How Chords Connect: Common Tones on Piano (Thirds, Fifths & Every Chord in a Key)
How every chord in a key connects to the next through common tones: two notes in common (moving in thirds), one note in common (the diatonic circle of fifths) and no notes in common (a hexatonic, gospel sound). In G major and F major, on piano, with Jason Zac. Beginner to intermediate. We start with the seven chords of G major (one sharp, F#): G major, A minor, B minor, C major, D major, E minor, F# diminished, walked up and down in root position and in every inversion. Then the musical way to connect them: move one note, one finger, at a time. G major to E minor (its relative minor), E minor to C major, C major to A minor, and on down in thirds until you are home on G, with the inversions climbing smoothly up the piano. Sing it while you play. The same walk in F major (one flat, Bb), then going up in thirds: F, A minor, C, E diminished, G minor, Bb, D minor, F. Going down in thirds climbs the piano; going up in thirds walks down it. One note in common: the diatonic circle of fifths. G, D, A minor, E minor, B minor, F# diminished, C, G, with one tritone (F# to C) to account for, and then counterclockwise in fourths. Then the names: tonic, supertonic, mediant, subdominant, dominant, submediant, leading tone. No notes in common: G major with A minor, or with F# diminished, climbed through the inversions, gives you a six-note gospel scale. So from the tonic: E minor and B minor share two notes, C and D share one, A minor and F# diminished share none. 👉 Try it now: play G major, move one finger to get E minor, and keep going down in thirds until you are back on G. Sing each chord name as you play it. Comment THIRDS when you make it home. 🔔 Subscribe: new full lessons every Thursday and Saturday, 9:30 pm IST. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons 🎹 Piano Workout: 2 Chords, All Inversions & Modal Hexatonic Scales ➡️ https://youtu.be/qakASBgKQ9U 🎼 Voice Leading Explained: Why Every Musician Needs It ➡️ https://youtu.be/0w-8y38kKKA 🎵 How to Practice Chord Inversions Using the Circle of 5ths (Piano) ➡️ https://youtu.be/VwgRQNBq2uU 🎹 Piano Left-Hand Harmony: 9th Chords, Walking Bass & Diatonic Thirds ➡️ https://youtu.be/YCJyoW0afP4 ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://free-music-lessons.nathanielschool.com 🎛 More free music apps ➡️ https://apps.nathanielschool.com ============================= 00:00 - Common tones: how chords connect 02:37 - The seven chords of G major 03:35 - One finger at a time: down in thirds 06:45 - The same walk in F major 08:13 - Going up in thirds 11:19 - One note in common: the diatonic circle of fifths 13:25 - Naming the chords: tonic to leading tone 14:09 - Nothing in common: the hexatonic sound 15:38 - Wrap-up: two, one or no notes in common ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Lessons ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #PianoLessons #PianoTutorial #MusicTheory #ChordProgression
