate the scale. ✏️ Correction (05:45): I call the G minor triad “the fifth, or the dominant, of D Phrygian”. G is the FOURTH degree of D Phrygian (D E♭ F G A B♭ C) — the fifth is A — so G minor is the subdominant, the iv, of that scale. The very next sentence has it right: start from the chord and choose tonic, dominant or subdominant. Learn old-school ear training by singing intervals first and checking on piano. Build real relative pitch across major, minor & modal scales. Most musicians practise ear training the wrong way — by playing along with the piano or guitar while singing. That's mimicking, not hearing. In this lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shares the old-school approach: sing the note FIRST, then play your instrument only to check the answer. We begin by getting Sa wired into your system using a G drone or tanpura, then work through the full major scale using Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni). You can also use movable-DO solfège or simple syllables like la-la or na-na — whatever keeps your brain untangled. From there we expand into Mixolydian, Dorian, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor — each built by altering just a few intervals from the major scale. You'll practise singing close intervals first (Sa-Re-Sa), then widen the gap step by step (Sa-Ga-Sa, Sa-Ma-Sa, Sa-Pa-Sa) both above and below the tonic. This builds true relative pitch — the ability to hear how one note relates to another, the foundation of every melody. This isn't just an ear training drill. It's a 3D workout combining ear, theory and technique — because if you sing the right note but press the wrong key, you've still got work to do. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and try the exercise in different keys (find your preferred vocal key!). Once the order is comfortable, jumble the intervals to make it more musical and creative. Flip the traditional roles — put a captivating bass melody in the left hand and let the right hand drive the rhythm. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to flip the usual piano roles by creating compelling bass melodies in the left hand while the right hand provides rhythmic support, breaking down stepwise and leapwise melodic motion. You'll learn the differences between upper-register and bass-register melody construction, using D minor and D hybrid minor scales, and when to use stepwise motion versus larger leaps for maximum impact. The lesson covers three right-hand rhythm patterns — pulse, tresillo and 3+5 accents — while the left hand develops from simple chord roots to melodic lines with octaves, fifths and thirds, moving through progressions like D minor, G minor 6th, E minor 7b5 and A7 variations. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:44 - Introduction & Unconventional Bass Melody Preview 🎵 01:05 - Why Bass Register Melody is Different 01:19 - Stepwise vs Leapwise Motion Explained 02:15 - The Role of Rhythm in Bass Melody 02:26 - Right Hand vs Left Hand Role Reversal 04:51 - D Hybrid Minor Scale Introduction 05:26 - Harmonic Minor vs Natural Minor Differences 06:23 - Chord Progression Breakdown: D Minor Foundation 06:36 - G Minor 6th Chord Explanation 06:52 - Right Hand Pattern 1: Pulse Rhythm 07:02 Right Hand Pattern 2: Tresillo Technique 07:39 - E Minor 7th Flat 5 Chord Theory 07:53 - A7 Resolution Back to D Minor 09:20 - Right Hand Pattern 3: 3+5 Accent Combo 11:04 - Left Hand Basics: Chord Roots with Octaves 14:18 - LH Pattern 2 14:50 - Leapwise Motion Bass Line Construction 15:35 - Stepwise Motion Bass Alternatives 16:28 - Chord Tone Selection Strategy 17:48 - Dotted Rhythm Feel Modifications 18:52 - Accessing Off-Beat Rhythms 20:14 - Creative Passing Notes Technique 21:28 - Perforamce Melody Breakdown 22:35 - Bringing Both Hands Together 24:07 - Complete Melody Performance - Slow Tempo 25:16 - Role Reversal Concept Summary 25:30 - Engine vs Driver Hand Philosophy 25:36 Rhythm Modifications and Feel Changes 26:38 - Composed Melody Final Performance ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #BassMelody #LeftHandPiano #PianoTutorial
