Find Every Chord That Fits Any Melody Note
Learn how to harmonize any melody note on piano with Jason Zac of Nathaniel School of Music using the Chord Trees concept and app. Ever wondered what chords actually fit a melody note? This lesson introduces Chord Trees — a simple way to start from one note and find every chord that can harmonize it. From there we look at how melodies land on important notes, using "Hey Jude" by the Beatles as an example. Then we open up the options: diatonic pop harmony, seventh chords, extended and borrowed chords, secondary dominants and tritone substitutions, plus fully chromatic progressions that respect voice leading, cadences, tension and resolution. We compare random harmonization, smart diatonic harmonize, and modal choices like Ionian, Aeolian, Mixolydian and Locrian — and even those outworldly cinematic chords a composer like Hans Zimmer might use. This is for pianists, guitarists, singers and producers who want to move past the same old progressions and understand how melody and chords find each other.
