Piano Left-Hand Harmony: 9th Chords, Walking Bass & Diatonic Thirds
Learn how to play 3 left-hand harmonic piano patterns to make chords sound more lush and colourful. Stop playing boring root-fifth-octave patterns in your left hand; these work perfectly for pop, rock, Bollywood and contemporary piano arrangements. First, open 9th voicings built from two stacked perfect fifths, which work with both major and minor in the right hand, practised with the F9 to Eb add9 exercise. Second, floating scale tones with a root-octave anchor in a 3/4 swing pattern. Third, diatonic thirds with a static root, combining F major thirds with the root F for folk-inspired sounds and open major 7th voicings. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Performance 00:44 - 3 Harmonic Tools for Left Hand 01:20 - The goal of the Left hand for Harmony 01:43 - Need for Width in the Bass Register 02:01 - The Root - Octave Left Hand Support 02:51 - What we’ll learn in this lesson? 04:34 - Spread Ninth Chords 04:57 - Works with both Major & Minor Chords 07:41 - Spread Triads 08:27 - The Ninth Chord Exercise 09:51 - Up a Minor 3rd 10:42 - Fignering for the Left Hand 11:51 - 3/4 Pattern with Swing 12:19 - F Major Floating 13:41 - What could the Bass Movement be? 15:48 - Now for the Minor 16:56 - Modal Modulation 18:12 - Bottom up Approach 19:00 - Anchor with Thirds 19:37 - Combining the Thirds with the Root 20:08 - Drone sound with color 21:20 - Anchor on the Top with Minor 22:13 - Floating from both directions 23:28 - Recapping the lesson and preparing ahead ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #LeftHandPiano #OpenVoicings #PianoAccompaniment