Learn piano basslines with 10 grooves and rhythm patterns. This piano bassline tutorial shows how to turn an F minor pentatonic pattern into disco, salsa, funk, and other grooves using quavers, sixteenth notes, triplets, and a steady right-hand chord pulse. Learn to create multiple groovy F minor pentatonic bassline variations across quavers, sixteenth notes and triplets, with a steady right-hand pulse of chords. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the secrets of creating groovy, danceable basslines on piano. You'll learn why dividing beats into more subdivisions while playing less creates the perfect groove that makes people want to move. You'll discover 10+ distinct rhythm variations of the same bassline, each transformed by a different time feel — from simple quavers to complex sixteenth-note patterns and even triplets. You'll explore the essential ingredients of a compelling bassline: root, octave, fifth and minor third, plus embellishment notes that add flavour without overwhelming the groove. You'll also develop rock-solid timing with pulse chords in the right hand, and learn cluster chords, floating thirds and melodic licks that complement your bassline. The lesson emphasises body movement and internal pulse over metronome dependence. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:46 - Introduction & Bassline Preview 🎹 01:35 - What the Right Hand can do? 02:54 - Heptatonic Scales - Natural Minor & Dorian 03:28 - Essential Ingredients of Groovy Basslines 05:18 - Essential Ingredients of Groovy Basslines 06:03 - The Groove Formula: Divide More, Play Less 06:42 - Foundational Notes: Root, Octave & Fifth 07:49 - Adding Minor Third & Embellishment Notes 09:21 - Right Hand Pulse Chord Options 11:26 - Cluster Chords Technique 12:59 - Preparing the Right Hand 14:04 - Pattern 1: Simple Quaver Bassline 15:45 - Pattern 2: Displaced Third Variation 16:59 - Pattern 3: Introducing Sixteenth Notes 18:12 - Pattern 4: Advanced 16th Note Rhythm 19:02 - Pattern 5: Subdivision Variation 19:56 - Son Clave Rhythm Application 🥁 20:16 - Tresillo Pattern Breakdown 22:31 - Salsa-Style Bassline Variation 23:50 - Triplet Division Concepts ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoBasslines #PianoGroove #RhythmPatterns
Nail all 24 major and minor chords with this chromatic second-inversion piano exercise. Learn voice leading, block chords, arpeggios, smooth chord progressions, and how to practise every major and minor triad across the keyboard. Learn to practise all 12 major and 12 minor chords in second inversion using chromatic voice-leading patterns, block chords and arpeggios. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music unlocks the power of second-inversion triads with a chromatic exercise that covers all 12 major and 12 minor chords, focusing on voice leading that creates smooth, musical progressions. You'll discover why second inversions are so effective for voice leading — with the root in the middle of the chord, you create harmonic movements that sound more sophisticated than root-position progressions. You'll learn to identify major and minor thirds quickly by asking questions like 'C is the major third of which triad?' You'll practise multiple patterns including block chords, high-low-middle-low arpeggios and reinforced-melody techniques. Each chromatic step reveals two chords — one major and one minor — creating 24 total progressions that flow beautifully together while sharpening your ear. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:54 - Introduction to Second Inversion Triads 🎹 01:09 - Why Choose Second Inversion for Voice Leading 01:26 - Understanding Root Position vs Inversions 01:49 - The Chromatic Climbing Exercise Overview 02:17 - Major vs Minor Third Identification 03:24 - Starting with C: Ab Major and A Minor 05:23 - Block Chord Practice Pattern 05:39 - High-Low-Middle-Low Arpeggio Pattern 🎵 05:56 - Reinforcing the Melody Note Technique 06:51 - C# Progression: A Major to Bb Minor 07:49 - Left Hand with Chord Roots 08:24 - D Progression: Bb Major to B Minor 08:47 - D# Progression: B Major to C Minor 09:56 - E Progression: C Major to C# Minor 10:19 - F Progression: Db Major to D Minor 11:17 - F# Progression: D Major to Eb Minor 11:36 - G Progression: Eb Major to E Minor 11:49 - G# Progression: E Major to F Minor 12:04 - A Progression: F Major to F# Minor 13:19 - A# Progression: F# Major to G Minor 13:34 - B Progression: G Major to G# Minor 14:10 - Completing the Chromatic Circle 14:35 - Left Hand Root Movement Practice 16:12 - Ear Training with Major/Minor Thirds 16:23 - Chord Trees Composition Concept 🌳 16:41 - Practice Tips for All Skill Levels ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #ChordInversions #PianoTriads #VoiceLeading

