    Master rhythm through accent grouping, phrasing and beat divisions beyond basic time signatures. Knowing whether a song is in 7/8, 5/4 or 4/4 is just the beginning. To truly excel as an improviser, composer, arranger or producer, you need to understand accent grouping, phrasing and beat divisions. The lesson demonstrates original compositions in various time signatures including 27/8, 15/8, 9/8 and 4/4, showing how rhythmic grouping inspires melodic and harmonic ideas. A 4/4 bar contains 16 semiquavers, which most people group as 4+4+4+4. But you can group it as 5+4+3+3 or any combination that equals 16, completely changing the feel while staying in time. Think of rhythm like storytelling. Some sentences are long, some are short, but everything stays in tempo. Beat divisions are equally crucial: the same composition can use triplets in one section and semiquavers in another, and understanding the difference between swing and straight feel transforms how you approach rhythm. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #AccentGrouping #OddMeter #RhythmTraining

    Understand the difference between 5/4, 5/8 and 5/16, and learn to count and feel odd meters. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music explores how each of these odd time signatures feels, counts and functions in real music — because 5/4 is not simply the same as 5/8 or 5/16. You'll learn how to count and feel odd meters correctly, use subdivisions, accents and phrasing in 5/4, write riffs and short cycles in 5/8, and apply busy rhythmic textures in 5/16. You'll also compare them to Indian 'five-beat' grooves, use polymetric combinations (like 5/16 with 4/4), and learn to compose and practise effectively in odd meters. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 00:00 - Introduction 01:10 - Great 5/4 Songs 03:27 - Distinguishing Between 5/4, 5/8, 5/16 05:04 - How Can 5/4 Be Written? 06:52 - 5/4 Time Signature 07:47 - How Is 5/4 Similar to 4/4? 09:33 - Creating a Composition in 5/4 11:11 - 5/4 Divided into 4 Units 13:46 - Grouping 10/8 16:14 - 5/8 Time Signature 18:38 - 5/4 vs 5/8 22:15 - 5/16 Time Signature 23:08 - 5/16 with Semiquavers 24:24 - Aligning 5/4 & 5/16 25:07 - Getting 5/16 in a 5/4 Context 25:59 - Feeling of 5/8 26:25 - Polymetric Scenario 28:15 - Using 5/4 in Different Ways 29:19 - Understanding 3/8 30:04 - Dividing 3/8 into 3/4 (Dotted Notes) 31:29 - Conclusion ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #OddTimeSignatures #TimeSignatures #MusicTheory

    Want to compose original music but don't know where to begin? Flip the usual approach and start with rhythm — using accents, beat divisions and time signatures as your seed. Triplets give arpeggios that rolling, "Indian" lilt — in this lesson you'll learn 11 piano arpeggio exercises that explore the triplet and swing feel with almost every permutation. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music walks you through Indian-style arpeggios with triplets, building from a fifth-chord study and left-hand bass into basic eighth-note arpeggios, then eighth-note triplets and swing. From there you'll work through four Indian patterns (including a hemiola), six combo patterns mixing triplets with quavers and speed variations, and finish on a Roadhouse Blues feel. It's a deep, practical dive into triplet phrasing that will give your arpeggios a fresh, grooving character. 🎼 More Indian Triplet Music I've composed ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/?filter=TIMEFEEL-%3ATriplet%3BPrimaryGenre-%3AIndian 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists ❸ What a Triplet Actually Is ➡️ https://youtu.be/l2z40W3_b7k 😻 Simple Beautiful Arpeggios ➡️ https://youtu.be/toLzes5QqTg 🎶 All our Arpeggios lessons (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT-BCpTe-KKSdiKlAFMvYNsH ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Performance 01:06 Introduction 03:13 Fifth Chord Study 04:15 Left Hand Bass 05:32 Basic Arpeggios Using Eighth Notes 07:13 What is Swing? 10:55 Eighth Note Triplets 12:54 Indian Pattern 1 14:28 Indian Pattern 2 15:29 Indian Pattern 3 17:02 Indian Pattern 4 (Hemiola) 18:36 Combo Pattern 5 19:51 Combo Pattern 6 20:57 Combo Pattern 7 21:58 Combo Pattern 8 23:40 Combo Pattern 9 24:45 Combo Pattern 10 25:42 Roadhouse Blues 11 26:17 Conclusion 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoArpeggios #Triplets #IndianMusic

    Part 3 of the rhythm series goes advanced — polyrhythms, polymeters and the dotted feel, all made approachable on the piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music wraps up his three-part rhythm series with the advanced concepts: polyrhythm, polymeter and the dotted time feel. You'll revise Parts 1 and 2, then explore the gallop, what a polyrhythm is, dividing by 4, using the LCM, playing 2 over 3, flipping into a triplet feel, polymeters and the dotted feel — with the importance of listening throughout. Shown on piano, it applies to vocals, percussion, guitar and any instrument. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Polyrhythms #Polymeter #DottedRhythm Chapters 00:00 Polyrhythms, mixed meter and dotted feels 02:06 Recap pulse, subdivision and accents 04:27 Three and four together 06:56 Common subdivision for three-against-four 09:38 Three and two together 11:17 Feel four beats with triplet subdivisions 13:06 Keep the pulse inside the polyrhythm 13:18 Combine different meter groups 14:25 Seven-plus-six rhythmic example 15:20 The Jellyfish meter-grouping example 17:40 Listen before analysing advanced rhythms 18:25 Dotted-note values and feel 20:26 Dotted-eighth-style rhythm 21:17 Compare the normal and dotted pulse 22:41 Use and resolve dotted accents 23:05 Recap advanced rhythm concepts 24:55 Practice order: pulse, meter, subdivision and phrasing

    The Tresillo and the Hemiola are two of the grooviest rhythms in modern music — and this lesson explains the difference and how to count both on the piano. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down the grooviest rhythm patterns in contemporary music, from the Latin Tresillo (heard in hits like 'Despacito' and 'Shape of You') to triplet-based feels. You'll learn the subtle but crucial difference between dividing a beat and accenting a phrase within a system of 2, 3 or 4 — covering the sixteenth-note pop clave (Tresillo), the quarter-note triplet hemiola, eighth-note triplets, dotted notes and accented phrases, with theory and notation for each. Understand these and you'll hear and play modern rhythm with far more confidence. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎹 All our lessons on Chord Inversions (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT9ygtrGwGFmfyvMyGWH52EC 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Tresillo #Hemiola #RhythmTheory Chapters 00:00 Tresillo and hemiola rhythm patterns 01:12 Hear the contrasting rhythms 02:23 Sixteenth-note tresillo: three-three-two 04:03 Divide the beat into equal triplets 05:14 Quarter-note triplets and three-against-two 06:28 Compare tresillo and hemiola 07:38 Slower eighth-note tresillo 08:38 Half-note triplets 09:54 Apply tresillo to piano with a steady left-hand pulse 11:07 Apply the triplet feel to piano 11:38 Choose a role in the ensemble 12:15 Three-note accents and triplet subdivisions 14:11 Dotted-eighth-note rhythm 15:01 Recap pulse, division and accent
