How to Count & Feel the Rhythm Grid Inside a DAW (Straight, Swing, Dotted & Triplets)
Understanding the rhythm grid is the key to tight timing — here's how to count and feel every subdivision of the beat. Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music takes you through all the grid settings of a DAW (Reaper) and teaches how to count each 'time feel' — every division of the beat. You'll learn how to internalise the subdivisions and train your ear to tell whether music is played as straight, swing, dotted or triplets — covering eighth notes, triplets, the swing feel, swing vs straight, 1/16th straight, 1/16th swing and triplets, and the dotted time feel. Getting the grid right makes arranging, drum programming, quantising and editing far easier, so every track in your music serves a purpose. 🏫 Courses, Workshops or Private lessons ➡️ https://forms.gle/fsbhFKSgJbZ5xZEr8 ============================= 📹 Our Video Courses (Everything for Life Bundle) ➡️ https://learn-music.nathanielschool.com/ 🎹 Piano Courses & Private Lessons ➡️ https://piano.nathanielschool.com ============================= ▶️ Related Lessons & Playlists 🥁 All our lessons on Rhythm (Playlist) ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrNNL05e9FT85tF6cGvZK6jc5u6yZg5uU 🎵 Music Theory lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/PianoTheory 👂 Ear Training lessons ➡️ https://geni.us/EarTraining ============================= 🎓 Learn Music with Nathaniel School of Music & Jason Zac ➡️ https://nathanielschool.com 📚 All our YouTube lessons (1000+) by skill level, topic & genre ➡️ https://learning-portal.nathanielschool.com ============================= 💰 Donate on PayPal ➡️ https://geni.us/DonatePayPal 📸 Instagram ➡️ https://instagram.com/jasonzac 📞 Call +91 98454 65411 · 💬 WhatsApp chat +91 77604 56847 📧 Customised & Private Classes ➡️ music@nathanielschool.com 🎧 Listen to Jason Zac Music ➡️ https://riffs.jasonzacmusic.com/ #Rhythm #MusicTechnology #Learnpiano Chapters 00:00 Understand the musical grid in a DAW 01:58 Bars, beats and sub-beats 04:08 Quarter-note and eighth-note grids 05:57 Sixteenth-note and finer divisions 06:57 Hear and count straight eighth notes 08:37 Align the grid with the performance 09:17 Quantise notes to the grid 10:45 Count and record a triplet feel 12:45 Choose the triplet grid and preserve the performance 13:58 Swing inside the triplet feel 15:04 Use and adjust an eighth-note swing grid 16:41 Match the grid before quantising 18:20 Straight sixteenth-note subdivisions 21:56 Sixteenth-note swing 22:47 Sixteenth-note triplets 23:08 Dotted-note rhythm and grid 26:05 Recap straight, swing, triplet and dotted feels