Learn rhythmic displacement, anticipation and delay techniques on piano with 3 melodic exercises that build better timing and groove. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to transform simple melodies into groovy, professional-sounding performances through strategic timing shifts. You'll learn three essential melodic patterns in G major, harmonising with thirds to create rich textures. You'll discover how to use your pinky as a pedal tone while developing finger independence, plus how to add alternating eighth notes for that signature rhythmic feel. The core concepts cover anticipation (moving notes before the beat) and delay (moving notes after the beat), progressing from quarter notes to eighth-note subdivisions and advanced sixteenth-note patterns. You'll practise with body movement and Indian swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma) to internalise the rhythm naturally. You'll also explore modal variations including Mixolydian, Dorian and harmonic minor to add sophisticated flavour to your playing. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:41 - Introduction & Lesson Overview 🎹 01:37 - Scale of Exercise 02:24 - Learning the Three Base Melodies 02:25 - Melody 1: Sa Re Ga Ma Pattern 02:56 - Melody 2: The Fifth Degree Approach 03:25 - Melody 3: Lower Seventh Integration 03:38 - Harmonizing with Thirds in Right Hand 04:00 - Understanding Major vs Minor Thirds 05:18 - Singing while Practicing 06:22 - Indian Swaras vs Do-Re-Mi System 06:59 - Adding the Pedal Tone (Pinky G) 08:10 - Left Hand Eighth Note Pattern 09:40 - Counting Technique 10:04 - Rhythmic Displacement Concepts 10:52 - What is Rhythmic Anticipation? 11:31 - What is Rhythmic Delay? 12:11 - Anticipation Exercise - All Three Melodies 14:31 - Delay Exercise - All Three Melodies 15:31 - Mixing Anticipation & Delay 16:55 - Creative Practice Sessions 17:25 - Advanced: Sixteenth Note Subdivisions 17:48 - The E’s and A’s of Beat Division 19:09 - Body Movement for Complex Rhythms 19:40 - G Major to C Major Transition 20:31 - Key Modulations: Root, Fourth, Fifth 20:56 - D Mixolydian Mode 21:25 - A Dorian Exploration 22:02 - Natural Minor vs Harmonic Minor 22:59 - Mixolydian Flat 6 Scale 23:19 - Lesson Summary & Next Steps 24:40 - Practice Schedule Recommendations ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #RhythmicDisplacement #PianoTiming #PianoGroove

Using a systematic approach with static notes (starting on Bb) while other fingers move chromatically and tonally, you'll keep one finger steady while the others create melodic motion. You'll explore chromatic passing notes, rhythmic subdivisions and embellishments in both 4/4 and 3/4 time, progressing from simple quarter-note pulses to syncopated patterns that challenge your finger isolation. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:44 - Introduction to Finger Independence 🎹 03:09 - Setting Up the Static Note (B♭) 03:25 - Basic Quarter Note Pulse Exercise 03:40 - Counting in different Time Signature 04:14 - Root Note G Minor Scale Concept 04:34 - Chromatic Descending Pattern (G-F#-F-E) 04:52 - Tonal Descending Pattern (G-F-E-D) 05:36 - Articulation: Staccato vs Legato 06:41 - Adding Chromatic Embellishments 🎵 07:26 - Targeting the ‘And’ of Beat 1 08:46 - 3/4 Time Chromatic Passing 09:12 - Targeting the ‘And’ of Beat 2 09:44 - Targeting the ‘And’ of Beat 3 10:40 - Targeting the ‘And’ of Beat 4 11:20 - Adding Extra Chromatic Notes 12:13 - Complex Rhythm Patterns 13:17 - Working with Other Target Notes 15:08 - Table Exercises Without Piano ✋ 15:48 - Practice Tips & Concentration 16:21 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #FingerIndependence #PianoTechnique #PianoExercises
Build real hand independence with multiple left-hand patterns and right-hand displacement over the Andalusian cadence. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music helps you master piano hand independence with rhythm patterns, chord progressions and displacement exercises, built on the Andalusian cadence (D minor – C major – Bb major – A major). Left-hand patterns include quarter-note pulse and eighth notes, the oom-pah pattern (alternating bass-chord), a jumping-jacks rhythm (outer-inner sixteenth notes), an arpeggio pattern (low-high-middle-high), and stride piano technique. Right-hand exercises include Sa-re-ga (1-2-3) and Ga-re-sa (3-2-1) melodic patterns, displacement at different beat subdivisions, and syncopation — covering time feel, body movement and pulse, wrist motion for eighth notes, and a relaxed hand position. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:36 - Introduction & What is Hand Independence 00:47 - Challenges in Hand Coordination 01:15 - Time Feel & Beat Division Concepts 02:58 - Two Handed Piano Essentials 03:36 - D Minor Chord Foundation 03:48 - Andalusian Cadence 04:02 - Working Out Pulse & Time Feel 04:48 - Quarter Notes & Eighth Notes Practice 06:13 - Jumping Jacks Rhythm (16th Notes) 06:45 - Arpeggio Pattern - Low High Middle Hig 08:03 - Stride Piano Pattern 09:23 - Right Hand Melody 09:39 - Sa-re-ga / Ga-re-sa 10:01 - Combining Right Hand with Left Hand Patterns 10:39 - Ga-Re-Sa of each chord 11:18 - 1 & 2 Hit Points 11:46 - All the LH Patterns with the RH Melody 12:48 - Displacement & Syncopation Practice 13:05 - Hit Points at Different Beat Subdivisions 13:29 - & of 1, On of 2, & of 2 Practice 15:07 - Left Hand block chords 16:50 - Stride with Full Chord Progression 17:41 - Improvisation & Sing and Play 17:54 - Practice Routine 18:20 - Improvisation & Sing and Play 19:00 - Ear Training Through Voice 20:22 - Recap & Resources ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #HandIndependence #StridePiano #PianoExercises
Learn how to play 3 left-hand harmonic piano patterns to make chords sound more lush and colourful. Stop playing boring root-fifth-octave patterns in your left hand; these work perfectly for pop, rock, Bollywood and contemporary piano arrangements. First, open 9th voicings built from two stacked perfect fifths, which work with both major and minor in the right hand, practised with the F9 to Eb add9 exercise. Second, floating scale tones with a root-octave anchor in a 3/4 swing pattern. Third, diatonic thirds with a static root, combining F major thirds with the root F for folk-inspired sounds and open major 7th voicings. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:44 - 3 Harmonic Tools for Left Hand 01:20 - The goal of the Left hand for Harmony 01:43 - Need for Width in the Bass Register 02:01 - The Root - Octave Left Hand Support 02:51 - What we’ll learn in this lesson? 04:34 - Spread Ninth Chords 04:57 - Works with both Major & Minor Chords 07:41 - Spread Triads 08:27 - The Ninth Chord Exercise 09:51 - Up a Minor 3rd 10:42 - Fignering for the Left Hand 11:51 - 3/4 Pattern with Swing 12:19 - F Major Floating 13:41 - What could the Bass Movement be? 15:48 - Now for the Minor 16:56 - Modal Modulation 18:12 - Bottom up Approach 19:00 - Anchor with Thirds 19:37 - Combining the Thirds with the Root 20:08 - Drone sound with color 21:20 - Anchor on the Top with Minor 22:13 - Floating from both directions 23:28 - Recapping the lesson and preparing ahead ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #LeftHandPiano #OpenVoicings #PianoAccompaniment
Learn correct fingering for piano triads and inversions to play chord progressions smoothly. The biggest mistake piano players make is thinking about fingering for the current chord only. Instead, you should consider at least two chords together. This lesson teaches you to prepare your fingering based on what comes next, making transitions smooth and effortless. Learn why ring finger should be dedicated to black notes in the upper register, how to position your thumb on black keys without feeling trapped, and why index finger at the edge gives you more control. Practical examples include D major, G major, A minor, Eb major and more, plus left hand root positioning for any chord progression. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:33 - The Correct Fingering for playing a Triad 00:54 - Question often asked by Music Students 01:22 - Guitars and Chord Shapes 01:51 - Similar Chord Shapes 02:49 - The Importance of the Root Position? 03:16 - What we will learn? 04:35 - D Major & its inversions 05:02 - Root Position, Ist and 2nd Inversion 05:43 - 2 note, 3 note & 4 note chords 06:15 - Why Chord Inversions? 06:35 - Proper Voice Leading 07:21 - Shifting to the next chord 08:38 - Fingering Considerations 09:37 - Making the best use of the 5 Fingers 10:16 - Planning for the next chord 11:42 - Shifting from D Major to other Triads 12:47 - What should the Left Hand play? 13:26 - Starting from the Ist Inversion 13:50 - The Challenge of the Thumb 15:06 - Using the Index Finger 15:48 - Index vs Thumb 16:38 - 2nd Inversion of D Major 16:52 - The Ring Finger 20:39 - Chord Randomizer 21:24 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoFingering #ChordInversions #PianoTriads
Practice all 7 modes of the major scale with right hand exercises and left hand accompaniment. In this lesson, you learn to practice all seven modes of the major scale by staying on one root and shaping each mode with both close and spread right hand positions. The right hand works on expansion, compression, finger control and clear interval awareness while the left hand builds strength through scale movement and fifth chords. The tritone for each mode is explained so you understand how harmony shifts across Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. You will also learn the key notes that define every mode and how to highlight them while ascending and descending. By the end of the lesson, you will have seven complete exercises to practice and a strong understanding of modal theory in a practical, musical way. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Demonstration 00:35 - Scales & Modes Exercise 00:51 - The 7 Modes of the Major 01:11 - One Key and Many Modes 01:56 - The Skill levels for this Lesson 02:40 - Close & Spread Scalar Motion 03:13 - Techniques for Pianists to work on 03:45 - What we will learn? 04:40 - The Ionian or Major 06:07 - LH playing the Pulse 06:36 - G Major Scale in the Left Hand 07:22 - Ascending & Descending 07:44 - 5th Chords in the Bass 08:13 - LH with Minims 09:18 - The Dorian Mode 09:40 - With respect to Minor & Major - Raising & Lowering 09:56 - The Unique notes of the Dorian 11:00 - Climbing the Left Hand 11:19 - Perfect Fifths & the Tritone 12:27 - The 3rd Degree - Phrygian 13:16 - Adjusting to 1-2b-4-5-7b 14:05 - Fifth chords 14:53 - The Lydian 16:33 - Mixolydian 17:49 - Aeolian (6th degree) - Natural Minor 18:49 - Aeolian with Fifths in the LH 19:33 - The Locrian 20:38 - Climbing the Locrian Ladder ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoModes #FingerExercises #PianoScales

Learn to practice major & minor chords using cadences and the circle of fifths. In this piano lesson, we'll explore how major and minor chords connect through cadences and the circle of fifths. You'll learn how to identify scales and modes based on simple two-chord progressions like V–I (authentic) and IV–I (plagal). We'll also see how combinations like major to major, major to minor, minor to major and minor to minor create unique sounds: Major to Major gives the Ionian (Major scale), Major to Minor a Harmonic Minor feel, Minor to Major the Mixolydian, and Minor to Minor the Aeolian (Natural Minor). Finally, we'll apply this to real piano practice with inversions, smooth transitions, and a creative way to harmonize any scale. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:32 - Cadences & Circle of Fifths 01:32 - Revision of the Circle of Fifths 01:49 - Perfect 5th Galore 02:13 - Perfect 4th motion 02:41 - Cadences 04:06 - Plagal Cadence 05:19 - Binary Perspective - Major & Minor Triads 05:54 - V to I - Major Scale 06:58 - V to i - Harmonic Minor 08:10 - Highlighting the Scale 08:38 - Other scales wrt this Cadence 09:14 - v to I - Mixolydian 10:07 - v to i - Natural Minor 11:17 - Plagal Cadence - 4 to 1 12:26 - Major to Minor - Dorian 13:13 - iv - I (Charukeshi) - Mixolydian b6 14:07 - Minor to Minor 14:46 - Aeolian vs Harmonic Minor 16:05 - Think and Play 16:38 - Practice Goals ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoScales #Cadences #CircleOfFifths
Train your ear and hands to tell apart triplets, semiquavers and clave feels on piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music shows you how to execute rhythms that sound almost identical but feel completely different. You'll explore triplets, semiquavers (16ths), swing and clave patterns, and how to apply them over scales, chords and even while singing. You'll learn how triplets create a flowing feel versus the forward drive of semiquavers, how to use konnakol to subdivide rhythms, and how to practise with a metronome at 70-80 bpm with accents and syncopation. You'll also apply the drills on major and minor scales and explore Son, Rumba and Bossa claves. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 00:32 - 1- Beat Structure 00:53 - 2- Beat Rhythm 01:34 - 1-Beat Division → Quavers (Eighth Notes) 03:36 - Add Traditional Swing Feel 04:54 - Straight vs Swing Explained 05:12 - Dividing the Beat into 4 (Semiquavers) 06:20 - How Swing is felt 06:53 - 1 Beat and 2 hits 08:57 - Dotted Feel vs Straight 09:17 - Dividing by 2 & 4 10:16 - Semiquaver vs Quaver Pulse 12:12 - Swinging the Semiquaver Feel 12:46 - Triplet Feel 13:03 - Semiquavers: Swing vs Straight 13:17 - Quaver Feel in Context 14:52 - Applying Rhythms Over 2 Beats 15:19 - The Famous Tresillo 16:29 - Quarter-Note Triplets 16:54 - D Minor Triplet Example 17:54 - Dividing the Triplet by 3 19:00 - Understanding the Dotted Quaver Feel 19:24 - Tresillo (Revisited) 19:52 - Triplet Variations 20:06 - Rhythm Patterns Across a Bar 20:34 - Son Clave 21:20 - Rumba Clave 22:49 - Bossa Clave 24:08 - Capping off the three Claves 25:11 - Recap & Wrap-Up 26:21 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 +91 77604 56847 (Mobile & WhatsApp) 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Triplets #ClaveRhythm #PianoRhythm
